Abstract

Factually, liberalism in social sciences and politics in Western Civilization has marginalized religion or separated religion from social lives and politics step by step. When liberalism became parts of religious thought of Christianity, Catholic and Protestant, it had subordinated the church under the political interest and humanism, and reduced its theological role in almost all aspects of social lives. Therefore, in liberalism of religious thought, the main problem to be argued is the concept of God (Theology) then doctrine and religious dogma. After that, liberalism argued and separated the relationship between religion and politics (Secularism). Finally, liberalism of religious thought became secularism, and influenced by the wave of postmodernism thought which enhances pluralism, equality and relativism. In its expansive movement, through globalization, modernization, and westernization, the West subsequently becomes the challenge of all nations and other civilization include Islam. Specifically, Western Civilization could be seen from three cultural sources; missionaries, orientalism, and colonialism. These three movements essentially disseminate the principle or element of Western way of life.

Abstract

Generally speaking, Muslims’ life, be it in socio-cultural, political, or economicaspects, is determined by one’s theological insight. Probably, it might not be fullyrealized, since the theological outlook is by nature latent, being integrated intoone’s inner life. However, it has a considerable contribution to constructing one’sweltanschauung. It is true that theology is the knowledge about God. Yet, humanunderstanding about God, who He is, and how human should establish his orher relationship with Him, will disclose the veracity of human behavior and conduct.Theology, being not so far different from philosophy, may play an instrumentalrole in the shaping of one’s principle of life. Up to now, one of the most influentialtheological doctrines in Islam is the one formulated by the Murji’ites. Thistheological school of thought emerged in the same period as some othercontemporaneous sects, the Kharijite, and the Mu’tazilite..Today, these theologicalschools have in effect disappeared, and thus they are not recognized any longer.Nevertheless, some elements of Murji’ite doctrines remain influential, beingintegrated into the currently surviving Islamic theological school, the Sunnite.Characteristically, the Murji’ite tends to be permissive, less decisive, and is allowingthe moral problems that occur in human life to be solved by God alone, not byhuman. It is believed that only God can judge.

Abstract

The question of cosmic beginning has always attracted considerable attention from serious thinkers past and present. Among many contesting theories that have emerged, that of emanation was appropriated by Muslim philosophers like Ibn Sînâ in order to reconcile the Aristotelian doctrine of the eternity of matter with the teaching of al-Qur’ân on the One Creator-God. According to this theory, the universe, which comprises a multitude of  entities, is generated from a transcendent Being, the One, that is unitary, through the medium of  a hierarchy of  immaterial substances. While the ultimate source is undiminished, the beings which are emanated are progressively less perfect as they are further removed from the first principle. The process is conceived as being atemporal and often compared to the efflux of light from a luminous body, or to water flowing from a spring. This metaphysical theory has enabled Ibn Sînâ to solve the vexed problem: given an eternally existing world and one eternally existing God, how can the two necessarily co-exist without having the perfect, simple unity of God destroyed by contact with the multiplicity of material things? The following essay delineates and evaluates both Ibn Sînâ’s arguments as well as the counter-arguments of  his critics.

Abstract

The following article tries to research the concept of equality in women’s testimony, either in revelation perspective or gender one. For feminists, women’s testimony in Islam which is considered half of the man’s testimony has been led to discrimination against women in the public sector. In Islam, implementing testimony is farḍu kifâyah, including the testimony implemented by women. A woman’s testimony is accepted in all cases that may not be done by men absolutely. Related to this, there are fundamental differences on the issue of women’s testimony between viewpoints based on gender and viewpoints based on Islamic thought. Gender issues in the perspective of Islamic thought are basically always in harmony with nature and the human mind at all times and places. Thus, it is surprising if a Muslim believes that in Islamic law there are aspects of injustice and discrimination against women, he tries to deconstruct interpretation of the Qur’an and the hadits as the feminists do. The principle of fairness and equality in Islam is not just restricted to the meaning of the empirical and material. But it also contains elements of spiritual, welfare, a guarantee of rights and obligations, the aspect of helping each other, supporting each other, and being responsible. Islam does not interpret men and women as a separate entity, apart, and competing. The difference in the rights, obligations and rukhṣah in the law, can not be interpreted as preferential treatment or discrimination.

