Abstract

The objective of this research is to know the students’ errors in pronouncing of English words on vowel and consonant sounds in the first semester of English students of FKIP UIR. The research design of this study is descriptive research. The researcher assessed the students’ errors pronunciation at English Language Education of FKIP UIR. The Respondent of this research was the first semester of English students of FKIP UIR. In this study, the research instrument is an oral test, there are 40 words that be tested, and the data was collected by a recorder. In analyzing the data, the researcher helped by other English lecturers as raters. Then, the data was checked by using talking-talking software and phonetic transcription. The result of this study described that there are some errors made by students in pronouncing English words. There are 25 students’ errors pronounced short vowel /e/, 15 students’ errors pronouncing short vowel /ᴜ/, 21 Students’ errors pronouncing the consonant / ð/, 18 students’ errors pronouncing consonant /ɵ/, and 17 students’ errors pronouncing consonant /ʒ/.

Abstract

Memiliki kemampuan bahasa Inggris yang baik dan dibuktikan dengan kepemilikan sertifikat IELTS menjadi suatu kebutuhan saat ini, terutama bagi para mahasiswa yang ingin melanjutkan studi ataupun mengembangkan karir mereka pada level internasional. Dalam hal ini, para mahasiswa perlu untuk meningkatkan kemampuan bahasa Inggris dan mengenal IELTS, serta memiliki pengalaman dalam menyelesaikan tes IELTS ataupun tes simulasi IELTS. Terkait dengan adanya beberapa keterampilan yang diuji pada IELTS, penelitian ini berfokus pada tes keterampilan menyimak (listening) dengan tujuan untuk menganalisis tingkat kemampuan mahasiswa dalam menyimak karena menyimak merupakan langkah pertama pada kegiatan komunikasi. Selain itu, penelitian ini juga bertujuan untuk menemukan faktor-faktor yang memengaruhi keberhasilan dan kesulitan pada tes yang diberikan. Penelitian ini dirancang menggunakan metode penelitian deskriptif dengan pendekatan kuantitatif dan kualitatif melalui teknik sampel purposif yang melibatkan 35 orang mahasiswa untuk melakukan tes simulasi IELTS (menyimak). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa peserta tes telah mampu memahami informasi yang mereka dengar selama tes dilaksanakan, tetapi masih berada pada konteks komunikasi sederhana yang telah diketahui dengan baik oleh peserta tes. Hal ini ditunjukkan dengan perolehan rentang nilai 4—6 oleh sebahagian besar peserta tes, sehingga tingkat keterampilan mahasiswa dalam melakukan tes perlu ditingkatkan. Faktor yang memengaruhi keberhasilan siswa dalam melakukan tes adalah faktor persiapan dan latihan, tetapi sebahagian besar mahasiswa tidak melakukan persipan khusus ketika akan melakukan tes simulasi yang diberikan, sehingga hasil yang diperoleh perlu ditingkatkan.Having good English skill which is proven by the ownership of IELTS certificate becomes a need nowadays, particularly for students who want to pursue their study in higher level or step out in international level career. In this case, the students need to keep improving their English, study about IELTS, have experience in completing IELTS test. Since there are some skills assessed in IELTS, this article focused on discussing the students’ performances in Listening IELTS test with two objectives; to analyse the students’ performances in IELTS listening tests, and to find out some factors infleuneced the students’ success and difficulty in comepeleting the test. Hence, this research is descriptive research by working on quantitative and qualitative data and involving 35 students to join the tests. The findings of the research reveal that most of the students had already showed their good perofmances in compeleting the listening tests since they could reach 4-6 range of scores. However, the students need to keep improving their performances in the future listening test. Furthermore, having preparation before conducting EILTS test become one of the most essential components to be success in the test, but most of the students did not seriously prepare themselves when taking the test.

Abstract

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) merupakan salah satu tes kemahiran berbahasa Inggris yang megukur 4 keterampilan berbahasa Inggris seseorang. Terkait dengan adanya beberapa keterampilan berbahasa Inggris yang diukur di IELTS, penelitian ini berfokus pada penelitian berbicara (speaking) yang dilakukan oleh mahasiswa Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris pada IELTS Simulation Test untuk menganalisa kemampuan mahasiswa dalam melakukan tes keterampilan berbicara, serta menemukan faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi keberhasilan dan menjadi penghambat dalam melakukan tes simulasi yang diberikan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tingkat keterampilan mahasiswa dalam melakukan tes simulasi IELTS untuk keterampilan berbicara perlu untuk ditingkatkan lagi karena sebahagian besar mahasiswa masih berada pada rentang nilai 4-6. Sehingga, dapat dimaknai bahwa tingkat keterampilann mahasiswa dalam melakuan tes simulasi EITLS Speaking (Berbicara) sudah menunjukkan keterampilan yang cukup baik karena ada beberapa mahasiswa yang mampu meraih rentang nilai 7, dan sebahagian besar peserta tes juga sudah berada pada rentang 5-6, hanya beberapa mahasiswa yang berada pada rentang 4-4,5. Faktor latihan merupakan faktor utama yang mempengaruhi keberhasilan peserta tes untuk meningkatkan keterampilan mereka dalam berbicara Bahasa Inggris, namun seluruh mahasiswa yang diinterview mengemukakan bahwa mereka tidak melakukan persiapan khusus ketika mereka akan melakukan tes, sehinggan hasil yang mereka peroleh masih perlu untuk ditingkatkan. Selain itu, kecemasan pada saat melakukan tes berbicara mempengaruhi keterampilan peserta tes dalam menjawab pertanyaan yang diberikan, selain itu kesulitan peserta tes dalam memahami beberapa makna kata yang dituturkan oleh penguji menimbulkan kesulitan bagi peserta tes untuk merepon pertanyaan yang diajukan, namun mengetahui tips dan trik dalam melaukan tes IELTS Speaking dapat meminimalisir hal-hal yang dapat mengganggu selama pelaksanaan tes.  Kata Kunci : Berbicara, Tes Simulasi IELTS

