Abstract

The article presented how to learn an Indonesian folktale entitled Timun Emas which related to the process of the environment. The elements of fiction in this folktale, the setting, was a clue in relating the nature and the human which was part of eco-criticism. This research presented the earth-centered approach to literary studies to see how nature was represented in this folktale, what role of the physical setting played in the plot, the values expressed in this folktale, how metaphor of the land influenced the way human treated it, how the concept of wilderness had changed over time, in what way literacy itself had affected humankind relationship to the natural world. It also analyzed the interconnections between culture and nature, specifically the cultural artifacts oflanguage and literature, understanding the ethical system and use it to reform them. This research used a qualitative method which was based on library research. The theory of Glotfelty then was combined with Anthropocentrism to see the human as the center of the hemisphere and how they determine the ecosystem and the policy related to nature. It is concluded that Timun Mas is able to represent the Indonesian culture, human and nature relationship, as well as culture and nature relationship drawn from the values and belief in the folklore.

Abstract

This research aimed to provide theoretical benefits for students, practitioners of infographics as the enrichment, especially for Desain Komunikasi Visual (DKV - Visual Communication Design) courses and solve the occurring visual problems. Theories related to infographic problems were used to analyze the examples ofthe student's infographic work. Moreover, the qualitative method was used for data collection in the form of literature study, observation, and documentation. The results of this research show that in general the students are less precise in the selection and usage of visual literacy elements, and the hierarchy is not good. Thus, it reduces the clarity and effectiveness of the infographic function. This is the urgency of this study about how to formulate a pattern or formula in making a work that is not only good and beautiful but also is smart, creative, and informative.

Abstract

This research examined the practice of wearing the hijab among Hampton Roads Muslim women of Islamic Center of Tidewater (known as the ODU Mosque) in Norfolk, Virginia. This research asked two main questions: how did Muslim women at the ODU Mosque negotiate the social meanings embedded in the hijab? And, how did the ODU mosque as a cultural institution and as a multicultural space for Muslim women shape their practice of wearing the hijab? This research followed qualitative research method. The observation was primarily conducted during November 2017. For this research, interviews were conducted with five Muslim women who were at least 18 years of age, resided in Norfolk. This research finds that there is a cultural hybridization of the practices of wearing the hijab among Muslim women of this community. Moreover, by using the concept of ‘space’ by de Certeau, the researchers contend that the mosque has become not only a place of worship but space for them to interact and negotiate their Islamic practices or so-called their Muslimness. The ODU mosque is a space for them to negotiate their practices of Islamic rulings including the hijab.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to develop students’ skill in script writing as it was one of the obligations for final year students of English Department, State Polytechnic of Padang (PNP). A qualitative study which was based on the theory of writing task stages highlighted by the expert in this area was taken. The analysis itself was perceived by applying ‘Guided Writing Task’ stages; Draw and Write Task and Shared Task which resulted in a few written draft scripts. For the triangulation to validate the data, a list of the question was conveyed to the students. The implementation of these two tasks and the students’ answer for the questionnaire show that this research has been helpful in improving their script writing skills, particularly on the grammar and organization of how a script should be written.

Abstract

The purposes of the research were to find out whether the communicative competence in English speaking skills had a significant relationship with students' cognitive abilities was English speaking skill the most important achievement. How cognitive abilities and communicative competencies in English speaking skills were managed for the primary purposes of the English debating team. This research combined both qualitative and quantitative research. It used a descriptive method by distributing questionnaire, doing a survey, using observation, and doing an in-depth interview as the methods to collect data. The informants were twelve students who participated in the national teams of English Debating Championship of Institut Seni Indonesia Yogyakarta from 2013-2017. The results of this research reveal that there is a significant connection between communicative competence and cognitive ability in which cognitive ability has an important impact on thinking, critical analysis, and creativity. Furthermore, cognitive ability gives a direct influence on communicative competence in speaking English. This communicative competence is reflected in the ability to produce critical-intellectual andcommunicative-factual sentences in doing the analysis and giving the argumentation.

