Abstract

The historical narrative of the Indonesian women’s movement is solely about the congressional activities and their results without giving explanation on the meaning and historical context of the movement. This can be seen from the discourse of Indonesian women’s movement during the revolutionary period, which generally centered on four main points, i.e. women’s mobilization in the Red Cross, women paramilitary troops, public kitchen, as well as organizational change and its congress. As an alternative, in this article I examine the first five months of Perwari (the Women Association of Republic Indonesia), its dynamic and historical context. The research finds out that differences of ideologies, perceptions, and expectations about the Indonesian revolution influenced the direction of women’s movement, triggering internal conflict that eventually destroyed them.

Abstract

This research discusses the existence of charity shows in Yogyakarta as one of the people’s efforts to support the financial needs of independence struggle bodies. As the capital of the revolution, Yogyakarta’s atmosphere was filled with patriotic spirit to defend independence, and its society supported the birth of struggle organizations. To finance their activities, people conducted fundraising activities, such as by organizing charity shows. This method was chosen because of its effectiveness in mobilizing charity-fund from society, since at the same time they also enjoyed entertainment. The shows were presented in the form of theater and cinema. From these charity shows, the collected funds were distributed to various independence struggle bodies such as People’s Militia, Independence Funds Agency, and the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI).

Abstract

This article discusses corruption actions committed by the officials of the People’s Food Supervision (PMR - Pengawasan Makanan Rakyat), a government body assigned to collect rice donations from the population in Central Java during the revolution period. Those officials swindled and took a certain portion of the collected rice for personal use, while originally it was supposed to be distributed to the fighters and starving people. Rice collecting is one of Indonesia’s government endeavors to obtain the needed funds to sustain the revolution. The practice was actually a continuation of the one introduced during the Japanese Colonial Period. The collected rice was used as a logistics supply for fighters in the front. Part of it was also shared with people in need. To collect the rice efficiently, the government pointed out several boards, including PMR. Unfortunately, The PMR officials who were responsible for the task on behalf of the Republican government corrupted the rice.

Abstract

This article discusses the figures who were involved in the smuggling of illegal trades carried out by the Republican Government during the revolutionary period of 1945-1949 in Singapore. Illegal trade is one of the Republican Government’s efforts to fill the void of state treasury after the imposition of an economic blockade by the Dutch Government during the revolutionary period. The economic blockade, especially on Sumatra, closed the flow of international trades entering Indonesia. Through this illegal trade, the Republican Government succeeded in filling the void in the state treasury and in providing financial support during the 1945-1949 revolution. However, the process of this illegal trade was carried out with great obstacles and challenges by several figures who made major contributions. Several figures known to have played an important role in this action include Ali Djajengprawira, Utoyo Ramelan, Zairin Zain, Suryono Darusman, R.E. Bajened, Dr. Samad, Joe Loh, Tan Chi Ku, and the last one is Djumbang Roesad.

Abstract

This research discusses about the role PMI (Indonesian Red Cross) and NERKAI (Nederlandsche Roode Kruis afdeeling Indonesië) in Java during Indonesian Independence War 1945-1949. As one of the most important institutions in wartime, the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI and NERKAI) was in a dilemmatic position. They had to obey the state for which they served, but on the other hand, they had to adhere to the fundamental principle of the International Red Cross. These dual functions have to be carried by the two Red Cross organizations, led them to abandon their neutrality. This study was designed to explain the reason why the two Red Cross organizations involved in the Indonesian Independence War abandoning their neutrality principle. This research found out, at least, four factors influenced the partiality actions of the Red Cross, first, the special status of the Red Cross in wartime; second, the unclear definitions of “Red Cross independent”; third, sentiment of the Indonesian nationalism; and fourth, the presence of militarism in the Red Cross.

Abstract

As a national hero, the biography of General Sudirman has been extensively written. Like other biographical works, most of Sudirman’s biographies are concluded with his death. However, as a grand figure, Sudirman’s departure left empty spaces that prompted people to commemorate him. The commemorations did not only serve melancholic but rather pragmatic purposes. Shortly after he passed away in 1950, the Indonesian army began to narrate Sudirman’s death as a method to unite the divided officer corps. Although Sudirman was a Japanese-trained officer, he managed to maintain peaceful relations between Indonesian officers who received training under the Dutch (KNIL) and the Japanese (PETA) military. Although he has passed away, the army remained to utilize his “post-mortem” influence to mediate the peaked conflict between two factions. “Bringing Sudirman into alive” successfully ended the KNIL-PETA friction but was unable to prevent the follow-up conflict. Sukarno and Suharto also utilized Sudirman’s name to pursue their respective political interests. Sukarno positioned Sudirman as the champion of nationalism under the framework of Nationalism-Religion-and Communism or Nasakom ideology. For Suharto, Sudirman’s fame was useful to alter the influence of Sukarno, his archrival. This article combines a biographical approach with obituary writing. The present study accessed newspapers, magazines, and radio news as primary sources and complemented it with secondary literature.
