Abstract

This research aimed to create an awareness campaign on raising the understanding of the topic as prevention toward the happiness and productivity-killing phenomenon or FoMO (Fear of Missing Out) phenomenon in young adults’ social media usage. Qualitaive method was applied in the research by (1) using questionnaire; (2) interviewing the psychological experts; (3) using secondary research such as books, journals, printed articles, and online sources. Then, the researchers drew a solution by analyzing the collected data. The distribution also focused on people who were active users of social media. This research finds that promoting positive thoughts in people who experience FoMO might be an effective solution to combat this type of anxiety. Therefore, the data become the underlying basis toward the making of SayNomoToFomo campaign. Its main strategy is to educate and encourage the target audience to understand and tackle FoMO using a mixture of interactive and printed medium.

Abstract

This research was compiled from the research results that aimed to understand the meaning of Rejang Pingit dance performance in the global era. This research was conducted because of the imbalance between assumptions and reality in real life. The people who lived in the global era should be more interesting with beautiful performances that were simply performed. However, the fact was different. Although Rejang Pingit dance was very simple, people of Geriana Kangin village preserved it. The question was what was the form of the Rejang Pingit dance performance, what was the meaning contained in the performance? This research used the qualitative method. The data sources of this research were Pingit Rejang dance performance, related informants, journals, and previous research results. All data that had been collected were analyzed using aesthetic theory, religious theory, and the theory of power relations. The results show that Rejang Pingit dance is performed in the form of dance off (with no play). It can be seen from the way of presentation, choreography, performance structure, dressing, makeup, and musical accompaniment of the performance. People of Geriana Kangin village continue to preserve Rejang Pingit dance because it is considered to have the meaning of aesthetic, religious, social, and cultural. Their belief in the myth of the essence of life that undergoes the Rejang Pingit dance is so strong so that they still preserve the dance up to now.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to know the strategies used by public relations of PT PERTAMINA (Persero) MOR III to improve brand awareness of 5,5 Kg Bright Gas product, which was new. The research used a qualitative descriptive method by case studies, which had restricted clearly through the existing focus research. The technique of data collection also acquired through a semi-structured interview, observation, documentation, and research reference. This research would respond to the strategy of public relations of PT PERTAMINA (Persero) MOR III to improve brand awareness of 5,5 Kg Bright Gas product. Attainment from this research told that public relations of PT PERTAMINA (Persero) MOR III have done PENCILS strategy to improve brand awareness of 5,5 Kg Bright Gas product. It concludes that public relations have done all of PENCILS strategy, however, the implementation of the strategy is not yet fully maximum. There are still many things that need to be considered related to planning strategy which is more complete and ready.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to analyze the magnitude and intensity of student commitment and attitude towards mathematics in secondary schools of Dega Woreda. A single case study with the involvement of 283 students of grade 10 and 12 of Dega Woreda and all mathematics teachers of the respective grades were considered. Purposive and simple random sampling techniques were employed to select the subjects of the study. Questionnaires and interview as tools for the collection of data were used. The findings reveal that students’scholastic performance is a pass mark and yet, it is not up to the expected level. Though students believe to have favorable attitude and commitment towards mathematics, their performance is very low especially on grade 10 and 12 national examinations. This implies that the behavioral (action) aspect of attitude towards mathematics is relatively the most challenging area in learning mathematics. The results indicate that there is no significant mean difference in attitude towards mathematics between male and female and between secondary and preparatory school students. It is suggested that mathematics teachers should apply appropriate methods of teaching, make an ongoing evaluation, and give continuous feedback to the students with the class size reduced to an optimum number of students (40 to 50). Teachers need to motivate and create conditions in which female students can effectively deal with mathematics classes. In this regard, professional women in science and technology fields may be invited to address how they succeeded in their study to build up the self-esteem of female students in mathematics.

