Abstract

This paper examines a comprehensive picture of women’s advocacy in Beijing+20 and Commission on the Status of Women 59 New York that spoke against silencediplomacy led by Indonesian government. Indonesia was seen as most democratic Muslim country in the World by the UN. Yet Indonesia was not promoting works in human rights maximally, especially the advancement of women’s rights and children’s rights. Women’s Movement to advocate the previous two international meetings had successfully opened-up a more women-friendly advocacy to advance status of women and children under international gender instruments.

Abstract

This paper discusses women's labor activities in trade union and the obstacles they encounter. The discussion focuses on the three roles caried out by women factory workers in domestic space as mothers and wives and in public space as laborers as well as activists of labor organizations. The information in this paper derived from observations of women factory workers’ activities in union organization and two ethnographic books on factory workers’ resistance. The subject was chosen because for more than two decades there was no significant changes in the position of women in the labor movement. The research questions of this paper are what are the obstacles for women workers to work and organize like male workers? Why are male workers so dominant, even in industries where the workforce is mostly women? How can women play the role as mothers, as workers and as leaders of labor organizations? The results of the analysis show the role and stereotype of gender in patriarchal societies within labor organizations is a barrier for women to become a significant player in the labor movement. However, strong determination for women to fight injustice supported by personal qualities proves that women are able to perform in the triple activities all at once.

Abstract

Just like others, women undergone an imprisonment sentence also have specific women needs relating to biological, psychological condition, and the vulnerability as a woman. In Indonesia, the government commitment in fulfilling the special needs has started with the signing of a number of national and international regulations. The materialization of the commitment ismandated to the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, in this case is the Directorate General of Corrections that has a job and function relating to criminal execution. To see the seriousness of the government in executing the commitment, the Center for Detention Studies did a surveyon the quality of correctional service in 12 women penitentiaries involving 385 women inmates and 35 women detainees in 4 (four) different periods in between 2013-2015. The result shows that the commitment to provide the women special needs has not yet been done well. The strong patriarchal paradigm considering that women are not supposed to commit any crime causes some components in women detention to be not gender-sensitive yet. The shape of the building and the facilitation pattern shows that women are not expected to become an occupant of detention facility. As the consequence, the specific needs of women spending their time in detention facility are neglected.

Abstract

This paper is a synthesis of the results of the case studies on women’s situation in fisheries done by the members of the SEA Fish for Justice Network. The network is composed of 15 non-government and fishers organizations from the Southeast Asia region. It envisions equity in access to and control over off-shore, coastal and inland aquatic natural resources including the termination of suffering caused by unsustainable resources and/or privatized control over communal resources. The case studies were conducted by SEAFish Network members in Cambodia, Indonesia, Vietnam and Philippines in the second and third quarter of 2008 to highlight the roles, issues and challenges faced by women in coastal communities as well as the spaces provided them to facilitate their empowerment. The network members who conducted the studies were FACT (Cambodia), KIARA (Indonesia), MCD (Vietnam) and PROCESS-Bohol, CERD, and Tambuyog Development Center (CERD).

Abstract

This paper explores feminist pedagogy from the author’s experience, working as both an academic and activist in the women’s movement. The author does not separate pedagogy from personal experiences inside and outside the classroom. Feminist educators have a passion for their teaching and demand change. They demand confrontations and interruptions. This paper is an adventure in self-reflection of how the author’s experience as an activist affect teachings in the classrooms and how as an academic impact the public space. Many changes are needed in Indonesia’s higher education system, one of which makes the campus as a safe place, free from harassment and sexual violence, and diversity in sexual orientation.

Abstract

Sang Hyang Dedari Dance in religious ceremonies is not only aimed vertically to Sang Hyang Widhi, but also bearing horizontal objectives, to sustain stable structure in Bali society. This study aims to describe the layers of the society, so it can be understood critically what is meant by women of Bali—that the multicultural discourse, indigenous women celebrate the customs and traditions as an act against the root of patriarchy. Yet there is always a need to reexamine the roots. Root is not absolute, and a single tone, but rhizomes that question the hegemony of the hierarchy in winning gender equality against patriarchal subordination.

Abstract

This paper attempts to analyze maternal mortality in Nias Island, North Sumatra, where MMR is relatively higher than in other areas in Indonesia. This paper tries to examine the basic right highlighted in ICPD 1994 PoA. In addition, Corrêa and Petchesky propose that the fulfillment of women’s reproductive health rights must meet four principal elements, those are, bodily integrity, personhood, equality, and diversity. In line with the perspective suggested by Correa and Petchesky, this paper demonstrates the “omission, neglect, or discrimination” of women’s right for reproductive health. Social actors who play important roles in women’s reproductive health assessed in this paper are husbands, mother’s-in-law, TBAs, midwifes, and the government. This research concludes that maternal mortality in Nias and in Indonesia is a persistent problem since the social actors who are supposed to be responsible to prevent maternal mortality fail to do their job well. Instead, they tend to intentionally negate women’s right of reproductive health.

Abstract

The existence of Male to Female (MTF) or in Indonesian word known as Waria is more popular than Female to Male (FTM). Existence of FTM or someone biologically born as woman but identified herself as man is not well-researched and well-documented. That is why this group is difficult to be identified in the public discourse. Jakarta was chosen in this research as this city represented FTM from other areas around Indonesia. This study found that someone that biologically woman is not otomatically identified herself as woman. The process of self-definition is fluid. In the process of finding the self, FTM faced violences from states, society, work-place, and family.

Abstract

The chaotic political issues always accompany the nation of Indonesia until this day. One of them is reflected in political dimension which summarized on the intolerance narrative in the election of Jakarta governor in 2017. Nonetheless, gender and women dimensions seem to shrink from public attention. Within the framework of the state, the important role of women for national life is reduced in the ideology of ibuism. This ideology actually finds a way in triggering activation of women when adapting to Political Islam. For that reason, research question of this paper is how the ibuism of political Islam affect the perception and preferences of female voters in the election of Jakarta governor in 2017? In order to answer the question, this paper uses a qualitative methodology with a phenomenological approach. As the final result, this paper conclude that in the framework of ibuism of political Islam, women played a role as agent which directing women voter perception. It is worked in taklim's mobilization network where women voter are asked vow to vote or do not vote particular candidate in Jakarta governor election in 2017.
