Abstract

Rattan is one of the monocotyl species, which is economically important. Rattan culm is used for furniture, souvenir and housewares. Indonesian rattan varies accordingly, but only about 30% of them have been developed. This paper describes anatomical structure of three rattan species to get information about its utilization. Three rattan species namely Balubuk (Calamus burchianus Becc.), Lilin (Calamus javensis Bl.) and Tretes (Calamus heteroideus Bl.) were used as samples. Macroscopically, anatomical structure was observed on massive rattan culm, while microscopically was observed from microtome-sectioned samples. Fibre dimension was observed from macerated samples. All anatomical quantities were compared to those of Manau rattan, since its utilization has been known. The metaxylem diameter of those three rattans was bigger than that of Manau rattan, so that those rattans were less durable than Manau. Fibre of rattan studied was shorter and thinner than that of Manau, as a result their strength were lower than that of Manau rattan. As their strength were less than Manau, the utilization of these three species was not recommended to work on direct forces

Abstract

Recently, awareness of using natural adhesive materials for biocomposite products was increased. However, natural adhesive still facing many problems on physical and mechanical properties of the resulting biocomposite products. Therefore, adhesive modifications are needed in order to improve natural adhesives performance. The purpose of this study is to understand the effect of additive substance and concentration in cowhide adhesive on Jabon (Anthocephalus cadamba) laminated wood. Three types of additive substance (paraformaldehyde, polyurethane and albumin) were added into cowhide adhesive with three different concentration (10, 20 and 30%). The testing were conducted on moisture content, density, shear strength, and delamination. Shear strength was tested according to ASTM D-905 while moisture content, density, and delamination were tested according to JAS 234:2003 standard for Glue Laminated Timber. The results showed that all treatment were not affecting moisture content and density. In addition, additive substance was affecting shear strength and delamination. Nonetheless, concentration of additive substance was only affecting shear strength. The best shear strength value were 63.75 kg cm-2. The value meets the JAS 234:2003 standard. Compared to all of the treatment applied, the best result was achieved by 30% paraformaldehyde addition. Based on this experiment, laminated wood is suitable for interior application. Keywords: bio-adhesive, cowhide adhesive, jabon, laminated wood

Abstract

The effect of corn steep liquor (CSL) loading on white rot fungi inoculums in the biochemical pulping of betung bamboo was investigated. The best condition of the pretreatment was also determined. There were two conditions of CSL amount used i.e. 1% (v/w) and 10 % (v/w) of CSL used in 100 ml of inoculums. In short, fresh bamboo chips without bark was incubated with Phanaerochaete chrysosporium inoculum stocks for 30 and 45 days at room temperature and followed by Kraft and Soda pulpings. SEM images of pretreated chips were taken after incubation. The pulp yield, Kappa number, freeness, delignification selectivity, and brightness were analyzed. The more CSL amount added with Kraft process gave better results on pulp yield. Increasing incubation time increased pulp yields and decreased the Kappa numbers. On the other hand, freeness and brightness of pulp increased especially for Kraft process. The SEM images showed that there were cell walls degradation activities. The best properties of pulp were obtained by the Kraft process for the treatment of 10% CSL with 30 days of incubation time.Key words: betung bamboo, biochemical pulping, corn steep liquor, Phanaerochaete chrysosporium

Abstract

As a natural fiber and agricultural by-product, corn stalks (Zea mays saccharata) is considered as an alternative raw material to produce particleboard. Corn stalks is a good source of lignocelluloses, renewable and low cost. This research was aimed to investigate the characteristics of corn stalk particleboard with citric acid as adhesive. This study also evaluated bonding mechanism particle with citric acid and the bonds between celluloses derived corn stalk with citric acid. The boards were manufactured under the hot pressing temperature 200 oC for 10 min. The citric acid concentration was varied in 0, 15, 20 and 25 wt%. The board size and target density were (25 x 25 x 0.9) mm3 and 0.8 g.cm-3. Results showed that the physical properties of particleboards improved with increasing citric acid concentration up to 20 wt%. At the optimum citric acid content of 20 wt% could provide particleboards with the modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity and internal bonding satisfied the requirement of the 13 type of the JIS A 5908 (2003) standard. Infrared (IR) spectral analysis from board which manufactured from isolated cellulose was mixed citric acid and pressed on temperature 200 oC showed the presence of ester linkages that the carboxyl and hydroxyl groups of citric acid had reacted with the hydroxyl groups of corn stalk cellulose. Keywords : citric acid, corn stalk, concentration, particleboard, adhesive

Abstract

The objective of this study was to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of bamboo oriented strand board (OSB) from andong (Gigantochloa pseudoarundinacea) with steam treatment on strand at various shelling ratios. Strands were steam-treated at 126 ºC for 1 h under 0.14 MPa pressure. Three-layer OBSB with the core layer perpendicular to the surface at various shelling ratio (15/70/15, 20/60/20, 25/50/25, 30/40/30) was formed and bonded with 8% of phenol formaldehyde resin. Wax was added amount of 1% based on oven dry strand. The evaluation of physical and mechanical properties of the boards was conducted in accordance to the JIS A 5908:2003 standard. Steam treatment tended to increase the dimensional stability and mechanical properties of OBSB from andong. The higher shelling ratio increased the parallel flexural properties, but decreased the perpendicular flexural properties.

