Abstract

This research aimed to discuss performance assessment in Indonesia as well as learning strategies used by the students in its implementation. A qualitative case study was applied in this research. The researchers spread questionnaire and conducted an in-depth interview to derive the data. From the discussion, some conclusions are derived. First, performance assessment has advantages in EFL such as promoting high order thinking skill, making students familiar with various contexts of language use, presenting tasks which allow students to apply their knowledge and skills from several learning targets, using clearly defined criteria to evaluate how well the student has achieved this application, and increasing students’ motivation. However, there are disadvantages from this kind of assessment such as time-consuming, the assessment tends to be subjective, requiring intensive training for raters, and it may intimidate students. Furthermore, the students apply almost all of the learning strategies as follows meta-cognitive, cognitive, social, and affective strategies. The contribution offered by this research is to give evidence prevailing to Indonesian EFL learning. The teacher can support or provide students’ need by knowing their students’ strategies in learning. However, the students can adjust their learning strategies when performance assessment is implemented.

Abstract

This research aimed to see if learning by teaching (LBT) could really be implemented in classrooms. This case study intended to discover if LBT was applicable to teach tenses. This quantitative research involved 50 students from the two of 8th grade classes in one junior high school in Jakarta, one of which acted as the control group and the other one as the experimental group. This research focused on the learning of five tenses, namely the simple present tense, the simple past tense, the simple future tense, the simple present continuous tense, and the simple present perfect tense. A pre-test was employed before the research started and after the treatment had been given to the experimental group, a post-test was given a week after, and another post-test was given three months later. The results show that LBT helps the subjects learn better. Moreover, they also remember their materials longer. Therefore, LBT can be a good student-centered activity which has been proven successful.

Abstract

This research aimed to determine whether religiosity was able to be a moderator and strengthen the role of attitudes on CAM (Complementary and Alternative Medicine) as the originator of patient satisfaction in ‘sangkal putung’ treatment. The research applied a quantitative method with accidental sampling technique. The number of research respondents was 90 people aged 18 to 67 years old who visited the ‘sangkal putung’ at least twice and conducted treatment in the last 10 years. The research instrument used was SACAM (Scale for Attitude towards CAM) with the reliability of 0,843, PSQ-18 (Patient Satisfaction Questionnaire-Short Form) with the reliability of 0,859, and the Religiosity Scale was modified and rearranged based on the dimensions of religiosity by Stark & Glock with the reliability of 0,929. The research indicates that religiosity has a significant effect to strengthen the role of attitudes toward CAM as the originator of the treatment satisfaction of ‘sangkal putung’ patients. It means that the higher patient’s religiosity, the higher role of attitude towards CAM as the originator of the treatment satisfaction of ‘sangkal putung’ patients. Around 32,1% of the attitudes role towards cam works as a source of patient satisfaction of ‘sangkal putung’ treatment.

Abstract

The aims of this research were to investigate the Chinese language learning strategy used among students of Chinese Department class of 2021 Binus University, the relationship between gender and language learning strategy use, the relationship between language learning strategy and learning achievement, and also the language learning strategy used by students with high learning achievement in the subject of Grammar. This research used Oxford’s language learning strategy questionnaire that was “Strategy for Language Learning (SILL)” to investigate the students’ language learning strategy. This research finds out that the language learning strategy employed by the most students are metacognitive strategy and strategy to be used by high learning achievement students in grammar subject are also metacognitive strategy. It also finds out that female students use more language learning strategies compared to male students, although the difference is not too significant. Results of Pearson Correlation’s test indicate no significant relationship between the students’ language learning strategy and learning achievement. This research shows that there is no dominant language learning strategy used by Chinese Literature students.

Abstract

This research aimed to examine the relationship between family time and family structure with adolescents’ self-regulation in some selected Junior Secondary Schools, Harari Regional State, Ethiopia. To run on, data were collected through selfreporting questionnaire, standardized tests from 325 students selected through systematic sampling method. The data analysis was conducted using a t-test, Pearson product moment correlation, factorial ANOVA, and multiple regression. This research indicates that adolescents have a slightly lower level of self-regulatory behavior. There is a statistically significant relationship between adolescents’ self-regulation and family time, family structure, and family time activity. Family time activity especially those who have leisure or recreation time together has significantly influencing adolescence self-regulation; however, gender could not make such effect independently as well as in combination with family time activity. Moreover, among others, family time activity and family structure are found to be important predictors of adolescents’ self-regulatory skills. Among the variability, family time activity significantly has added to the prediction of self-regulation, accounting for 14,8% of the variability, while, family time activity and family structure together have added 17,7% of the variability. In the end, recommendations are also made for how to properly address the gaps noted in this research.

