Abstract

Cell counting is a required procedure in biomedical experiments and drug testing. Manual cell counting performed with a hemocytometer is time consuming and individual dependence. This study reportedthe development of a computer-assisted program for trypan blue stained-cell counting using digital image analysis. Images of trypan blue-stained breast cancer cells line were obtained by a microscope with a digital camera. Undesired noise and debris were removed by applying a guided image filter. Color space HSV (Hue, Saturation and Value)conversion and grayscale conversion were performed for distinguishing between live and dead cells.  Image thresholding and morphological operators were applied for image segmentation. Live and dead cells were counted after image segmentation and the results were compared with manual counting by three well-experienced counters. The computer-assisted cell counting from thirty-six trypan blue-stained microscopic images had a high correlation coefficient with the live cell results of the experts (r=0.99). The correlation coefficient of the number of dead cells comparing the computer-assisted count and the experts’ count was 0.74. Our approach offers high accuracy (>85%)on counting live cells compared with the experts’ counting. This automated cell counting approach can assist biomedical researchers for both live and dead cells counting.

Abstract

When severe voltage sags occur in weak power systems associated with grid-connected wind farms employing doubly fed induction generators, voltage instability occurs which may lead to forced disconnection of wind turbine. Shunt flexible AC transmission system devices like static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) may be harnessed to provide voltage support by dynamic injection of reactive power. In this work, the STATCOM provided voltage compensation at the point of common coupling in five test cases, namely, simultaneous occurrence of step change (drop) in wind speed and dip in grid voltage, single line to ground, line to line, double line to ground faults and sudden increment in load by more than a thousand times. Three techniques were employed to control the STATCOM, namely, fuzzy logic, particle swarm optimization and a combination of both. A performance comparison was made among the three soft computing techniques used to control the STATCOM on the basis of the amount of voltage compensation offered at the point of common coupling. The simulations were done with the help of SimPowerSystems available with MATLAB / SIMULINK and the results validated that the STATCOM controlled by all the three techniques offered voltage compensation in all the cases considered.

Abstract

In this paper, an appropriate control strategy is proposed to handle the nonlinear dynamics ofan active magnetic bearing (AMB). The goal of the control design is to drive the AMB rotor to the origin with improved transient response. In order to achieve this task, back stepping control technique with a barrier Lyapunov function are employed to keep the tracking error trajectory inside a predefined zone to avoid possible mechanical contact between rotor and stator. Besides, a speed observer is also used since information about rotor speed is not always available. The stability of the closed-loop system is proven. The effectiveness of the proposed control strategy is verified by numerical simulations.

Abstract

Frequency oscillator is one of the basic devices that can be used in most electrical, electronics and communications circuits and systems. There are many types of oscillators depending on frequency range used in an application such as audio, radio and microwave. The needed was appeared to use high and very high frequencies to make the rapid development of advanced technology Colpitts oscillator is one of the most common types of oscillator, it can be used for radio frequency (RF), that its output signal is often utilized at the basic of a wireless communication system in most application. In this research, a Colpitts oscillator is comprised from a bipolar junction transistor (BJT) amplifier with LC tank. This design is carrying out with a known Barkhausen criterion for oscillation. Firstly, is carried out using theoretical calculation. The secondary is carried out using simulation (Multisim 13). All the obtained result from the above two approaches are 10 MHz and 9.745 MHz respectively. This result is seen to be very encouraging.

Abstract

This paper discusses economic load dispatch Problem is modeled with non-convex functions. These are problem are not solvable using a convex optimization techniques. So there is a need for using a heuristic method. Among such methods Teaching and Learning Based Optimization (TLBO) is a recently known algorithm and showed promising results. This paper utilized this algorithm to provide load dispatch solutions. Comparisons of this solution with other standard algorithms like Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Differential Evolution (DE) and Harmony Search Algorithm (HSA). This proposed algorithm is applied to solve the load dispatch problem for 6 unit and 10 unit test systems along with the other algorithms. This comparisional investigation explored various merits of TLBO with respect to PSO, DE, and HAS in the field economic load dispatch.