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the use of an online TOEFL preparation course on the testperformance. The research method used was a quantitative method which emphasized on the objective measurements and the statistical analysis of collected data. The data were collected from the result of the online TOEFL test course program and the questionnaire to gain information about the students’ perception towards the use of online TOEFL preparation course on the test performance. The data were analyzed by using matchedtest to compare the result between the pre-test and the post-test. In addition, the means and percentages were used to analyze the questionnaire data to describe the students’ perception. The findings enrich theunderstanding on the use of TOEFL preparation program in improving TOEFL mastery on test performance.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to analyze how English address terms in “The Princess Diaries” were translated into Indonesian in “Buku Harian Sang Putri”, which published eight times that might indicate its popularity among Indonesian enthusiasts. This research applied content analysis method, particularly the theory of address terms postulated by Braun and Kridalaksana also the theory of translation strategies proposed by Baker, Newmark, and Vinay and Darbelnet. The data were both target and source address terms in dialogs. The address terms were grouped into subsets of the unit for analysis. The result shows English address terms are translated into 11 Indonesian address terms and ’konstruksi kepemilikan’ by using ten translation strategies. The research also shows that loan-address terms (full-loan and scattered-address terms) are chosen as a strategy to enhance the novel’s source atmosphere though they distort the target culture to some extent. To conclude, address terms aren’t always translated into address terms and pragmatic meaning’s distortion happens though various translation strategies are applied. It is necessary to conduct research on how to minimize loan address terms to maintain the source novel’s atmosphere without distorting the pragmatic meaning of Indonesian culture.

Abstract

The goal of this research was to find out the types of code-switching, and the reason of the participants performs code-switching in the conversation. Research used a qualitative approach. The result shows that three types of code-switching occurs in the conversation among bilingual in the junior high school reunion, they are intra-sentential mixing, intra-lexical code mixing, involving a change of pronunciation. The functions of codeswitching usage are as the marker of changing topic, to show their closeness as an old friend, and to show the close relationship among others. The close relationship between the speakers makes the feel free to switch from one language to another. Furthermore, the switching code also has another function as repetition is used to clarify the utterances of by the speakers. Moreover, the code-switching in the conversation are able to declare the excitement feeling towards a particular topic (the interesting topic) that they are talking about.

Abstract

This research explored the application of Islamic educational management for 7th graders at SMPN 1 Wonosegoro. The case study used interview, observation, and documentation to collect data which later were analyzed qualitatively. This school was chosen as the research setting because despite being a non-Islamic institution where religious and moral cultures were not commonly incorporated in the curriculum and school activities, it had several exceptional religious programs. It is found that their Islamic educational management is concerned to three major sub-areas namely; student orientation, curriculum, and extracurricular activities. These programs have been reviewed to have given significant impacts on their moral, social, and religious values proven with the very low number of student delinquency and a very good record of prayer habits among students.

Abstract

This research aimed to reveal different ways of thinking of society for men’s and women’s positions from the sociolinguistic point of view to accomplish the previous research. The research was conducted by studying language data in sentence formation on short story (fiction) and article (nonfiction). The short story and article used as data sources originated from internet media. This research used a qualitative descriptive method. The data were analyzed using equality and distributional methods. The finding data are classified into two: language form choice difference is based on linguistic factor and non-linguistic factor. Linguistic factor includes morphology, lexicon, phrase, compounds words, idiom. Non-linguistic factor includes the use of husband’s and wife’s names; call of husband’s name after wife’s proper name. The research shows that gender bias in Javanese society is expressed in differences in language forms choice to men and women. The language forms obtained from the data covers differences in language forms choice as caused by a social way of thinking to men’s and women’s status in daily life.

Abstract

This research intended to explore the relationship between language and gender by answering two research questions. First, it was how male and female respondents expressed directive forms. Second, it was what the social factors that influenced the choice of directive forms were. The two issues were considered urgent because gender was a variable that determined how people used language, including directive forms. Data were collected by distributing offline open-ended questionnaires to 18 students from the 2015-2017 batch of the English Language Education Study Program (ELESP) of Sanata Dharma University. The results show that to some extent females and males express directive forms differently. Men tend to be direct in expressing directive messages, while women use interrogative and declarative forms in delivering the messages since these forms are considered as more polite and less direct. Women tend to save their faces by using more indirect or polite forms because they avoid being considered impolite. Then, social class, the relationship between participants, and formality alsoinfluence the use of directive forms.
