Abstract

Increasing students’ vocabulary mastery is not an easy way for English teacher in teaching English in the classroom. To realize the difficulties of increasing students’ vocabulary mastery, the English teacher should consider many strategies of teaching. The strategies that are used should be able to make students feel comfortable and enjoy in the classroom and also should be able to encourage and motivate them to learn. One of the strategies is STAD (Student Teams Achievement Divisions). This research focuses on the implementation of STAD to increase students’ vocabulary mastery. The writer would like to find out whether there is a suitable techniqueor not on students’ vocabulary mastery for junior high school students after applying STAD in teaching and learning process.This research is an experimental study in quantitative research. The research involved two equal qualification of sample groups, they are an experimental group and control group. The instrument that used in this research is vocabulary test.Pre-test were given for both groups, after applying STAD in treatment for experimental group, the pos-test was administered by the two groups, experimental group and control group. The writer found that the mean score of experimental group is 52.59 in pre-test and became 71.66 in post-test and control group is 51.52 in pre-test and became 55.81 in post-test. From the result of mean score from each groups, it can be seen that there is significant improvement from experimental group.Consequently, the useof STAD is more effective to increase vocabulary mastery for junior high school students. And the evidence indicates that teaching English vocabulary by using STAD has significant positive effectand become a suitable technique for increasing students’ vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

This study was intended to describe  the category of inflectional and derivational morphemes found in  Reading Texts of 2013 Curriculum English Textbook for the X Grade of Senior High Schools Published by Ministry of Education and Culture. Morpheme is used to refer to the smallest unit that has meaning or serves a grammatical function in a language. The morphemes which can meaningfully stand alone are called free morphemes while the morphemes such as –er and –s, which cannot meaningfully stand alone are called bound morphemes. The design of this study was descriptive qualitative. The results of this study show that Derivational prefixes consist of  inter-, eco-, un-, ar-, pre-, re-, pro-, be-, de-, in-, dis-, a-, ex-, auto-, mis-, agri-, em-, ap-, im- and al-. While,  Derivational suffixes consist of four categories. Thus are nominal, verbal, adjectival, and adverbial suffixes.  First, nominal suffixes, namely  –ism, -ation, -al, -ing, -ist, -or, -ity, -er, -ance, -ment, -ion, -ess, -ium, -ature, -ry, -ant, -ce, -ive, -cy, -y, -r, -ge, and -ness. Second, Verbal suffixes, namely –n and –ize. Third, Adjectival suffixes,  namely  –al, -ly, -ous, -ing, -able, -ic, -ish, -ive, -ian, -ny, -less, -ed, -ary, -nese, -y, and –ful and the last is adverbial suffix  –ly. Otherwise, the categories of inflectional morphemes that found in texts consist of  Noun suffixes (plural) such as;  –s, -ies, and –es, Noun suffixes (possessive) e.g;  –s’ and -’s, Verb suffixes (3rd person singular) are –s and –es, Verb suffixes (past tense) are –ed and –d, Verb suffixes (past participle) such as; –n, -d, and -ed, Adjective suffixes (comparative) are  –er, - r, and –ier and  Adjective suffixes (superlative) are –st and –est. Therefore, based on the result of finding verb suffixes are not found.

Abstract

This research aimed to explain the extent to which cognitive strategy can improve the students’ reading comprehension and what factors that influence the changes of the students’ reading ability by implementing cognitive strategy. This research was a classroom action research which consists of two cycles and four meetings of each cycle. Three meetings for teaching reading comprehension of descriptive text by using cognitive strategy and another meeting for reading comprehension of descriptive text test. The research was conducted from April, 30 2013 up to May, 30 2013. The instrument used to collect the data were reading comprehension of descriptive text test, observation sheets, field notes, and interview which were helped by a collaborator. The finding revealed that the implementation of cognitive strategy could better improve students’ reading comprehension of descriptive text at grade VII-2 of SMPN 1 Indra Praja Tembilahan. The improvement was confirmed by the increasing average students’ score, the average score of students in cycle I was 70,72 and in cycle II was 78,10. The factors that influence the students’ reading comprehension during the application of cognitive strategy were the materials, the students’ reading  motivation, and the teacher’s role to students. Finally, the classroom action research by using cognitive strategy could improve the students’ reading comprehension of descriptive text at grade VII-2 SMPN 1 Indra Praja Tembilahan.

Abstract

The aims of this study is to explore the practicum implementation in order to see barrier occurs and to suggest off possible solution to issues occur into the below specific objectives: (a) to explore form of PPL implementation from several points of view: school partners, supervisor-lecturer, and teacher-student, (b) to overview the actual work of the students in the school, viewing from workload and timing, (c) to describe supervision from school partner teacher, types of supervision and partnership pattern in the classroom. The approaches employed samples from four schools, a university and related research participants all of whom are probed for detail individual and group interview. There is also a look for document review applied for better comprehension of the practice. The selected schools are; two SMPs and two SMAs, all of which lie in Pekanbaru. Then, the university reviewed at was Universitas Islam Riau. The research sees that the currect practice is running well, however, there are few wrong doing happening on the ground that school management and PPL unit need to review about, such as workload of the students, supervision, and illegal request from schools that related to financial or non-financial. The timing of the practicum variation need some unified approached and the university need to delegate supervisor-lecturer for initial talk with schools regarding the timing, at about 2 months period. On the other hand, the preparation of the students is in need of revision in term of their self awarenes for experience-based learning. And post practicum reflection process is strongly suggested for better practice and indivdual strengthening learning process.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to know the teaching and learning activity in implementing the 2013 curriculum. This research is based on a preliminary study of the implementation of the 2013 curriculum in some junior high schools around Pekanbaru by observing and interviewing English teachers. This research is qualitative. Researcher use observation sheet and interview to know the learning activities in SMP Negeri 23 Pekanbaru. Based on the research findings, first, the stage of teaching and learning process in the classroom, the teacher has not been able to carry out the ideal teaching step; second, professionally, the curriculum implementer has not received training from the government to support the teaching and learning process in the classroom and the last available resources and media Not yet supported. By doing this research, researchers hope that the government does the right training for all English teachers in applying the 2013 curriculum.

