Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the use of an online TOEFL preparation course on the testperformance. The research method used was a quantitative method which emphasized on the objective measurements and the statistical analysis of collected data. The data were collected from the result of the online TOEFL test course program and the questionnaire to gain information about the students’ perception towards the use of online TOEFL preparation course on the test performance. The data were analyzed by using matchedtest to compare the result between the pre-test and the post-test. In addition, the means and percentages were used to analyze the questionnaire data to describe the students’ perception. The findings enrich theunderstanding on the use of TOEFL preparation program in improving TOEFL mastery on test performance.

Abstract

Poster is a communications media that are generally in a large enough format with persuasive and informative messages, pasted on the walls on the roadside and residential alleys. Posters can be so effective in conveying the message as a poster is close to the heart of society. The effectiveness of posters in conveying the message can be seen in the winning poster design of the Smiling Poster Contest 2010. The purpose of this article is to see the effectiveness of communication and poster design in a persuasive smile. A smiling poster is intended to foster and to remind the meaning of a smile in socializing. Concern of poster designers were divided into concern for social problems that occur in society and concern in the development of poster design creativity. Technical and strategic skills are needed by designers of the poster. Since poster design works well, it will eventually become a communicative medium in conveying social messages, becomes the driving motivation in positive, open, creative and inspiring thinking.

Abstract

Personality aspect is an aspect that cannot be discharged in an individual. It is as same as communication aspect, which is important in a relationship, including in marriage relationship. The purpose of this study is to determine whether there is a correlation between Extrovert and Introvert personality type with intimate communication phases in early adulthood. This study belongs to the type of correlation research. In this study, the result showed that there was a positive relationship between extrovert personality type with two phases of intimate communication, namely sharing the self and becoming one. Meanwhile, there was a negative relationship between Introvert personality typet with two phases of intimate communication, namely sharing the self and becoming one.

Abstract

Popularity is coveted by politicians before general election. Politicians who have high popularity have a much larger capital to be successfully elected in general election. In contrast, ordinary or even low popularity will be difficult for politicians to win public institution seats contested. The problem is about how to increase the popularity for politicians. This paper discusses about relationship between the popularity of politicians with political work and the greatness of television, whether it is true that the increase in popularity of politicians can only be done with political work, or in the contrary, the increase in the popularity of politicians can be done with the use of television media, as the media are most widely used in the community. Discussion of this paper was done using literature study obtained from political communication and mass communication books related to this matter. In addition, data from recent news media, especially regarding the popularity of the politicians, political work and the use of television media in general elections were also used to enrich this paper. Result of this literature study concludes that popularity of the politicians has become a major requirement for politicians to succeed in general election. Popularity of the politicians is synonymous with political work. Political work done continuously in approaching the constituent is the way to boost the popularity. Nevertheless, the political work is not enough. Currently, efforts to boost popularity needs mass media, especially television, which can introduce politicians to their constituents who are also the television audience.

Abstract

Kartika Wijaya Hotel and Niagara Hotel-Malang are two heritage buildings, which are well managed to preserve their historical building that, has been established since 1891. We can find good harmony and variety in interior elements and design styles, such as Colonial style, Art Noveau and Art Deco style. The purpose of documentating this heritage building that has different design styles is for those who needed. The data will be classified according to the period of the development of the buildings and characteristics of existing styles. The research objective on Kartika Wijaya hotel building and art styles is to preserve historic buildings in Indonesia, through documentation of interior elements and architectures, and to conducted a study of the interior and architectures elements, interior design ornaments, that founded in historical Kartika Wijaya Hotel and Niagara Hotel in Malang, whose the existence needs to be preserved.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the factors affecting adult education in the eastern part of Ethiopia. The study employed a survey design that involved qualitative and quantitative approaches. A stratified random sampling technique was used to select 515 male and 285 female respondents. A questionnaire and an interview for collecting information from the primary sources were designed and implemented. Data were analyzed with linear correlation and Ordinary Least Square (OLS) regression. The findings indicated that the relationship of overall adult learning achievement to assessment of learning (r = 0,29, P < 0,01), and the methods used by facilitators (r = 0,23, P < 0,01) is positive and significant. The regression model demonstrated that overall adult learning condition is significantly affected by variables such as relevance of the content, methods of teaching, assessment of learning outcome, and locality of the adult education learners.

Abstract

In the latest couple years, both public and private sectors are doing some efforts and innovations to promote several arts and furniture in Indonesia; through media, cooperation program and exhibitions all over the world. However, this is not effective enough to increase furniture production to better level, especially regarding micro central industry. The micro central industry, especially wood central industry in several areas in Java, mostly has stagnant condition in both local and international. Based on the research in wood central industry in Java, there are factors as the effects: the scarcity and quality of wood material, technology dominance of limited woods, less innovation in designing, unintegrated promotion and marketing and also less strategic planning from the government to develop minor industry. This needs to be analysed according to the condition and need of minor central industry.

Abstract

This study explains the management of “Bharata” reputation, an Icon of classic, legendary, theatrical; traditional performing arts of Indonesia. Puppet has noble values in terms of moral education and philosophy of life; and “Bharata” becomes the "sacred" place for the preservation of the noble values of the puppet. “Bharata” is an institution that manages sustainable reputation and have to defend against the onslaught of competition from other institutions as a tourism destination. “Bharata” is a picture of a long journey and process of proving the majesty of traditional culture that owned by Indonesia. This study used post positivist paradigm. The nature of the study was descriptive and the selected approach was qualitative with in-depth interviews and observation for collecting data. Narrative analysis was used to analyze this study. The aim of this study has reviewed the reputation management of “Bharata” in its struggle of facing the globalization. The reputation management of “Bharata” is the results of coordination and socialization process within the institution; it is achieved through cooperation of each department by communication power.

Abstract

Binus University, established in 1974 and located in West Jakarta, is one of famous universities in Indonesia. This university has some literature departments including Chinese literature department which was started in 2002. At this moment, this department has 419 students and 28 lecturers who have different background. The difference of the students and lecturers’ point of view becomes one the backgrounds of this paper. The others are text books used, campus rules and alternative solution toward the problem faced. The method used in this research is direct observation. From the data taken and analyzed, it can be concluded: (1) Chinese department students, either Chinese descendant or not, has problems in learning Chinese, (2) The number of lecturers of Bachelor graduates is more than the master ones, (3) The Chinese language mastery of Chinese descendant students is better than non Chinese descendant ones, (4) The text books used are not all suitable for Chinese department student, and (5) The quality control system of Chinese teaching is good.

Abstract

Research discusses the different use of Japanese verbs benkyousuru, manabu, renshuusuru, and narau associated with the use of nouns attaching to the verbs. Data corpus was taken from magazine Jakarta Communication Club: Apa Kabar, Vol 50, 2010. The research applied qualitative study using descriptive analysis method. Research aims to give better understanding for Japanese language learners in using the Japanese verbs benkyousuru, manabu, renshuusuru, narau. Besides, the learners can use these verbs properly as well. Result of the research shows that the verbs have different use and also different use of nouns attaching on the verbs.
