Abstract

Flight liberalization in South East Asia Region has long been initated and implemented since 2015 under the name of ASEAN Open Sky Policy. The implementation of this policy which is aimed to give a full access to the flight companies in ASEAN countries triggers a debate. There are pros and cons about it. Through this research, the writer intends to analyse cost and benefit of the implementation of that policy to the ASEAN countries. The focus of the analysis is on the impact of ASEAN Open Sky Policy to the countries in the region where the policy contributes to the ASEAN Economic Community. This research uses liberal institutional approach. The method is literature studi. Data processing technique uses single SWOT analytic concept. The result shows that the effect of ASEAN Open Sky is more beneficial to Singapore and Malaysia rather than to Indonesia and the Philippines.

Abstract

The conduct of traditional public diplomacy was merely concerned on the engagement of state actors. Not to mention, diplomatic communication is only occurred between the government officials by intention to earned political changes in targeted countries. Recently, public diplomacy is mainly focused on the positive reputation building in the other country and is conducted through political and economic cooperation among two countries or more, by involving the non-state actors also. Starting from its economic reforms initiative, China is engaged in international trade and successfully became one of global economic powers. By its rapid raise, China is feared to be a national threat to other countries, be it politically, economically, or even for the national security. Even more, the Western media often portrays China’s image in a negative light. Hence, in improving its global image, China expands its global outreach by establishing cooperation with the United States film industry, Hollywood, that strengthen by the 2012’s Memorandum of Understanding upon film industry, also by implementing Chinese censorship policy, where negative portrayals of China is prohibited. The conduct of censorship itself would be supervised under state-ruled agency, the SAPPRFT, and is supported by the involvement of Chinese multinational companies investors. Through this research study, the effort of China’s public diplomacy on the utilization of Hollywood as the United States film industry would be proven through new public diplomacy theory. Further, the role of multinational corporations will be assessed due to its essential contribution in enhancing Chinese censorship in Hollywood films for its global release.

Abstract

This article discusses how the scientific diplomacy efforts undertaken by the German Epistemic Community in promoting Colombian development. The Epistemic Community is the liaison between the two countries in the hope of being able to contribute to a country's policy through science in dealing with various local and global issues and can also contribute to the development of Colombia. By using descriptive qualitative research methods along with the concept of epistemic community and scientific diplomacy, this study produced findings that the Science Diplomacy carried out by the German Epistemic Community in promoting development in Colombia manifested itself in the form of efforts to improve academic collaboration, support the implementation of academic activities within government agencies, and continue recommendations for the development of various aspects of science in the research sector related to development policy.

Abstract

Empowerment derived from the word ‘power’. Therefore, the main idea of empowerment in contact with the concept of power. Meanwhile, the authority itself is often attributed with the ability to make other people do what we want, regardless of their wishes and interests. Empowerment refers to the ability of the people, especially the weak and vulnerable groups so that they have the ability in some respects. This in turn makes the praxis of empowerment of communities on the territory of the literacy movement. The inclusion of community empowerment on the literacy movement to make the movement experienced a transformation from the previous only general movement based on issues that are more specific, one that is in the Pondok Sinau Lentera Anak Nusantara as setting research. The purpose of this research is to know the realization community empowerment-based literacy movement and the impact of socio-economic change in the surrounding communities. By using the theory of community empowerment and literacy theory and qualitative descriptive method, it can be noted that there is a relationship between the empowerment of community-based literacy movement toward socio-economic changes in the surrounding communities. The background and the focus of community empowerment-based literacy movement in Pondok Sinau Lentera Anak Nusantara is as follows: (1) the existence of empowerment-based literacy movement in Pondok Sinau Lentera Anak Nusantara the answer to the problems of social-historical territory of the village; (2) the realization of the empowerment funded based on the principle of volunteerism and independence; (3) the main focus of the activities of empowerment is the transformation of the values of the characters building for the productive age group as well as encourage socio-economic independence based on a series of soft skill thematic activities.

Abstract

The background of this research is to find out how non-Javanese students at the University of Muhammadiyah Magelang overcame the obstacles of intercultural communication that had been experienced during college. The purpose of this research is to describe and analyze perceptions, adaptation processes, and how to establish intercultural communication relationships non-Javanese students. While the research method uses qualitative methods with a case study approach. The results showed that the non-Javanese students at first considered the language of Javanese as a complicated, foreign language, even ridiculous. However, over time non-Javanese students assessed the Javanese communication as unique, polite, refined in a slow and more careful and multilevel tone. The process of adaptation starts from the awareness of the importance of adapting, followed by learning, and finally learning by practicing. In developing a thigh intercultural communication relations, it prioritizes positive thinking, observing the language and nature of Javanese people first so that they can adjust their style of communication with the Javanese without leaving the identity that they are not Javanese and increase the intensity of intercultural communication.

