Abstract

This paper is the result of a research conducted in 2016 that was back-grounded by several persecutions, intimidations, and violence towards Shi’i-related communities. Those persecutions, intimidations, and violence was based on many negative accusations that have been long addressed to them across the globe. The research is conducted within qualitative approach. The data collection includes techniques of Focused Group Discussion (FGD), observation, interview, and documentary study. The objective of this study is to describe the growth of the Shi’i community, the testimony that led them to convert to Shi’ism, as well as to describe their relations with other Muslim community. The research discovers the new real situation, that Shi’ism has developed quickly among educated people and students in Medan. They have formed and sponsored the foundation of many Shi’i religious circles (Majelis Taklim) in many regions (kabupaten kota) within the Province of North Sumatera, several circles in the Provinces of West Sumatera and Aceh. In addition, the relations of Shi’i community with other Muslim societies develop well. Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Nowadays, many Indonesian Moslems youth wielded social media, including instagram, not simply to express their piety or reach life goal, rather also for practical benefit just like marriage. This article focuses upon how they were stunned to gain bride or bridegroom through instagram. It tries to examine why they don’t choose merely their spouse over offline. I particularly discuss a single popular account regarding matchmaker taaruf_nikah (dating marriage) as deemed successful enough to arrange marriages amongst Indonesian Moslems. The account operationally provided service for its followers to post their picture after paying IDR100.000. Still, it opens an advertising services too and often posts pictures/videos portraying how proper Moslem is one who avoid dating and take an immediacy wedding because of god. Standing on thesis that instagram was the ultimate platform to shape public opinion, the article therefore argues that the main factor why it is triumph in taking many Indonesian Moslems youth’s heart lay onto its dissemination of anxieties amongst Moslem youth society through religion commodification notably in respect of who is the pious one and vice versa.

Abstract

The Indonesian government recognizes six official religions: Islam, Christianity, Catholicism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Confucianism, manifested in the way the government sets up public holidays based on important religious events. It also guarantees freedom of religious expression for different believers to behave according to what they believe, as stipulated in the article 29 of the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia. Government’s recognition upon three types of New Year event: Hijriya for Muslims, Saka for Hindu-Balinese, and Imlek for Chinese as annual holiday marks further the notion of religious pluralism in Indonesia. This paper focuses on the Ogoh-Ogoh ritual as an integral part of Nyepi (the day of seclusion) which since 1983 has been legalized by the Presidential Decree Number 3 as national holiday. The Hindu communities, living in Bali and Lombok, celebrate this annual ritual event as part of exhibiting their religious commitment andeffort of maintaining identity. The main issues elaborated here include firstly, on the dynamics of the Hindu-Balinese minority of Lombok in preserving their religious tradition amidst the majority of the Sasak Muslims. Secondly, the Sasak Muslims’ response toward the Ogoh-Ogoh display which has, to some extent, taken some of the most strategic public space of Mataram-capital city of NTB province, and influenced the surrounding social atmosphere. Thirdly, the way the minority Muslims in Bali deal with regional policy and regulation regarding to Nyepi. This discussion discloses the nature of relationship between Hindu-Balinese and Muslims in Bali, and between the Sasak Muslims and Hindu-Balinese in Lombok. It seems that a mutually partial tolerance between these groups are slightly developed by means of the Ogoh-Ogoh and Nyepi.

Abstract

Tourism has been a trend in the modern life of human in order to, among other purposes, be a medium to search healing. This could be caused by the assumption that modern treatment of healing for many people is expensive, therefore people look for cheap and affordable alternatives. A number of studies in tourism are still limited in social, economic, and cultural aspects. This research scrutinises the spirituality in the theological perspective of the people, especially the theological base of the healing searchers. Applying a fieldwork research, it is discovered that while soaking at the Banyu Panas, they spiritually expect to gain healing from any diseases. This is believed as prayer fulfilment, universality, and connectedness. The research discovers that the cultural tourism for spiritual therapy is still unified with other visitors of recreational objectives. In the future, there is a need to develop special space for therapy and be separated from other visitors of recreational objectives, hence it will create comfort and privacy. This way may expectedly enhance the visits of people to the touristic destination.

Abstract

The issue of gender inequality experienced by women is not something new. Women have long been treated unfairly and discriminatively in relation to their roles and positions. Similarly, in terms of duties and responsibilities as a wife who is required to bear children. This study aims to find out how the condition of Balinese women who are in overseas in the face of demands for childbearing sons. The method used is qualitative research with in-depth interviews (indepth interview) using the research question guide. The results show that women in the overseas (Konawe District) still face discrimination and are required to have offspring (sons). Therefore, the participation of religious and community leaders in eroding the gender injustice practices is needed.