Abstract

As one of essential skills to master a language, listening subject is provided as one of compulsory subjects to the learners in English study program at university level in order to help them in improving their English skill in term of having good ability in comprehending spoken information delivered by native or non-native speakers of English in various contexts of communication.Despite of having long term English learning experiences and easy access of learning sources, the learners seem still having hindrances in listening comprehension skill. Based on researcher’s experiences in teaching interpretative listening subject to the first year students of English study program, most of the students did not actively involve during the teaching and learning activities, they also had low performances on listening.In relation to the phenomena, this study was conducted with a descriptive research design in order to answer a question about the first year students’ listening comprehension hindrances. The participants were 30 students undertaking interpretative listening subject on 2016/2017 academic year at English Study Program, Universitas Islam Riau. Distributing questionnaire and interviewing the learners were done in collecting the data. Then, the findings show that there are five factors encountered by the learners as their hindrances in listening activities; inadequate listening practices, speed-rate of speakers, pronunciation, unknown vocabulary, and grammatical understanding

Abstract

The lecturers are in search of exploring innovative assessment techniques in order to promote students skill. For assessing students’ language skills, the study introduces Edmodo. Being a web-based online technology, beside can provide all subject, Edmodo also allows students and teacher to post materials, share videos and links, grades, notices, and assignment. It enables teachers to work with their learners in real time, and can be used either in the class or at home. The special code assigned for a particular group which makes it secure and safe in use. The study focuses on how the use of edmodo as an assessment tool. 68 students from two classes that attending News and Report Writing Course in English Language Education Islamic University of Riau in Pekanbaru participated in various assessment activities through Edmodo during 2016/2017 academic year. Reflection of the students regarding the use of Edmodo as an assessment tool were obtained by semi-structured interviews. There were four questions which posed to the students conducted by the researcher. The result indicated that most of the students motivated and Edmodo also reduced their test anxiety to a great extent and they would prefer to be assessed through Edmodo rather than traditional asessment techniques like pen-and-paper test.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the English language problems and learning strategies. The study employed a survey design which involved administering questionnaires of rating scales, using Rubin, J., & Thompson, I. (1994) and Rebecca Oxford (1990) Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL), to measure English language problems and language learning strategies from 10 Thai students  of English Study Program of Teacher Training and Education Faculty at Riau Islamic University. The result of this study revealed that the most serious problem of Thai students in English Language Learning is listening and writing skills while reading skill is the least problem. Another big problem involved being unable to write an essay within limited time and always have a listening problem. Beside, the problem least mentioned is unable to understand classroom lectures in English. All Participant reported a high frequency use of strategy on the SILL. The participants reported using social strategies most frequently and metacognitive strategies least frequently but in medium range. The most frequently used strategies involved asking lecture or classmate for helping. Not trying guess if they do not fully understand what is being said was the least frequently used.

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate students’ perception of using Whatsapp in blended learning on reading comprehension. This was a descriptive research. The participants of this study consisted of 40 students of the second semester at STMIK-AMIK Riau, Pekanbaru, Indonesia. The data collected through questionnaire and interview. The finding of this research showed that majority of the participants had positive perception towards the using Whatsapp in blended learning on reading comprehension. All of the means of students responses in the questionnaire in each items were at 3.5-4.5 which indicated students’ responses were positive or at high level. The result from questionnaire also revealed that students agreed that using whatsapp in blended learning on reading comprehension was useful, helpful and effective in learning English anytime and anywhere. The findings from interview results also revealed that there were positive aspects and drawbacks of using Whatsapp in blended learning on reading comprehension. Nevertheless, the positive aspects of using Whatsapp in blended learning on reading comprehension gave more benefits to the students’ learning activities and their performances. These benefits could be continued to students’ learning outcome especially on their reading comprehension ability.

Abstract

This research is based on the needs to analyze and evaluate students’ ability in applying unity and coherence aspect in a scientific essay. This is because unity and coherence aspect become important thing in a paragraph, essay, or other kinds of composition. This research aims at analyzing students’ ability in applying unity and coherence aspect in a scientific essay. 52 students at semester 5in 2016/2017 academic year of English Education Department Faculty of Teachers Training and Education University of Lancang Kuning were the participants in this study. Test and interview were used to collect the data. The data from the test was analyzed by using scoring rubric and the data from the interview was explained descriptively. The result showed that the students’ ability in applying unity and coherence was categorized into good level. The students’ average score was 74.9. Furthermore, from the interview, it can be stated that students were able to write an essay well with good unity and coherence. It was basically influenced by good understanding about unity and coherence. Then, the students did writing practice at leisure time more and more. In conclusion, it can be stated that the students’ ability in applying unity and coherence in writing a scientific essay is in good level with average score 74.9.
