Abstract

Power electronic grid-connected inverters are widely applied as grid interface in renewable energy sources. This paper presents direct instantaneous power control of a three-phase three-level Neutral Point Clamped (NPC) grid-connected inverter in photovoltaic generation systems. The system consists of a PV array, DC/DC converter, three-level NPC LC filter and the grid. In order to achieve maximum power point  tracking (MPPT), an adaptive perturb and observe MPPT is used. For balancing the neutral point (NP) voltage, the control scheme through proportional integral (PI) control according to  the direction of the NP current based on redundant vector selection is used. Direct instantaneous power control is developed in a rotating synchronous dq reference frame with space vector modulation with improved operation performance study of the positive sequence detector (PSD) plus a synchronous a synchronous reference frame phase-locked loop (PLL) as the synchronization method. The performance of the proposed method is investigated by a grid-connected photovoltaic system with a nominal power of 12kW. The feasibility of the proposed method is verified through experimental results, showing good steady-state and dynamic performance.

Abstract

An accurate model of balanced and unbalanced three-phase Induction Motor (IM) under balanced and unbalanced supply conditions based on Winding Function Method (WFM) is presented in this work. In this paper, the unbalanced condition in three-phase IM is limited to stator winding open-phase fault. The analysis of presented models is shown in details which allow predicting the performance of 3-phase IM under different conditions. Computer simulations were obtained using the MATLAB software for a three-phase squirrel cage IM. MATLAB simulation results show that the oscillation of the speed and electromagnetic torque has increased considerably due to the open-phase fault in stator windings.

Abstract

In islanding operating mode of microgrid, the voltage and frequency of system must be maintained by the microgrid, or else the system will crumble due to the characteristics of different distributed generators (DG) utilized in microgrid. The voltage and frequency lost provision when main grid is disconnected. This paper presents PI controller based voltage controller to regulate voltage to its normal condition. The controller is proposed to be utilized individually with each distributed generator (DG) in microgrid. The controller compares inverter output voltage with voltage at point of common coupling (PCC) and its output is feed to PWM pulse generator to generate appropriate pulses for inverter to regulate voltage to its nominal value. The simulation results of proposed system are shown using MATLAB/Simulink platform.

Abstract

This paper proposes a new stochastic metaheuristic optimization algorithm which is based on kinematics of projectile motion and called projectile-target search (PTS) algorithm. The PTS algorithm employs the envelope of projectile trajectory to find the target in the search space. It has 2 types of control parameters. The first type is set to give the possibility of the algorithm to accelerate convergence process, while the other type is set to enhance the possibility to generate new better projectiles for searching process. However, both are responsible to find better fitness values in the search space. In order to perform its capability to deal with global optimum problems, the PTS algorithm is evaluated on six well-known benchmarks and their shifted functions with 100 dimensions. Optimization results have demonstrated that the PTS algoritm offers very good performances and it is very competitive compared to other metaheuristic algorithms

Abstract

In the last few years, High Altitude Platforms (HAPs) have attracted considerable effort due to their ability to exploit the advantages of satellite and terrestrial-based systems. Rain attenuation is the most dominant atmospheric impairment, especially at such frequency band. This paper addresses the modelling of rain attenuation and describes a propagation channel model for HAPs at Ka-band to provide efficient and robust wireless access for tropical regions. The attenuation due to rain is modeled based on three years measured data for Johor Bahru to estimate the actual effect of rain on signals at Ka band. The radio propagation channel is usually characterized as a random multipath channel. Specifically, a statistical derivation of probability distribution function for Rayleigh and Rician fading channels are presented. The model consists of multiple path scattering effects, time dispersion, and Doppler shifts acting on the HAPs communication link. Simulation results represent the fading signal level variations. Results show perfect agreement between simulation and theoretical, thereby conforming to the multipath structures. The information obtained will be useful to system engineers for HAPs link budget analysis in order to obtain the required fade margin for optimal system performance in tropical regions.

Abstract

Wireless communication systems have advanced significantly in the past years and played an extremely important role in our society. It is rapidly becoming the most popular solution to deliver voice and data services due to flexibility and mobility that can be offered at moderate infrastructure costs. It is foreseen that future wireless communication system will experience an enormous increase in traffic due to increased number of users as well as new high bit rate data services (multimedia) being introduced. The increase in channel capacity and high transmission rates for wireless communications requires technologies for power saving and efficient frequency usability. One of the most promising techniques to achieve this is the Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) system. This paper proposed a combined spatial multiplexing MIMO scheme with beamforming for high data rate wireless communication. The proposed transmission scheme combines the benefits of both techniques and the system was able to transmit parallel data streams as well as provide beamforming gain. Actually, these diverse techniques, share the same requirement of multiple antenna elements, but differ in the antenna element spacing necessary for the different schemes to work. Thus, smart antenna array was proposed as a possible solution and was adopted at both the transmitter and receiver. The proposed hybrid technique improved the system spectral efficiency performance significantly than the conventional MIMO, spatial multiplexing and beamforming techniques when used alone under the same simulation environment.DOI:http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijece.v4i5.6450