Abstract

ABSTRACTMicro teaching is a teacher training technique for learning teaching skill. It employsreal teaching situation for developing skills and helps to get deeper knowledgeregarding the art of teaching. However, the teachers may give necessary backgroundfor the observation of a model or demonstration lesson on the selected teaching skill.Hence, Interest of becoming teacher is a person desire for something related to hisfuture or aims. It becomes an interest for a profession. Indeed, emerging the interest,one should be aware of his potency and capabilities he possesses. This study focuseson students’ peformance in micro teaching and field practice teaching at the seventhsemester of English Students of FKIP UIR which consists of 23 students as sample ofthis research. The researchers used descriptive method and have used score frommicro teaching and field practice teaching and questionnaires as a collecting data ofresearch. After collecting data from questionnaires and calculated the correlationbetween micro teaching score and field practice teaching score, the researchers havefound that robs was higher than r table( 0,713> 0,413) at level significant 5% and it wasthe same at level significant 1% the robs was higher than r table (0,713 > 0,525), fromthe result it can be concluded that null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and alternativehypothesis (Ha) was accepted. Then, the coefficient correlation of robserved was 0,713, itmeans that there was a high correlation between students’ peformance in microteaching and their performance in field practice teaching.

Abstract

In University level, speaking is one of important skill that used be mastered by the English Students, because it is necessary for them to improve their ability to communicate orally by presenting their ideas in real life. Hence, TED is a series of informative, educational, inspiring and sometimes jaw-dropping talks that present ‘Ideas Worth Spreading’. There is an emphasis on informing, educating and opening people’s eyes to new ideas, making them perfect for the classroom. Therefore, the students will have the opportunity to develop their spoken language competence. In relation to this, the researcher was interested in conducting a study which was focused on the effect of TED Talks Video toward students’ speaking ability at the third semester of English Study Program FKIP UIR. The researchers used experimental research and also used speaking test for pre-test and post-test in both of experiment class and control class as a collecting data of research. Based on the result, it can be seen that the value of t-obs was higher than that of t-table (3,217>2.056). In addition, the value of probability significance (2-tailed) column shows 0.002<0.05. Based on the analysis, those two criteria of rejection are fulfilled. Therefore, it can be concluded that the null hypothesis was rejected and alternative hyphotesis was accepted. Consequently, it could be seen that there was a significant mean difference between the experimental and the control groups. In summary, there was a significant effect of TED Talks video toward students’ speaking ability at English Study Program FKIP UIR

Abstract

Teaching speaking is an important part in the language teaching, as well as the assessing speaking. Therefore, teachers need to use some strategies in conducting the assessing speaking. Based on that issue, this research was aimed at exploring teachers’ strategies in assessing speaking skill. To explore the problems, case study with a qualitative approach was adopted. This research employed observation, questionnaire and interview in collecting the data and involved five teachers from MTsNAndalanPekanbaru. The collected data were analyzed by using flow data analysis process of Miles &Huberman (1994). The findings revealed that teachers apply the strategy of conducting the speaking assessment in the classroom which are started from the way they identify current status of classroom speaking assessment, the purpose of their speaking assessment, types speaking assessment, then selecting the teachers’ strategies of speaking assessment and last, teachers’ perceptions of the effectiveness of classroom speaking assessment. In general, teachers implementing some strategies in conducting the speaking assessment. There were discussion and conversation, question and answer, role play, repetition, etc. This research was expected to broaden teachers’ knowledge about strategies in assessing speaking in terms of the purpose and the type of assessment used, then teachers’ perceptions of speaking assessment.

Abstract

Speaking skill is an important part of the curriculum in language teaching, this makes it an important for students to be able to speak English. However, the goal of teaching speaking should improve students’ communicative skills as a way to help students express themselves and learn how to follow the social and cultural rules appropriate in each communication circumstance.Hence, Information Communication Technology (ICT) can be used by the English teacher to enhance students’ English Proficiency, especially speaking skill. Thus, the present study aims at investigating the role of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in speaking class at the first semester of English Students of FKIP UIR which consists of 42 students as sample of this research. The researchers used descriptive method and worked by using questionnaires as an instrument for collecting data. The researchers have found that the use of Information Communication Technology (ICT) increases students’ motivation and their speaking performances. It also has great impact on students learning’s effectiveness. In general, students prefered group work activities, free discussion, role play, or students’ presentation. A large number of students declared that their lecturer used technology while teaching speaking. They claimed that using ICThas beneficial and helpful to speak the language. Finally, most students affirmed that the use of ICT developed their speaking skill, increased their knowledge, and creativity. Concerning their attitudes towards their preferable kind of technology that can be used in teaching, some prefer to use laptop/notebook and projector while others enjoyed watching videos.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out the effectiveness and practicality of the product of digital storytelling in the online English classroom. The researchers, previously, noticed that the varieties of media needed to be developed in maintaining Malay folklore. This research offers insights into the effectiveness and practicality of digital storytelling in preserving Malay folklore. This research is using a mixed-method quantitative and qualitative design. This research population was Islamic junior high school students in the first grade from three schools in Pekanbaru and eight pre-service English teachers involved in implementing the digital storytelling videos. The evaluation results showed that the design of digital storytelling videos showed the effectivity of digital storytelling products was high and practically on how digital storytelling videos were developed and applied in English class was also high. The implementation of digital storytelling videos was successfully done by the pre-service students and the appropriateness was high which can be used in the online English classroom.