Abstract

This research aims to understand the behavior of elastic bending curve on several types of timber laminated beams using bolts and combination of bolt-adhesive as connector among the timber layers. The beams are divided into types A, B, and C based on position of bolts and adhesive on beam. Flexural testing is conducted with one-point loading method using 5 tons capacity of Instron machine. The test results are then compared with theory of beam deflection by Euler-Bernoulli and Timoshenko. The research concludes that Timoshenko beam equation is accurate enough to predict the elastic behavior of beams. Deflection obtained from experiment is about two times larger than Euler-Bernoulli beam and not more than 1% error to Timoshenko. Keywords: adhesive, bolts, elastic behavior, flexural testing, laminated beam

Abstract

The characteristic of coconut timber as anisotropic material should be known for efficiency of flexure structure application. So the influence of L/d factor and the curvature of stress-strain must be known. Based on the coconut timber response towards load, it can be determined its flexure behaviour which consists of deformation, moment, curvature, stiffness and the failure mode. By an experiment it was obtained that the coconut timber at 30 year of age have density (r15) = 0.52 g/cm3, modulus of elasticity (MOE) = 14478 MPa, tensile strength (str //)=31.01 MPa, compression strength (stk //)=18.80 MPa, shear strength (t//) = 10.15 MPa and bending strength (MOR) = 48.96 MPa. The maximum tensile strain is 0.0021 and compressing maximum strain is 0.0108. In this case L/d ³14 represented to determinant the flexure bending failure of coconut timber beam

Abstract

The objective of this study was to evaluate the antitermitic activities of young teak wood through wood extracts and wood blocks samples method. Correlation between extractive content and its antitermitic properties was also studied. The disc samples from the bottom part of the five 8 years old and four 22 years old trees were sawn and samples from outer sapwood, inner sapwood, outer heartwood, and inner heartwood were prepared. Extractive contents were determined through secluded cold extraction of the wood meal using n-hexane, ethyl acetate (EtOAc) and methanol (MeOH). Force-feeding method using Reticultermes speratus Kolbe termites was used for termite resistance test. A significant interaction between tree age and radial direction factors existed with regards to the n-hexane and EtOAc extractive content. The tree age factor did not affect the mass loss levels in the extract samples. The most susceptible to termites was the sapwood of the 8 years old trees. The n-hexane and ethyl acetate extracts of the inner and outer heartwood significantly influenced the mortality rate, but in contrary to that of tree age. The EtOAc extracts of the outer heartwood was the most active antitermite. The extractive content of heartwood did not correlate to antitermite properties.Key words: antitermitic activities, community forest, extractive, Reticultermes speratus, Tectona grandis

Abstract

Wood bent has been observed on three wood species from forest people plantation, i.e. Rasamala (Altingia excelsa Noronha), Java Tamarind (Tamarindus indica L.) and Marasi (Hymenaea courbaril L.), through steaming and soaking in 3% NaOH pre-treatment.The results showed that pre-treatment by soaking in 3% NaOH for 7 days continued by steaming for 30 minutes at temperature of 105 + 3ºC, could increase bent ability of each wood as follows: Rasamala 124%, Marasi 41% and Java Tamarind wood 13%, compared to bent ability of these woods with steaming treatment only. The Rasamala wood has bigger bent-radius or more difficult to be bent than the two others. Bending radius and increasing of wood bending of wood with high specific gravity is lower than wood with low the specific gravity

Abstract

People are less interest to the fast growing species since the quality is inferior compared to commercial wood. A research has been done to identify the physical and mechanical properties of samama wood (Antocephalus macrophylus (Roxb.)) from Mollucas island. Eight years old samama wood with diameter of 30 - 45 cm and height of 8 – 11 meter were used as samples. The parameters measured were moisture content (MC), specific gravity (SG), tangential and radial shrinkages, bending strength (MOR and MOE), tension and compression strengths parallel to grain and hardness. The result showed that the MC of samama wood decreased from bottom to upper and from outer to inner parts, while SG decreased from bottom to upper and from inner to outer part. Tangential and radial shrinkages of samama wood were much affected by vertical position. The MOE and MOR of samama wood decreased from bottom to upper part, while tension and compression strengths parallel to grain direction decreased form inner to outer part. On the other hand, hardness of samama wood decreased from bottom to upper and from inner to outer parts. Based on PKK NI5-1961 classification, samama wood belonged to strength class of III and IV.Key words: mechanical properties, Mollucas Island, physical properties, samama wood