Abstract

The traditional white LED product established with a single chip and a single phosphor results in a low color rendering index (CRI). The upgrade of LED package is comprised of two chips and one phosphor material and gives the higher CRI while keeping high luminous efficiency. Based on previous findings, the research paper performs the application of the two chips and two phosphors to enhance the color tunability of LEDs with different amounts and intensities of the two employed phosphors. Additionally, a color design model is built to serve the purpose of bettering the color fine-tuning of the white-light LED module. The maximum value of the difference between the measured CIE 1931 color coordinates and that of the simulated model is approximately 0.0063 around the 6600 K correlated color temperature (CCT). From the results, this study offers a quick approach to achieve the color fine tuning of a white-light LED module with a high CRI and luminous efficiency.

Abstract

Mobility management protocols are very essential in the new research area of Internet of Things (IoT) as the static attributes of nodes are no longer dominant in the current environment. Proxy MIPv6 (PMIPv6) protocol is a network-based mobility management protocol, where the mobility process is relied on the network entities, named, Mobile Access Gateways (MAGs) and Local Mobility Anchor (LMA). PMIPv6 is considered as the most suitable mobility protocol for WSN as it relieves the sensor nodes from participating in the mobility signaling. However, in PMIPv6, a separate signaling is required for each mobile node (MN) registration, which may increase the network signaling overhead and lead to increase the total handoff latency. The bulk binding approaches were used to enhance the mobility signaling for MNs which are moving together from one MAG to another by exchanging a single bulk binding update message. However, in some cases there might be several MNs move at the same time but among different MAGs. In this paper, a bulk registration scheme based on the clustered sensor PMIPv6 architecture is proposed to reduce the mobility signaling cost by creating a single bulk message for all MNs attached to the cluster. Our mathematical results show that the proposed bulk scheme enhances the PMIPv6 performance by reducing the total handoff latency.

Abstract

A solar module can’t transfer maximum power to the load itself due to impedance mismatch. A maximum power point tracking (MPPT) system could be employed to have the maximum power.  A new MPPT system has been developed using Buck-Boost type DC-DC converter. The system is highly efficient and robust. PIC16F73 microcontroller has been used to control the DC-DC converter output. PV module output power is measured using microcontroller. The output power is compared with the previous module output power and the duty cycle of the converter is adjusted continuously to track MPP.  This process repeats until the output power reaches near to the maximum power point.In this paper, a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) system is developed using  two-switch non-inverting buck-boost converter. Abstract

Automatic face recognition has known a very important evolution in the last decade, due to its huge usage in the security systems. The most of facial recognition approaches use 2D image, but the problem is that this type of image is very sensible to the illumination and lighting changes. Another approach uses the 3D camera and stereo cameras as well, but it’s rarely used because it requires a relatively long processing duration. A new approach rise in this field, which is based on RGB-D images produced by Kinect, this type of cameras cost less and it can be used in any environment and under any circumstances. In this work we propose a new algorithm that combines the RGB image with Depth map which is less sensible to illumination changes. We got a recognition rate of 96, 63% in rank 2.

Abstract

Flooding is one of the most devastating natural disasters in the world. It occurs when water from heavy rains exceeds the capacity of the river banks into which it runs. Some roads are also being affected when this natural phenomenon happens which lead to closure of roads. This closure, however, are often dissiminated late to the people that are passing through the closed roads. For this purpose, a Road Flood Warning System with Information Dissemination via Social Media has been developed to provide timely flood alert information to the public. The system determines the depth of the water through an ultrasonic sensor and disseminates the data gathered to the Internet through the use of social media sites specifically Twitter and Facebook. Moreover, the system has a LED matrix and light emitting diode to display whether the roads are passable during the occurrence of floods. The test results on the performance of ultrasonic sensor showed an accuracy of 98.69% while dissemination of information was 90% successful.
