Abstract

This research represents the descriptive research to describe students’ ability of eleventh grade students at SMAN 14 Pekanbaru in writing hortatory exposition text. The total number of eleventh grade students at SMAN 14 Pekanbaru in academic year 2015/2016 was 210 students that consisted of 7 classes. In this research, the researcher used ‘cluster random sampling technique” to choose the sample, and the total sample of this research amount to 30 students. The data was collected through writing test, where the students were asked to write a hortatory exposition text based on the topics that were provided by researcher of this research. The test was done around 90 minutes for every time of the test. The students’ entire test was scored by two persons as scorers of this research. Those two scores gave scores to the students’ test based on the criteria in the instrumentation of this research. The result showed that the student’ ability in writing hortatory exposition text was categorized “average to good”. It can be proven by the average of students’ writing test score that was 61.65 that cannot achieve the passing grade yet.   Key words: Writing Ability, Hortatory Exposition Text

Abstract

This study aims to provide a more interesting video-shaped learning media to teach listening courses at FKIP University of Lancang Kuning to improve students' ability in understanding the information. This research was conducted in FKIP Unilak in the odd semester of the 2016/2017 academic year. The research method used classroom action research to find out how far the learning media  can improve students’ ability and the factors that influence student listening ability. Then, technique of collecting data used interview, observation, and test.  Based on the result of test instrument that there was improvement in students’ listening skill after applying video as learning media. It showed from the test result that first stage was obtained the lowest score, that was 58, the highest 76, the average 76. While students’ score in the second stage is the lowest 76 and the highest 80, while the average value of 86. This indicated that the student listening ability increases after applying  video as learning media. Furthermore, the interview and observation result  deal with the second research question that factors affecting listening ability are influenced by the media.  The second factor is the strategy and learning materials used by the lecturers in delivering teaching materials in listening learning also greatly affected the students’ ability.

Abstract

This research is designed to develop the students’ reading comprehension of narrative, descriptive and hortatory exposition texts by using cooperative learning based-module. It aims to explainthe current needs, to design and toexamine the validity and practicality of cooperative learning based-module in developing reading comprehension at the second-semester Students in English Department of FKIP – UIR. The design of this research is R & D approach by using ADDIE model. The sample was selected from second semester students at English Department of FKIP UIR. Five validators involved in evaluating the product to evaluate its the validity, and the practicality. The quantitative data were collected through a questionnaire and test and qualitative data were collected through an interview. To develop the learning material to be givento students, the researcher tried to find out the need analysis, the validity, and the practicality of her product in designing and implementing readingin cooperative learning based-module. Based on the research finding of this research was considered valid and practice and it can be used to develop the quality of students in reading comprehension.

Abstract

The aim of this study are to describe the EFL learners’ reading habit, the factors influence of reading habit, and the impact of the use Online Reading Resources  on promoting students’ reading habit. 156 EFL learners FKIP- Islamic University of Riau involved as participants who read by using online reading resources. The study employed questionnaire, reading log, and interview intensively to collect the data.  The results of analysis data from instruments were used in this study reflected that the use of online reading resources as a source of reading material has changed the reading habits of the learners, from conventional reading cultures into integrated the new technologies in reading process. There were 75% students already have got reading habit. It was significant increase than before. Besides that, online reading resources also provided positive changes for students who have low motivation in reading to be a fun reading activity. Supporting of teacher, parents, and environment help the learners establish their reading habit. The significant reason of learners get the reading habit was to complete the task. The result implies that the learners expected to read more and intensively to get the greatly reading habit. In conclusion, online reading resources are helpful to work the task, to get much information, and to improve learners’ knowledge in reading.

Abstract

Good ability in listening means having competence to comprehend information during listening activities. However, Listening skill is still considered as one of the most difficult skills for English language learners although they have been learning English for few years. Hence, this study was designed to gather information about the students’ challenges in listening activities, their perspectives on listening subject, and positive factors on the students’ success in listening. Then, a set of listening test and questionnaire were distributed. Both quantitative and qualitative data were studied to identify the underlying matters in students’ listening skills, addressing challenges, main listening hindrance factors and learning experiences. The findings of this study revealed that the students faced problems in listening because they still could not complete the basic listening skills in the test. Furthermore, Most of them considered that the listening classes are challenging for them due to some problems and difficulties during the teaching and learning activities. Besides that, there were 5 factors influenced the students’ listening skill; lack of practice, limited vocabulary mastery, native speakers’ accent, pronunciation, and uninteresting learning materials. Moreover, their knowledge about English structure and good facilities in listening classes supported them to be able to figure out some challenges in listening activities. In addition, the students realized the important of the listening activities, but assistances from the teachers and some other students were still needed during the teaching and learning activities. In conclusion, having good listening skill still appeared as a challenge for the first year students at English Department of Academic Year 2015/2016.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out the difficulties  of reading comprehension  faced by the first semester of students in FKIP UIR Pekanbaru. Kualitative research design in case study used in this research by using the instruments were  questionnaire and  interview guide. Based on the results of analyzing  data from the questionnaire and interview, the reseacher   found  most of students’ difficulties in reading comprehension because they have no motivation in reading habit, they  read a little or nothing. It is considered to be a problem for the students to comprehend a reading text. Another students’  difficulties in reading comprehension was the low reading skill. The students complained about the fact that they found, they need to study hard to remember the information they just read. They also need much time to read the text to overcome their problem. Too difficult reading material is also one of students problem in understanding the reading text. The material of reading is unfamiliar for them and grammatical complexity is also a reason why the students failed to comprehend the text correctly. The sentences in reading text too long or having complicated sentences. Related with these problem, new words  and long texts are seen by the students as a major  obstacle to comprehend a reading text.