Abstract

The main aim of this research was to assess the socio-economic impact of local alcohol consumption among adult in Haramaya town, East Hararghe, Ethiopia. A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted from April to June 2018 using mixed methods of data collection. A total of 120 samples were included in the research. The most consuming local alcohols were Tell, Katikala, and Tej respectively in the research area. The research found the current prevalence of consuming local alcohol practices was among male sex, productive age groups, followers orthodox church, married respondents, illiterate respondents, and the respondents with low daily income (daily laborers). Besides that, it finds out that consuming local alcohol are leading to different socio-economic problems, such as social problems (discrimination, failure to role play, and low social interaction), economic problems (poverty and lack of saving resources), health problems (headache, vomiting, and loss of appetite), and problems of domestic violence (divorce and lack of proper socialization of their children). Thegovernment with stakeholders should develop a policy to control the production and disruption of local alcohol, as well as develop coping mechanisms for the consumers, producers, and sellers.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the engagement between local visitor with objects in a conventional exhibition space and a technology-based exhibition space. The method of this research was a qualitative method with descriptive analysis. The data collection was done in two stages. The first stage was collecting secondary data or desk research. The next stage was the primary data collection using both qualitative and quantitative methods. Data were collected in two exhibition spaces; Riau Islands Province pavilion in Taman Mini Indonesia Indah as conventional exhibition space, and Indonesia Kaya Gallery that was located in the Grand Indonesia shopping mall as a technology-based exhibition space. The research shows visitors’ engagement emerges not only because of the objects itself but also of its surroundings; the path and signage, the lighting design, how the objects displayed and labeled that will create certain engagement with its audience. Technology also gives great help to create subject-object engagement. However, to appreciate and really engaged with the objects, the audience still wants to see real objects and not the digital substituted.

Abstract

The goal of this research was to add visual-captured data and analytical from the aspects of function as inputs for designers to be able to propose design on revitalizing the area of Taman Fatahillah. There were two problems that had been found. First, the historical street furniture had not been thought to be part of a new development of the area. Second, the newly added street furniture had not been integrated into the original purpose of Taman Fatahillah. The research used qualitative descriptive methodology with observation and visual-captured methods to collect all data needed. The conclusions are the seating furniture from the old plan has been changed its function, some of them function properly, and one of them does not function properly. Part of the newly added seating furniture in this area functionally works, but one of them does not functionally integrate into the surroundings of Taman Fatahillah as a historical revitalized public area.

Abstract

This research discussed Jamaican Sound Keroncong (JSK) as a communication media in the global era. The problem of research was that keroncong music tended to be unknown by most young people in Bandung, and it was lost almost a century among them. This research aimed to examine the communication between the structure, agents (SirIyai), and sub-agents (Crispy Crue/the fans), and the appreciation of the keroncong community in Bandung for their performances. Spredlay ethnographic methods were applied. SirIyai was trusted informants and participatory observations, and in-depth interviews were carried out within one year. The research finds that; (1) SirIyai creates a communication media product under the name of JSK as the binding structure between SirIyai as the agent and CCI as the sub-agent; (2) the development of the internet creates dynamics and generates communication space; (3) communication of musical instruments is the basic idea of JSK product creation as communication media; and (4) there is a fundamental change of the old keroncong communication system to that of the youth keroncong in the global era. SirIyai is considered as the role model of the recent keroncong communication and becomes the parameter of creativity of musical mixture of global music era in Bandung.

Abstract

This research aimed at investigating the male and female students’ preferences on the six types of Oral Corrective Feedback (OCF). This qualitative research used observation and interview to collect data. The observation was done to know the practice of the six types of OCF in speaking class and the interview was conducted to reveal the students’ preferences for OCF. The result from the observation shows that the lecturer mostly uses Explicit Correction to correct the students’ error. Then, the result from the interview indicates that male students prefer to have Explicit Correction because this type is the easiest type to know the error and correction clearly. Whereas the female students prefer to have Recast and Metalinguistic Feedback because Recast does not encourage them and Metalinguistic Feedback can make them think critically under the lecturer’s clue. Subsequently, both male and female students perceive Clarification Request and Repetition as the ambiguous type to grasp what the lecturer’s mean. The result of this current research is expected to provide an additional information about the practice of OCF strategies in speaking classroom which is appropriate with the students’ preferences.
