Abstract

This paper presents a design and development of 8/6 switched reluctance motor for small electric vehicle using analytical method. The absent of permanent magnet, inherent fault tolerance capabilities, simple and robust construction make this motor become more attractive for small electric vehicle application such as electric scooter and go-kart. The switched reluctance motor is modelled using analytical formula in designing process. Later, the designed model is analyzed using ANSYS RMxprt software. In order to achieve 5kW power rating and to match with the design requirement, the switched reluctance motor model has been analyzed using RMxprt tools for the preliminary parameters design process. This tools is able to predict the output performance of motor in term of speed, flux linkage characteristic, output torque and efficiency.

Abstract

This paper presents the dynamic analysis of the high-power factor three-phase ac to dc converter using current injection hybrid resonant technique in order to investigate the characteristics of the output voltage, line current, DC-link voltage and the resonant current of the proposed converter. The dynamic analysis have been developed based on a separate analysis of the rectifier line-frequency operation and at the resonant circuit high-frequency. Converter circuit analysis have been performed based on the operation at the fundamental frequency. The power balance relation method has been included in order to match the line frequency equation with the high frequency resonant stage equation. This analysis can be envisaged to be the heart of the small-signal model to design the output voltage regulation and maintain a high-power factor input line current of the proposed converter.

Abstract

Within the photovoltaic (PV) power-generation market, the  PV module has shown obvious growth. However, a high voltage gain converter is essential for the module’s grid connection through a dc–ac inverter. This paper proposes a converter that employs a floating active switch to isolate energy from the PV panel when the ac module is OFF; this particular design protects installers and users from electrical hazards. Without extreme duty ratios and the numerous turns-ratios of a coupled inductor, this converter achieves a high step-up voltage-conversion ratio; the leakage inductor energy of the coupled inductor is efficiently recycled to the load. These features explain the module’s high-efficiency performance. The detailed operating principles and steady-state analyses of continuous, discontinuous, and boundary conduction modes are described. A 15V input voltage, 200V output voltage, and 100W output power prototype circuit of the proposed converter has been implemented; its maximum efficiency is up to 95.3% and full-load efficiency is 92.3%.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijpeds.v3i1.1585

Abstract

This paper presents an extension work on the application of interconnection and damping assignment passivity-based controller (IDA-PBC) from the conventional H-bridge inverter to a 5-level Cascaded H-bridge Multilevel Inverter (CHMI). With the controller, the inductor current and the voltage capacitor track the desired reference of the inverter to ensure that the output voltage maintains its regulation while the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) is kept at low levels with fast transient response. It is designed based on the Port-Control Hamiltonian theory exploiting the dissipation properties of the averaged model of inverter circuits.  The results obtained have proven that the IDA-PBC previously developed for the H-bridge inverter can be easily extended and applied to the CHMI circuit. The simulation results showed that the IDA-PBC is able to maintain the output voltage regulation in both circuits in the case of no-load to full-load condition, load uncertainty, and structural uncertainty while maintaining THD of less than 5%. However, in all cases, CHMI has shown better performance in terms of THD percentage and transient response compared to the H-bridge inverter, which are 290 µs and 150 µs respectively.

Abstract

This paper presents the modeling and real-time simulation of an induction motor. The RT- LAB simulation software enables the parallel simulation of power drives and electric circuits on clusters of a PC running QNX or RT- Linux operating systems at sample time below 10 µs. Using standard Simulink models including SimPowerSystems models, RT-LAB build computation and communication tasks are necessary to make parallel simulation of electrical systems. The code generated by the Real-Time Workshop of RT- LAB is linked to the OP5600 digital real-time simulator. A case study example of real-time simulation of an induction motor system is presented. This paper discusses methods to overcome the challenges of real-time simulation of an induction motor system synchronizing with a real-time clock.

Abstract

In this paper, a comparative performance analysis of bridgeless boost and bridgeless buck converter for Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) is presented. The performance of UPS application in terms of their efficiency is compared between the conventional diode bridge converter and both bridgeless converters. The input supply power quality is also been analysed by applying open and closed loop control techniques to the converter. The results show that the efficiency and the input supply quality of the bridgeless converters are significantly improved. UPS using bridgeless boost converter has better performance in all aspect compared to bridgeless buck converter. Aligned with that, the closed loop controller for the converter has also improved the efficiency and PF more than the open loop controller in performing the UPS system. All the analytical work was performed using PSIM software.

Abstract

Induction heating application uses uniquely high frequency series resonant inverter for achieving high conversion efficiency. The proposed work focus on improving the practical constraints in requiring the cooling arrangements necessary for switching devices used in resonant inverter due to higher switching and conduction losses. By introducing high frequency Multi- MOSFET based series resonant inverter for the application of induction heating with the following merits such as minimum switching and conduction losses using low voltage grade  of automotive MOSFET’s and higher conversion efficiency with high frequency operation. By adding series combination of low voltage ratedMulti MOSFET switches, temperature variation according to the on-state resistance issues can be avoided by sharing the voltage across the switches depends on number switches connected in the bridge circuit without comprising existing system performance parameter such as THD, power factor, output power. Simulation results also presents to verify that the proposed system achieve higher converter efficiency.

Abstract

In the deregulating electricity market, many private sector power producers are participating actively. With growing number of the wind mills and solar power generation, the reactive power production will be more because of induction generator and inductive type load. Many blackouts have happened in the past decades due to more reactive power which lead to a decrease in the magnitude of real power. It is very essential to compensate the reactive power, increase the real power flow in the transmission line, increase the transmission efficiency, improve the system stability and be in a safer place to save the fossil fuels for the future. In this paper the importance of reactive power and its various compensation techniques are applied to a five bus deregulated test case modeled and analyzed. The simulations were done using Matlab Simulink, for various FACT controllers such as STATCOM, SVC, SSSC and UPFC compensation and the results were tabulated and compared.

Abstract

A combination of battery and ultracapacitor as a hybrid energy storage system (HESS) of an electric vehicle (EV) can result in better acceleration performance, reduce battery charge-discharge cycle and longer driving range. This paper presents a new converter design combining triple-half-bridge (THB) and buck-boost half-bridge (BHB) converters in a battery-ultracapacitor HESS. The BHB converter is used to compensate the voltage variation of the ultracapacitor. A power management system is proposed to control the power of battery and ultracapacitor to supply the demanded power. This paper describes the operation of the proposed converter using a simplified ∆-type primary-referred equivalent circuit. This paper also shows the simulation results verifying the dynamic response of the proposed power management system for the proposed HESS.

Abstract

This paper presents modular multilevel converter (MMC) with circulating current control which provides an improved balanced capacitors voltages. The control is achieved by employing compensation techniques in the external and internal controls of the MMC based static compensator (STATCOM). Performance variations arise during STATCOM non-ideal operation with grid externally and during capacitors voltage transients due to charging and discharging within the MMC that result in the emergence of a voltage disturbance. The proportional integral (PI) controller is usually employed in the external and internal controls for a fast response and reactive current control. In this paper, the performance of the PI controller is improved using voltage compensation in the external control and virtual impedance in the capacitor voltage control within a five-level MMC. The proposed control minimizes the variations in the STATCOM operations with the grid and within the MMC to provide an enhanced overall system response.