Abstract

Teaching speaking is an important part in the language teaching, as well as the assessing speaking. Therefore, teachers need to use some strategies in conducting the assessing speaking. Based on that issue, this research was aimed at exploring teachers’ strategies in assessing speaking skill. To explore the problems, case study with a qualitative approach was adopted. This research employed observation, questionnaire and interview in collecting the data and involved five teachers from MTsNAndalanPekanbaru. The collected data were analyzed by using flow data analysis process of Miles &Huberman (1994). The findings revealed that teachers apply the strategy of conducting the speaking assessment in the classroom which are started from the way they identify current status of classroom speaking assessment, the purpose of their speaking assessment, types speaking assessment, then selecting the teachers’ strategies of speaking assessment and last, teachers’ perceptions of the effectiveness of classroom speaking assessment. In general, teachers implementing some strategies in conducting the speaking assessment. There were discussion and conversation, question and answer, role play, repetition, etc. This research was expected to broaden teachers’ knowledge about strategies in assessing speaking in terms of the purpose and the type of assessment used, then teachers’ perceptions of speaking assessment.

Abstract

Being able to read in English is very important. Success in reading is the most necessary because it is a basic tool of education. Based on the syllabus of Islamic Senior high School Hidayatul Mubtadiin (MAHM), it is hoped that students should comprehend monolog texts in narrative, spoof and hortatory exposition forms well. After doing preliminary observation at MAHM, some of the students of the second year still had low ability in their reading comprehension. The dominant factors influencing their low reading comprehension are the lack of vocabulary and teaching strategy of reading comprehension. From the two of dominant factors, the researcher is interested to investigate about teaching reading comprehension. Thus, the researcher conducted a research on the effect of Multipass strategy on Reading comprehension. This research investigates students’ reading comprehension taught by using multipass strategy at MAHM Siak Sri Inderapura. The design of this study was Quasi-experimental research by post-test only. The subject of this research was the second year students of MAHM. The total population was 42 students, and the sample was 42 students. Data were collected by using a test. Then, the data were analyzed by using t-test formula. It was found that there was a significant effect of using multi pass strategy on students’ reading comprehension at MAHM.

Abstract

The students at the Second Semester of English Study Program of FKIP-UIR  Pekanbaru have problem in reading comprehension. The aim of this research is to find out whether Online Reading Resources has significant effect towards students’ reading comprehension in extensive reading class. The design of the research was experimental research which focused on quantitative approach. The participants of the research were the second semester students of English Study Program of FKIP-UIR Pekanbaru. There are two classes as the samples of this research; experimental group and control group. Each of the group consisted of 31 students. The instruments of this research was reading test. Experimental group was provided with pre-test, treatment, and post-test. Meanwhile control group only given pre-test, and post-test. The finding showed that the mean score in pre- test was 57.25 and post test was 78.07, the improvement was 20.8 for experimental group. Meanwhile for control group in pre-test, the students got the mean score 58.07, and in post-test got 64.67, improvement was 6.61. It could be stated that there is significant effect of online reading resources after getting treatment. In calculation of analysis tt (t table) on the level of significant 5% found 0.361, and to was 7.1. It could be seen a comparison was 7.1>0.361or (to>tt). It means that the null hypothesis is rejected and alternative hypothesis is accepted. It can be stated there is a significant effect of students’ reading comprehension in extensive reading class after using online reading resource in teaching and learning reading at the second semester of English Study program FKIP-UIR Pekanbaru.

Abstract

Reading occupies large portion in teaching-learning activities, especially for English department students. It is reasonable since all their learning materials are in English. However, their ability in reading comprehension is low. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct a research to solve this problem. The purpose of this research was to find out whether Reciprocal Teaching strategy can solve and improve the students’ reading comprehension. Moreover, this research was also to find out what factors influence the improvement of the students’ reading comprehension. This research is action research. The participants of the research were the third semester students of 2018-2019 academic year which consisted of 13 students. The instruments used to collect the data were from observation checklists, field notes, interviews, and reading tests. After analyzing the data, it was found that reciprocal teaching strategy was able to improve the students’ reading comprehension ability. It could be seen from the improvement of their mean score in reading comprehension at the end of the cycle 1. The factors that influenced the improvement of their reading ability involved materials, teacher’s knowledge, students’ interaction, and assessment activities. To sum up, the implementation of reciprocal teaching strategy was able to provide positive results on their reading comprehension.