Abstract

This research was conducted to discover innovative and interesting methods to preserve also to reintroduce Javanese folktale to today’s society. The data were gathered from primary research through quantitative research to 104 respondents to know about folktale and opinion of modern preservation medium such as augmented reality medium, and also qualitative research through an in-depth interview to enrich the researcher’s fashion knowledge about printed technic and fabrics. Besides primary research, the researchers also conducted secondary research through various sources such as websites, e-articles, survey, and interview. The result of this research is an interactive scarf as a collaboration of fashion accessory as a physical medium and augmented reality technology to enhance its interactive experience. Based on the survey held, the most favorite fashion accessory among woman from the age of 18 until 30 years old is a scarf. Most women will have a scarf inside their bag, just in case they need it. By making an illustration of Javanese folktale on a scarf, it will hopefully attract the target market to retrace their memory and raise people’s awareness about Javanese folktale that seems to be forgotten in today’s era. The usage of augmented reality feature in this research is to give further information such as videos, images, or texts towards the illustration of the scarf by scanning the pattern by using the user’s smartphone.

Abstract

This research aimed to determine the validity, practicalities, and effectiveness development of student worksheet on materials economy based on problem solving for Junior High School students Yayasan Pendidikan Islam (YPI) Tunas Bangsa Palembang. This research was developed consisting of four stages; define, design, develop, and disseminate known as 4D development models. The instruments were the validation sheet, questionnaire, observation sheet, and test sheet. The research and development data consisted of the qualitativeand quantitative data. The qualitative data in the form of learning support facility, readability from the draft of student worksheet with problem-based instructions that were developed, and students’ response against using student worksheet with problem-based instructions. While the quantitative data was in the form of test results of student learning. Based on the results of this research, it concludes that the student developed worksheet with problem-based instruction is valid, practical, and effective, so it is very well used by the teacher as a supplement in teaching to complement the teaching materials in the learning process.

Abstract

This research examined the main female character in the movie "Arrival" by Eric Heisserer. The focus of this research was to know the form of personality, desire, the fulfillment of desires, and to find out psychic conflict that is experienced by her by using the theory of Freud and Lacan. The research applied qualitative method by doing steps of using data collection, data analysis, and data presentation. The results show that Dr. Louise Bank has a different woman personality from other women in general, where Id dominates some of the behaviors shown her. Her desire is always followed by an effort in fulfilling; it is shown by Dr. Louise Bank who can use her intuitive, logical mind well to find some ways and solutions in the process of solving it. The most prevalent psychic conflicts in her are the fear and anxiety of new experiences and glance of visions that always keep her in an unpleasant state or condition.

Abstract

This research aimed to look further at Taman Mini Indonesia Indah’s (TMII) role in education and to enrich its visitors through exhibition design inside their main attraction, the traditional houses. It used the qualitative methods through observation of three randomly selected pavilions and data analysis used SWOT analysis and goal grid diagram. The research shows that there are no engagements between objects and visitors, the exhibitions are still lack of planning, visually unattractive and unavailability of information or written texts for most of its collection, which can be concluded that TMII is still far from achieving their educational goal. The result of this research is preliminary design for display cases that can be used in pavilions and corresponds design standards.

Abstract

This research aimed to test the efficacy of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and psychoeducation methods to decrease anxiety level in arrhythmia patient. Besides that, it was also to discuss how CBT could reduce anxiety level on a subject who had Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and also had the medical disease. This research used the qualitative method. The subject in this research was a 22-years-old single female, called S (initials), who came to community health center (Puskesmas) to get help regarding her uncomfortable feelings about her thoughts and concerns. The subject was given a pre-post test using Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS) to see the differences in the anxiety level before, during, and after the treatment. Results of the research show that the level of anxiety in the subject is decreased. The categorization score goes from “very severe anxiety” to “moderate anxiety”. The subject also conveys on the last session that she feels less anxious and that she can control her negative thought.
