Abstract

This paper focuses on the structure and meaning of the existence of the Hyang Api Temple in Kelusa Village, Payangan District, Gianyar Regency, Bali Province. This temple is a place of worship (parahyangan) from Dewa Agni. From the structure, ritual form, and its function symbolizes the manifestation of Dewa Vishnu and Shiva. The problem raised in this paper is to find out how the structure of the Hyang Api Temple in Kelusa Village and what the meaning of ritual activities are carried out by Hindus in the Pura Hyang Api Village of Kelusa. Through this analysis it can show that there are indications of the existence of Kahyangan Tiga, Tri Murti. The Tri Murti concept in Bali can be seen in the form of a temple. The method used in this paper is the historical method, especially through the collection of historical facts, namely the collection of written data in the form of documents and monuments. Through this analysis, it is expected that the public can have a better understanding of the form and meaning of temples in Balinese society.

Abstract

Rakoetta S. Brahmana is a name that is still unfamiliar to some of the ears of North Sumatra people, especially for Indonesians in general. Rakoetta, as her comrade and family called her, was a Karo son who was born in the village of Limang, Tanah Karo on August 4, 1914. Rakoetta means glue in the Karo language. By giving that name, his parents hoped that Rakoetta would truly become the glue (unity) for the family and the wider community. This article is intended to re-record the struggle and dedication of Rakoetta as an exemplary figure for what is now known a “fighting” in the Indonesian politics, the Simultaneous Local Election. Rakoetta understood his sociological conditions and Karo culture well because of the influence of his parents. His knowledge of Karo culture became a strong capital in pursuing his political career during the independence struggle in North Sumatra, in addition to his formal education experience at HIS Kabanjahe and Medan Taman Siswa School between 1924 and 1930s. When in Medan, Rakoetta began to come into contact with ideas of nationalism. In Medan political organizations such as Budi Utomo, Sarekat Islam, the Indonesian Communist Party and the Indonesian National Party flourished. During the revolutionary period of independence he was actively involved as a member of Partindo, PNI, Boempa, BPI, BKR until he became regent of the revolutionary period. Rakoetta continued to serve as a Regent of Karo for two periods from 1946 to 1954, and again a Regent of Asahan concurrently Mayor of Tanjung Balai 1954-1960 and Mayor of Siantar 1960-1964. Rakoetta passed away in 1964. The story of Rakoetta’s life saves a bitter and full of ethos of struggle; consistent, resilient, tough, creative, clean and anti-corruption. There are many moral examples that should be emulated from a Rakoetta. The story of his struggle has never been written by anyone.

Abstract

This article analyses two main topics; the history of the origin and development of the kingdom of Makassar in south Sulawesi and the historiography of the South Sulawesi area and its literary tradition. This area is one of the regions in Indonesia that has a literary tradition which developed since the appearance of the lontaraq script as a medium for the record keeping of political and social life of the community. Various literary classics have been produced from this tradition, such as the La Galigo epic, various state and social regulations, genealogy tracts and personal journals. The history and culture of south Sulawesi has become of particular interests for researchers in Indonesia and abroad. The central focus of its historiography has been the glory days of the kingdom of Makassar in the 16-17 th century. The centuries after the fall was a period of minimal production of literary and historical works. Its literary tradition made a resurgence in the post-colonial period but had sputtered out by the end of the 1960s. During the New Order period, the regime’s strong control has reduced the space for literary expression and resulted in stagnating literary production. Since the Reformasi period, efforts to rejuvenate the literary tradition of south Sulawesi has appeared.

Abstract

In the early twentith century, the Dutch colonial government launched a development program designated towards the modern Western world in the Dutch East Indies. This is due to the penetration of capital from Europe. In this process, they embraced the natives as part of the new world. The colonial authority used certain knowledge discourse systems that worked in various modern colonial institutions, such as offices, schools, religious institutions, mining, transportation, factories. In other words, the natives who originally had different knowledge from the colonists were subtly made to follow the logic of the colonial authorities. This paper will show various representations in the film Moeder Dao de Schildpadgelijkende, about how the practice of Western colonialism discourse in the Dutch East Indies during trying to internalization their knowledge system into the Indigenous knowledge system.Discourse is a disciplinary technology through the practice of certain knowledge to create docile bodies through a certain normalization process. In this process, a person acts treated in such a way is to enter into the system of knowledge pressed by the authorities. The indigenous body becomes the working locus of colonialism’s power and knowledge. A docile body exists a form of certain norms and rules in society. In this knowledge building, the logic of the colonial language as a tool for the formation of indigenous identities. The tangibility of inferiority created in the naratives arose from the perspective of the colonial rulers towards natives living in Western standards. Although the native people could meet Western standards, under the discourse of colonialism, it was still a subject that had to follow the colonial power itself.
