Abstract

The renaissance of Islam in various countries has become new phenomenon in the global economy. At the same time it also become the challenge for the Western capitalism and Eastern socialism. In order to get concrete and clear idea on Islamic economy, here the writer presents five books written by Muslim scholars, classic as well as contemporary. The first is Kitab al-Amwal written by Abu Ubaid bin Salam, according to Khalil Harras this book is considered as the best and the most comprehensive book of Islamic economy. The second is Kitab Al-Ahkam al-Sultaniyyah written by Imam Mawardi. The third is Al-Fikr al-Mali written by Ibnu Khaldun, which has high scientific authority from other books, it is systematic as well as contextual. The fourth is al-Iradat al-‘Ammah li al-Daulah al-Islamiyyah fi Sadr al-Islam wa Tatbiqatuha al-Mu’asirah written by Monzer Kahf. The fifth is Al-Nafaqat al-‘Ammah fi Al-Islam: Dirasah Muqaranah written by Yusuf Ibrahim Yusuf. The first three authors are classics and the rest are contemporary.

Abstract

The main purpose of this article consists in investigating the history of theology in the Western culture. This investigation is aimed at finding a new path for understanding the essence of  Western theology. Western theology is meant that body of  doctrine and tradition developed solely in terms of  the temporal and cultural situations within the West. It should go without saying that all doctrinal development takes place within a historical and ideological context which defines not only the issues raised but also the language and concepts used in attempting solutions. It should readily be admitted that even the “purest” theological formulation reflects the thought and terms of  its era. It is not doubted that Western theology promotes universal truths which may be applied to all peoples in all places under all circumstances. The resistance comes arise from Liberation theologies. The characteristic of  Liberation theologies, whether specifically Black American theologies or Latin American theologies, is to decry the negative impact which traditional Western theology has had, both implicitly and explicitly, upon non-white peoples of  the world. For the case of  Indonesia, the mergence of  Islamic thought or Islamic theology is very unique. Intellectual traditions of Indonesia were developed after contact with reformist and modernist thought without denying local wisdom. Acceptance and rejection of  Western Thought without criticism is a weakness.

Abstract

In the era when the idea of similarity, equality and pluralism are disseminated in diversified area, one might face difficulty to distinguish one civilization from the other. Now capitalism is the most dominant system of economic in the world and even developed into a civilization that has a worldveiw. Capitalism also used to be claimed and accepted as universal system that could be applied to the whole world. In response to this state of mind, it is imperative that capitalism be studied and identified from its very basic concept, i.e worldview perspective, and then compared it with Islam. This paper is a preliminary attempt to identify capitalist worldview and prove that it differs fundamentally from the worldview of Islam. The capitalist vision on religion, world, life style, justice, freedom of thought, wealth, economic activities which are influenced by Western worldview is diametrically different from Islamic worldview. Based on this study it must be very clear that Muslim intellectual who intend to borrow certain concept of capitalism for the development of Islamic economic should realize there are fundamental principles of capitalism that are irreconciliable with that of Islamic economic.

Abstract

It is known that the communism had affected the history of this world. This ideology had succeeded influencing a third of the world in less than one century after Karl Marx’s death and it had caused some revolutionary movements at some countries of the world. It is interesting to say that even what Marx had predicted about the history of human being in the future was not surely proven, but his ideas have been affecting people. But, the communism has serious problems related to the theological matter for sure. It could make people becoming atheist. Moreover, it could create the people hate their religion, but they could become religion’s antagonists. Marx’s hatred toward religions was expressed by the words: “Religion is the opium of the masses”. Then Lenin, another figure of the communism, did a discrimination to religious people, as well as, Joseph Stalin and Mao Zedong who prohibited all kinds of religious activities during their lifetime. Long time ago, thousands of Indonesian Moslems were becoming victims of a communist party in Indonesia (PKI). Nowadays, the communism doctrine begins to appear and affect some youths of Indonesia. Perhaps, it does because they have been frustrated and being disappointed by the socio-political condition which is controlled by modern capitalists. But, they have to be aware that the communism is not a solution. In fact, it is surely dangerous. It could ruin religions’ concepts. Hence, this article would try to explain some theological problems of the communism ideology.

