Abstract

The emergence of discovery in science is always followed by two attitudes: (1) ethical, the development of science is accord with ethical values and benefit; and (2) free values, since its emergence, science is meant to develop itself. The former is promoted by pragmatism group viewing that science is not only to find the truth, but also benefit human life to solve many problems in their life. The latter, on the other hand, is promoted by puritan-elite group viewing that the aim of science is to find the truth and the objective explanation of everything. Therefore, science cannot submit to other authority out of itself. To bridge these two tendencies, the synthesis understanding of the context of discovery and the context of justification wherein the science emerges and develops is needed.

Abstract

Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) as a civil power has a strategic role to control and enforce the Human Right in Indonesia. To NU, Human Right is a seedling of basic right values living in the West, Islam and Indonesia. In the context of Indonesian Human right, five basic principles: hifz al-nafs (right to live), hifz al-din (right to believe), hifz al-nasl (right to produce children), hifz al-mal (right to have property), and hifz al-aql (right to have his or her mind be safe) are understood contextually according to the local wisdom, and it, sometime, is different from the orthodox concept of Sunni. NU views the Human Right movement in Indonesia as an oppositional movement to other side, especially the government that neglects values and human basic rights. It also means the movement not to preserve the tyranny regime, but as a progressive movement to manifest the citizens’ freedom to get their human right guaranty. The struggle to enforce the Human Right, to NU, is only to manifest more prosperous, fairer, and safer national life.

Abstract

Quran and Hadith have different historical side. This different implicates the differences of science development affiliated with them. One of them, that are very significant, is their link from the period of the prophet Mohammad to us. Quran as the first source of Islamic teaching –no doubt– comes to us by tasalsul or tawâtur (handed down from person to person for generations). Hadith, on the other hand, if it is examined carefully, has only little that is tawâtur, and most of them can be said as Hadith âhâd. In this paper, I will try to examine the epistemological side of Hadith. How to know its link from the Prophet to us? Certainly, a tool that is able to bridge and examine the problems around the first source or the Prophet period that is out of our coverage is needed. I give some suggestions to know it. Two of them are the isnâd or sanad system and the concept of tawâtur. The existence of sanad and its tawâtur, will, of course, clarify the position of the text or the source of Islamic teaching is really from the Prophet as a messenger.

To face this, Islam responds by the concept that Islam does not let the social class exist and avoid the centralization of properties only among the few rich people as it is in the capitalism. Islam issues different economic mode based on the Islamic teachings of need fulfillment, partnership, helping each other, and not based on struggling and conflict between social classes.
