Abstract

ASEAN Free Trade will be started in 2015 and at that time global competition, especially between the countries of ASEAN would be more competititive. In ASEAN free trade area, every country in ASEAN could not simply disallow the incoming of foreign workers. Companies will be filled by workers from various countries, especially workers from ASEAN countries. Not only the government should prepare everything to face the ASEAN Free Trade, but also the working-age individuals need to prepare themselves to get involve in this competition. Preparation should be done by an individual in addition to being competent in his field, an individual also must have an adequate understanding of cultural diversity and its impact on a person's personality as well as how to deal with cultural diversity and challenges. Therefore, it takes a certain individual to the character to be able to work together with people with different cultures. This article was prepared based on need, using empirical observations and experience, as well as library research to answer all the problems that will confront every individual working age in the era of ASEAN Free Trade.

Abstract

The study of discourse is the study of using language in actual use. In this article, the writer is trying to investigate the phonological features, either segmental or supra-segmental, in the spoken discourse of Indonesian university students. The data were taken from the recordings of 15 conversations by 30 students of Bina Nusantara University who are taking English Entrant subject (TOEFL ?IBT). Finally, the writer is in opinion that the students are still influenced by their first language in their spoken discourse. This results in English with Indonesian accent. Even though it does not cause misunderstanding at the moment, this may become problematic if they have to communicate in the real world.

Abstract

The authors conducted a study related to using English in learning mathematics, for grade 7 junior high school students in a private national plus school. The purpose of this study was for the reader to open up further insights related to the topic. This study was carried out with experimental design, by doing different treatment between classes in the same level. The subjects of the study consisted of 63 students spread into three classes; 7A, 7B, and 7C. Class 7C was a control group, using Bahasa Indonesia (mother tongue) in learning Mathematics. Class 7A and 7B were the experimental groups, where 7A was in English and 7B used bilingual (English and Indonesian). Results of the study include the following; using English is not detrimental to the students in mark achievement that is shown by the average of the final mark of Mathematics that is not significantly different. The challenges that arise from learning Mathematics need to be reviewed from the process, readiness, independence, motivation of students and needs to be followed up critically so that students can achieve better results. Short and long-term programs need to be created and observed in order to support the learning process of Mathematics for students, such as training teachers to be able to teach mathematics in English, in supporting action study by teachers, managed by the school.

Abstract

Television is the most common medium for people to update the latest information around the world, for more than fifty years. Now, the development of television has grown rapidly to present a picture, even to bring fun to watch movies at home. With HDTV technology, consumers can now enjoy more highly detailed images to be enjoyed with family. This article is based on literature study, on printed and electronic references. The higher the TV resolution does not mean that the picture performance will be better. For HD format, there are 720 vertical lines; meanwhile for full HD there are 1080 vertical lines. TV in low resolution perhaps having good picture quality, but not all the luxury could be enjoyed in details like in HD or full HD format.

Abstract

This study began with the researcher?s interest to transform learning strategy in Japanese computer which has been longstanding in conventional way. In previous studies the Jigsaw cooperative strategy had been tested in the exact sciences in College. The researcher was challenged to bring the instructional materials of Japanese computer which are felt quite hard by students to be easier with mutual assistance. Heavy load materials are minimized. Learners must actively explore materials; it is not only from the teacher. The Jigsaw cooperative strategy was tested on three-semester students in order to determine the effectiveness of Jigsaw cooperative in Japanese computer learning. This study used pure experiment. The design involved two groups of subjects, one given by the experimental treatment with the Jigsaw cooperative strategy (experimental group) and the other group (control group) with usual learning technique. Data were taken in two ways: quantitative by making instruments such pretest and posttest to the two classes and qualitative by interview to complete the descriptive data analysis result. Furthermore, all results of the pretest and posttest were analyzed by measuring the normality and t-test to determine how the Jigsaw strategy successfully applied on the samples. To collaborate the results, the interviews were transcribed to see the response from samples on the Jigsaw cooperative strategy in Japanese computer learning. Results of the test data analysis in the experimental group and the control group showed that the Jigsaw cooperative strategy was proved more effective in Japanese computer learning than the conventional method usually used.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to analyze how English address terms in ?The Princess Diaries? were translated into Indonesian in ?Buku Harian Sang Putri?, which published eight times that might indicate its popularity among Indonesian enthusiasts. This research applied content analysis method, particularly the theory of address terms postulated by Braun and Kridalaksana also the theory of translation strategies proposed by Baker, Newmark, and Vinay and Darbelnet. The data were both target and source address terms in dialogs. The address terms were grouped into subsets of the unit for analysis. The result shows English address terms are translated into 11 Indonesian address terms and ?konstruksi kepemilikan? by using ten translation strategies. The research also shows that loan-address terms (full-loan and scattered-address terms) are chosen as a strategy to enhance the novel?s source atmosphere though they distort the target culture to some extent. To conclude, address terms aren?t always translated into address terms and pragmatic meaning?s distortion happens though various translation strategies are applied. It is necessary to conduct research on how to minimize loan address terms to maintain the source novel?s atmosphere without distorting the pragmatic meaning of Indonesian culture.