Abstract

This paper examined the epistemological empiricism conception of Ibn Taimiyyah and John Locke based on the comparative analysis to obtain the complete description of epistemological empiricism thought of both, as well as its implications and consequences for the development of science and religious thought. To obtain the detailed answer about the two figures thought, it would be revealed the similarities and differences of epistemological empiricism of each by showing the elements that became the focus of both studies. Furthermore, from those, it will be sought the strange and weaknesses, and possible relevance of the two thought to find a new alternative as a reflective systematic model for the development of science and religious thought in the present and future. Comparing the empirical thought of both figures above is important to do, due to the empirical tradition in the two mens’ world have a very extreme differences. In the west, Empiricism had contributed significantly to the epistemological assets or legacy and had led to the development of science and technology. In contrast, empiricism in the east, was suspected as a harmful tradition to the Islamic ideology. It was considered as the seed that gave birth to atheism. Based on the two thinkers empiricism, will appear the strategic idea that can be synthesized to developed modern science as well as Islamic thought. Bot of epistemology thought can be combine to reconstruct the Islamic epistemology which is more open and more mature, because in that context will emerge the theories of knowledge without eliminating the metaphysical and ethical authority. In the context of combination, the natural tendency of foundation of Islamic teaching should be the bases of policy as descript by Ibnu Taimiyyah, that human nature becomes the foundation of the human responsibility in the end after and imposition of responsibility or duty, are the necessities to obey Allah order and to leave the Allah prohibition. The natural tendency is a gift from Allah that guides the human being to the right path.

Abstract

It is widely known that the national reform emerged on virtually two decades ago has mandated the Indonesian government to demolish the corrupt practices from their origins. In fact, the existence of corruption is generally realized no longer maximally declined in today’s socio-economic life or even involves wider scopes. As a result, people tend to be more pessimistic towards attempts to curb this extraordinary crime. Even though many reasons have been offered by several scholars due to deal with this dilemma, the problems were steadily occur. Therefore, this article requiring further improvement tries to identify the fundamental issue which is rarely discussed; defnition of corruption. Through qualitative research using inductive method, a number of results have been found. Firstly, the recent defnition of corruption developed by mostly western scientists is quite inappropriate and leads to confusion instead of what have been discussed by Moslem scholars since classical era. Secondly, in Islamic point of view, recent corruption includes ghulûl, risywah, ghisy, and iḥtikâr which are addressed as economic crimes deserving certain consequences. And fnally, Islamic teaching provides the plenty of anti-corruption instruments ranging from organizing good governance in order to prevent every Moslem from committing corruption to imposing particular punishment upon the criminal.

Abstract

This article demonstrates that a variety of local languages, like Javanese, Sundanese and Malay, have become a medium for writing Al-Qur’an commentaries in the archipelago. The choice of local languages for these texts is closely connected to the social-cultural circumstances where they were produced. For example commentaries in Malay Jawi appear in Aceh and Sumatra while commentaries in Javanese are found in the palaces and pesantren of Java. Moreover, the process of adoption and adaptation of Islam to local culture also characterized the dynamics of commentary writing in the region. Some commentators wrote in the Malay or Javanese language with an Arabic script and yet, while the influence of local cultures was so strong, other commentators used both the Arabic language.

As for the non-economic mechanism is non-productive activities, for example by way of giving zakat, alms, grants, and others. Both of these mechanisms are outlined in the concept of ownership, ownership management and distribution of wealth in society. And historically, Islamic economics has been applied for more than a thousand years.