Abstract

This article describes the impacts given by depression as mental health disorder and suicidal behavior towards Japan’s economy and social productivity. Depression and suicide have become one of the main causes of mortality among other health conditions in Japan. Both depression and suicidal behavior are non-communicable, yet both can influence psychological states of other people near the patient. Depression and suicidal behavior are challenging for countries with high mortality caused by suicide, especially towards those who also have ageing population like Japan. Hence, this article will analyze further costs faced by Japan along with reviewing policies taken to overcome their mental health challenges. This study uses qualitative descriptive design with case study method. This study also uses secondary analysis to answer mentioned challenges. Result shows that Japan faces economic loss to sustain their mental health expenses and psychological expenses for the family left by the victims of depression and suicide, as suicide trend is popular among adults and youths in Japan. Depression and suicidal behavior can also affect individual’s productivity. The authors expect that this can be used to give broader knowledge on non-traditional contemporary global issues.

Abstract

Woman had been neglected from the political affairs in the early of post-independent era. It raised the concerns of women activists on political participation. They realized Timorese women had played a significant role in fighting for independence along with male veterans. Caucus Feto Iha Politika appears as the prominent NGO in Timor-Leste that promoting gender equality in politics. It resulted the rising of women’s representation in Timor-Leste Parliament significantly. Moreover, its woman participation in parliament achieves the highest percentage in the Asia Pacific. This research lies on the question of how does the role of Caucus Feto Iha Politika in increasing women’s representation in parliament of Timor-Leste. The data obtained from primary and secondary sources by conducting the in-depth interview and library research. In order to answer the research question, the authors reiterated the three main components of NGOs roles –implementer, catalyst, and partner by Lewis as the analytical framework. The authors humbly concluded that for increasing the number of women MPs, Caucus Feto Iha Politika played two prominent roles, as follows: 1) catalyst, by advocating the policy change of women-friendly legislative quota policy to the Government of Timor-Leste, and 2) partner, by working closely with the related stakeholders to increase the capacity of potential female candidates and elected women MPs through capacity building.

Abstract

ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) regulates the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) in its relation with their economic activities. It was stipulated in the ASEAN Framework Agreement on Intellectual Property Cooperation in 1995. As the ASEAN member states are also the member of World Trade Organization (WTO), the principles of AEC have to be in harmony with the WTO principles. This paper analyzes the compliance of ASEAN IPR laws with the principles of Trade Related to Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPs) of WTO. Second, this paper analyzes the enforcement of those regulations in the member states, finding out whether there is implementation in the region that is different with the international principles or not. It is a part of qualitative research that used secondary data to complete the explanative analysis. Classical liberalism and self-reference criterion becomes theoretical framework of analysis. Classical liberalism promotes laissez-faire economics and private property in the means of production. Meanwhile, self-reference criterion refers to an unconscious reference to one’s own culture, values, knowledge, and experience as a basis for decisions. The result reveals that the ASEAN IPR regulations have different specific and special nature with the TRIPs, affected by the characteristics of the nations.

Abstract

In Indonesia there are already many popular local products market their products using social media, which one is in the fashion field, namely local t-shirts. The IDN Times article mentions there are 10 highly recommended local brands namely Erigo, Oomaoo, Sans, Monstore, Thanksinsomnia, Kamengski, Yogs, Sunday Sunday Co., Thinkcookcook, and Dreambirds Artwear. Erigo Store get first ranked with the number of Instagram followers 376.000 in September 2018 so Erigo Store as a local brand already has fans among the people of Indonesia. Seeing this phenomenon, it can be seen that brands have a very important role. To build the Erigo brand into a brand that can be trusted by the public, a strategy is needed to strengthen a brand, which one is through endorsement. To find out the effect of using Celebrity endorser on brand image, this research focus on examining Erigo. Purpose of this study to find the influence of celebrity endorser Arief Muhammad on Instagram Erigo brand image and how much affected partially. Method in this study is quantitative with type descriptive and causal research. Sampling technique using non-probability sampling method of purposive sampling, with respondents 100 people. Data analysis technique is descriptive analysis, classic assumption test, simple linear regression analysis, coefficient determination and hypothesis testing. The results of the t-test found the celebrity endorser had influence on the brand image. This is evidenced by thitung (9,918)> ttable (1,661). Based on result determination coefficient, celebrity endorser Arief Muhammad had an influence of 50.1% on the Erigo brand image.

Abstract

Donald Trump is the 45th President of the United States who was sworn in on January 20, 2017. Donald Trump's victory shook the global political order because a number of his statements and political policies were very controversial. A number of controversial Trump policies include the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, the closeness of relations with Vladimir Putin, to protectionist policies that get resistance from within and outside the country. The author uses the legitimacy theory in this study to see the political impact of the policies taken by Trump. The results of this study see that Donald Trump's policy controversy has an impact on the crisis of political legitimacy which results in the threat of US political supremacy in the global political arena.