Abstract

Basic element of subject is point / dot. Line, shape, form (two-dimensional and three-dimensional), and other structures (geometrically or ornamentally) are formed by a group or more points. The variety of size and composition of point will illustrate the characteristic of that point. Interesting composition will create a great artwork. Despite of variety of the structure, the technical process of colour dots had been developed for a long time. During the development of Impressionism art, some artists had tried to apply the colour dots as a new technique, which called Pointillism. Georges Seurat was a pioneerof this technique development. Pointillism was well known as Divisionism or Chromoluminarism at that moment. This technique was using an additive method that combined basic pigment colours of red, green and blue to produce optical vibration in the painting, therefore the viewers would be able to reach the maximum luminosity in their vision. The existence of this technique had proved that science and art were able to support each other. The combination of logic and aesthetic were able to create many extraordinary artworks.

Abstract

The goals of the research were to compile a reading material that was able to measure the fifth year primary students? comprehension to the Betawi folklore which represented Indonesian culture; the value found in the Betawi folklore, and to increase their writing skills based on the vocabulary in context assessment. A library research was applied by selecting the story suitable for primary school students, translating materials, simplifying the reading, and making reading exercise to develop student?s reading comprehension skills. Reading materials and exercises were focused to the fifth year primary students who have been learning English for more than three years. It can be concluded that the interesting reading materials can be compiled from the original Indonesian folklore entitled ?The Old Sly Stork? to support students? achievement in finding the story?s values, and students? skills in writing based on the reading materials, value, and their daily life experiences.

Abstract

This article aims to show that behind the new version of Genesis by Mark Twain in his novel The Diary of Adam and Eve, there are some patriarchal principles that appear in it. It can be seen from the characterizations of Adam and Eve. By using some concepts from feminism and also focusing on the context of the novel, the analysis shows that patriarchal stereotypes about gender are applied in constructing the characters of Adam and Eve. Not only the content, but the form of the diary is also analyzed with the same method, and the same result is found. Therefore, it can be concluded that in spite of his progressiveness, Mark Twain still held patriarchal values in re-interpreting the tale of human creation.

Abstract

Phenomena of citizen journalism had accepted and become part of cyber media. Cyber media owned and managed by press companies had featured citizen journalists? information, critics, opinions, and news. Citizen journalism was part of freedom of expression. However, in Indonesia?s press law concept, it was not part of the national press. This created legal issues regarding protection and legal responsibility aspects for both parties. A qualitative research was conducting to solving these issues. Using secondary data from literature study and observation on several cyber media websites, this discovers two conclusions. First, the citizen journalist is part of freedom of the press; it means that a citizen journalist?s creation has protected form censor and bans. However, a citizen journalist still has a limitation which shall be complied videlicet Civil Code and Law No. 11 The year 2008 concerning Information and Electronic Transaction. Violation of both regulations means that a citizen journalist shall be legally responsible. Second, protection and responsibility border between a citizen journalist and press company are based on an agreement. Approval of term and condition of general user content in a website from a citizen journalist means that both parties have agreed to enter into an agreement. A press company might be freed of its legal responsibility as long as conducted its obligation to control and manage contents that have been uploaded and published by a citizen journalist. If the company does not take proportional action against citizen journalist? contents that violating the law, the press company shall be requested its civil or criminal legal responsibility.
