The whole object assumption (WOA) and mutual exclusivity (ME) assumption proposed by Markman (1990) are constraints children use in word learning. This small-scale psycholinguistic study investigates the constraints function in 14 preschoolers at ages 3 and 4 using WOA and ME in deciphering part labels. Using quasi-experimental method, children identified objects and animals. Findings show that while WOA is still used by the participants ME overrides. Further findings reveal no evidence of the claim that older participants used ME better than the younger ones. However, gender seems to play an important role in the participants’ performance for boys did much better than girls in the experiments. Thus, the result recommends further future research on the relation between the two constraints on word learning (WOA and ME) and age and gender. However, this study found two limitations: the drawings and the questions used in the study may fail to fully reveal the children’s ability since previous studies offer non-standard materials and procedure used in their experiments; and the study itself, is regarded as small-scale. Therefore, the research findings can hardly be generalized. Nevertheless, the research at least presents how the Cebuano speaking preschoolers learned new words via WOA and ME assumption.

This article addresses the frequently discussed notion of Chinese students’ supposed reticence and passivity in the English as a Foreign Language classroom. Using the concept of group dynamics as a starting point, it examines teachers’ classroom-management techniques in terms of promoting (or not promoting) active student participation. The study, using a grounded theory of research, analyzed classroom data obtained from class observations and from class filmings and supplemented these data with post-lesson interviews with the four involved teachers. Findings suggested that Chinese students were not necessarily reticent or passive but rather engaged actively when given a learning environment conducive to active engagement. The study pointed to three practical implications for classroom teachers: (1) promoting participation by working toward group cohesion, (2) promoting participation by providing effective teacher-student scaffolding and by providing opportunities for student-student scaffolding, (3) promoting participation by actively replacing textbook materials in order more effectively to offer students adequate support in terms of both language and affect. Acknowledging the fact that different institutional contexts may require different classroom-management techniques, the study calls for further testing of the present findings in other Chinese settings.

English as a global language is learned worldwide and a plethora of methods and approaches have been developed and practiced in English classrooms by dedicated teachers and students. Understanding the underlying theories of second and foreign language acquisition and learning will help both teachers and students in learning and teaching a target language. There has not been many research conducted in the area, especially within Indonesian context. This research therefore attempts to fill in gaps in a way that it provides sufficient discussion of the theories and practice in English Language Teaching (ELT) in Indonesia in its conjunction with the second and foreign language acquisition theories. Twenty eight students specializing in teacher training participated in the research and two distinguished data collection methods were utilized; survey and interview. The results show that the students are not consistent with their opinions concerning the theories of second or foreign language acquisition and learning in relation to the mastery of English as a foreign language in Indonesia. This research is aimed to find and to explain the implicit meaning in non-conventionally indirect request in Haikyuu!! (1st Season) anime and the reason the speaker request in non-conventionally indirect way which found in Haikyuu!! (1st Season) anime. This research is in descriptive qualitative research. The data were taken from Haikyuu!! (1st Season) anime, specifically, the dialogue from the Haikyuu!! (1st Season) anime that contains non-conventionally indirect request. The subject of the research is Haikyuu!! (1st Season) anime and the object is non-conventionally indirect request. In collecting the data, the researcher uses teknik catat or noting technique. In analyzing data, the researcher uses metode padan specifically in metode padan pragmatics. The analysis of the research shows that Haikyuu!! (1st Season) anime, from 25 episodes, has four forms of non-conventionally indirect request in Haikyuu!! (1st Season) anime, they are: imperatives, interrogatives, negative interrogatives, and declaratives.

Regarding the attractiveness of picture books, this study examined the impacts of teaching picture books on vocabulary learning of 40 Iranian elementary students. The participants were randomly assigned to two groups of 20; one experimental and one control. Then, their knowledge of vocabulary was assessed through administering a researcher-made vocabulary pre-test. After that, the researchers started to teach the experimental group through teaching picture-book of Starters Word List Picture Book. The words were taught to the students and they were required to match each word with its picture. The control group was instructed through their school textbook (Prospect One). The words were taught without their pictures; the words were read and simultaneously the students were wanted to repeat them and write their Persian equivalents. After the instruction ended, a vocabulary post-test was given to determine the effects of the treatment on the students’ vocabulary learning. The results of paired and independent samples t-tests indicated that the experimental group outperformed the control group on the post-test. It was also revealed that teaching through picture books resulted in better vocabulary learning.

This paper aims to answer “To what extent Medical Terms Translation can help in Facilitating Learning Process for Medical Students?” The researcher has adopted the quantitative method as well as the questionnaire as a tool for collecting data relevant to the study to bring to the light the importance of Medical Terms Translation in Facilitating Learning Process for students who study Medical Sciences. The sample of this study comprises (60) students. The marks obtained from the questionnaire were compared. From one hand, the results have revealed that the students encountered difficulties in understanding the Medical Terms. The result has shown that the questionnaire significance indicates that there is highly difference among students. Therefore, this indicates that Medical Terms Translation can play great role in Facilitating Learning Process for Students who study Medical Sciences.

The analysis of novel cannot be drawn away from its figures of speech. Figures of speech every author is different and that beauty of writing attracts reader’s interest. The following issue is about how this literary work can arrive closely to its original version when it is translated by two different gender of translator. Besides, translator may bring their own ideological gender background. Regarding to this issue, obviously, the quality of target text version is in a huge questioning. Further, this research used novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck and pays attention to find out figure of speech found in novel Of Mice and Men, the translation techniques choose in that novel, and the impact of translation techniques to translation quality from two different gender translators. The research method of this research was descriptive qualitative with collecting data, validating data, and analyzing data in order to get result. The source of data were novel Of Mice and Men (Tikus dan Manusia) translated by Pramoedya Ananta Toer and Ariyantri E. Tarman. Data collection was using purposive sampling. This result showed that there were eight figures of speech found in novel Of Mice and Men. In terms of their translation techniques, the most applied techniques by female translators were established equivalent and male translators were also established equivalent followed by creative discursive. In addition, the chosen techniques by female translator gave higher accuracy than male translator. Meanwhile the acceptability and readability were high from both translators. However, the result didn’t find any correlation between gender ideology and the chosen techniques. The chosen techniques were more likely influenced by the translator job background. The background of male translator as the famous novelist gave his strong ideology also transferred to his work as translator. Meanwhile, the female translator worked faithfully to source text.

This paper focuses on language use and discoursal strategies in an Islamic boys camp and draws from theoretical frameworks such as the ethnography of speaking, conversation analysis and discourse analysis as a means to examine the phenomena of religious mentoring and socialization. The article found that mentees were socialized through senior peers’ linguistic strategies such as language choice and code-switching and discoursal strategies such as humor, mock-demonstrations – all of which played a major role in building solidarity, group support and brotherly bonding.

The use of literature in language classroom has attracted language teachers to utilize it in the FL classroom. This paper is intended to decribe the students’ ability to write opinion essay by using flash fiction, Frank Stocton’s The Lady or the Tiger. The design used in the study was content analysis design in which the researcher collected the students’ composition after they were assigned to write opinion essay by using flash fiction. The subject of the study was 2013A batch of STKIP PGRI Pasuruan. The data were colected in 30 June 2015 and 7 July 2015. The result shows that students were able to make thesis statement that showed their opinion, but unable to develop the essay well, and state conclusion that reflect the essay. Moreover, two thirds of the students were not able to produce the essay in at least 250 words. The problems of the flash fiction used in the classroom and its limitation are discussed in the paper along with the suggestion for those who are interested to use literary work in FL classroom.