Abstract

This article discusses the ideology of Sayyid Qutb and how this ideology has influenced his approach to the Qur’an. Although, in the beginning of his life he saw the Qur’an as the literary text and hence the literary approach to the Qur’an is the preferred approach, in his later life – when he became Islamist – he revised this approach and treat the Qur’an as a political document. Because of this political interpretation of the Qur’an, his tafsir Fi Zilal al-Qur’an has influenced many radical groups in Egypt and other countries. The primary sources of this article are Sayyid Qutb’s works, especially al-Taswir al-Fanni fi alQur’an, Masyahid al-Qiyamah fi al-Qur’an, and Fi Zilal al-Qur’an. These works are read chronologically and historically to see the development of Qutb’s thought and the shifting of his ideology. Thus, the knowledge of the social-historical and political context of Egypt is important to determine its influence to Qutb and vice versa. Finally, this article concludes that Qutb’s literary approach to the Qur’an has been transformed into ideological and political approach. This shifting is due to the changing of Sayyid’s Qutb worldview, from a secular Muslim to be an ideological one. Furthermore, at the end of his life, he became a theoretical ideological Islamist.

Abstract

This article explores Said Nursi’s concept of theodicy on natural disasters and human misery. The problem of natural disasters and human misery is one of the important themes in the Islamic debate where trust in the Almighty and Most Merciful God occupies a central position in the faith system. The theme is related to the concept of ‘God’s justice’. When Nursi raised the topic, it was known that Bediuzzaman Said Nursi was influenced by two great medieval Islamic thinkers, namely al-Ghazali and al-Rumi. These two thinkers had a major influence on Said Nursi’s thinking on the theodicy problem. Nursi explores natural disasters, misery and human suffering as a matter of theodicy. Nursi argued, it was through suffering that humanity underwent trials and tribulations. Natural disasters and misery that befall on humans are seen by Nursi as a test and trial for human beings. This article finds that Nursi was of the view that these trials and tests have a purpose as a means for developing the spiritual potential and to find a way toward God. Nursi’s point of view of the theodic problem of natural disasters and human misery has a close relationship with that of al-Ghazali and al-Rumi. If al-Ghazali emphasized the aspect of God’s omnipotence, al-Rumi built his teachings on the basis of love. But in Nursi’s hands these two thinkings can be properly combined.

Abstract

This article contributes to the analysis of the “madani society” discourse and its development in Indonesia as a form of a struggle and dialectic of intellectual Muslim to interpret Islamic teachings in its relationship to modern life, especially to politics and nationality problems. The Islamic basic concept about the democratic principles such as justice, equality, freedom and deliberation, including the attitudes of tolerance and recognition of human rights actually had been developed well over the Apostles and the Khilafat ‘al-Rashidin political and social life. This Islamic political concept is tried to be reconstructed back by Muslim intellectuals with the idea of madani community. The presence of this discourse in Indonesia seems externally to be affected by the discourse of civil society that had been becoming a global currents of thought since the 1990s, and internally cannot be separated from the condition of the nation at that time, especially the unavailability of public space, besides as the impact of the model static approach developed in the New Order political reality.

Abstract

This article concentrates on Islamic law product relating to charitable religious endowment (waqf) in Indonesia. Based on the traditional perspective of fiqh originated from the earlier Islamic jurists of orthodox view and in turn it had long been legislised as part of Indonesia positive law system, the law of waqfhad regulated that the wealth to be waqf shall be limited to only unmoving properties.  This regulation had led the management of waqf to be unproductive to raise the social welfare.By the virtue of the relatively wider viwpoint of the contemporar y Islamic law thinkers, the Islamic law refor m takes place in Indonesia particularly at the level of postive law ,namely Law Number 41/2004 Relating to Waqf. This law stipulates the thing to be waqf could be either unmoving or moving properties, like cash, gold, certificate of obligation, inteletual wealth, and so forth. This law also lays down the regulation relating to the penalty against those who deviate in managing a waqf. However, as a critque and recommendation the writer propose that the society could be involved in preser ving the purpose of a waqf which is the right of Allah. And it could be conducted by stipulating the class action as a way of the settlements of dispute occuring to a waqf property.
