Abstract

Interlanguage Pragmatics examines how people with different first languages and cultural backgrounds use a common language system during social interactions. This research aimed to examine apology strategies employed by native speakers of Indonesia and Indonesian learners of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). A total of 40 people took part in the study, 20 native speakers of Indonesia and 20 learners of Indonesian as a foreign language (EFL). The study utilized a Discourse Completion Test (DCT) consisting of 6 different situations. The data were analyzed using the Banikalef (2015) methodology, which was obtained from the Olshtain and Cohen (1983) framework. The data demonstrate that they employ different strategies when offering apologies. Some of these strategies are IFID, explanation of account, acknowledgement of responsibility, offer of repairs, denial of responsibility, and concern for the hearer. It analyses the correlation between the utilization of politeness in social factors, such as power and social distance. Furthermore, gender differences cannot be overlooked.

Abstract

This research analyzed the implementation of Kurikulum in the learning process of English subjects at SMA Negeri 1 Palembayan. This research is focused on the implementation of Kurikulum Merdeka in the differentiated learning process in English subjects at SMA Negeri 1 Palembayan. The design of this research is descriptive research. Indicators of this research were devided into three categories based on Tomlinson (2001), three important aspect of student learning needs in differentiated learning are readiness to learn, interest in learning and student learning profile. The data were collected by using interview. The participants of this reserach were English teachers at SMA Negeri 1 Palembayan. The result of this research showed that the implementation of the Kurikulum Merdeka in the first year at SMA Negeri 1 Palembayan was quite good. Teachers use a variety of media, guidance that suits students' learning styles and different assignments according to students' abilities. This method is applied to meet student needs in three categories, namely readiness to learn, interest in learning and student learning profile. From the results of this research, it can be concluded that the implementation of the Kurikulum Merdeka in the differentiated learning process in English subjects at SMA Negeri 1 Palembayan is quite good in meeting students' needs for readiness to learn, interest in learning and student learning profile.Keywords: Kurikulum Merdeka, differentiated learning.

Abstract

Grammar is one of the basics of a language and must be mastered by English students to master English language skills. One of the causes that influence students' grammar mastery is the teacher's teaching style. This research intends to determine the significant relationship between the teaching style of English teachers and students' grammar mastery at SMA Pertiwi 1 Padang. This research used quantitative research with a correlational design. This research involved 80 students of grade 11 and grade 12 of SMA Pertiwi 1 Padang. The instrument of this research was a grammar test and a questionnaire. Based on the questionnaire result, the English teachers used a formal authority style with mean scores of 17.18 and 17.38. Based on the data analysis for the grammar test, it was found that the mean score of students from 11th grade was 34.1, while the mean score of students from 12th grade was 48.1. The researcher found a very high correlation between English teachers' teaching styles and students' grammar mastery. It is proven by rxy (0.995) greater than rtable (0.220). In conclusion, there is a correlation exists between English teachers' teaching styles and students' grammar mastery.

Abstract

A workbook is one of the most desirable instructional items that can help learners quickly grasp their lessons in a certain subject on their own. A student workbook is an educational tool that includes components that help students learn and ensure knowledge and ability in accordance with the goals outlined in teaching plans. Yet, the workbook used needs some aspect to be maintained or improved according to students view. This descriptive-quantitative research was conducted to five indicator of the workbook based on Cunningsworth criteria of a proper book; approach, skills, topics, practical consideration and organization.  The sample was 121 students from both education and non-education program of English Department. These samples were asked about their opinion towards the workbook used in EP class and then they were given questionnaire adapting 28 statements on the perception indicators of the workbook. The collected data were analysed by using descriptive statistical calculation. It was found that the students have positive perception from those indicators of their workbook used in EP class.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the K-W-L-A strategy on students' reading comprehension at Man 4 Agam. It is a quasi-experimental study. A test was utilized as a tool by researchers to collect data. There were 30 questions, however 3 of them were found to be invalid following the validity and reliability tests. The researcher corrected the invalid questions so they could be used again. Eleventh-grade student social studies at MAN 4 Agam took part in this research. There are 40 students consisting of two classes. The control group is eleventh-grade social 1. This class consists of 20 students. The experimental group is eleventh grade social 2 which consists of 20 students. Paired sample t-test research results, the K-W-L-A strategy significantly improved the reading comprehension abilities of the students. With a significance value smaller than 0.05, namely 0.000. This shows that pupils' reading comprehension skills can be considerably improved by effectively implementing the K-W-L-A approach.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine students’ perceptions on using vocabulary journal for mastering vocabulary. There were five aspects investigated, namely the attractiveness, effectiveness, relevance, perceived motivation, and vocabulary aspects. The participants were 65 students of grade XII at Science Program SMAN 12 Padang to whom a questionnaire was given. The data of this research were analyzed using descriptive quantitative method. The results from questionnaire revealed that students had relatively positive perceptions on the use of vocabulary journal for mastering vocabulary. This is shown by the average mean of the questionnaire responses, it was 3.03 out of 4.00. Thus, the findings show that the majority of the students viewed that learning new vocabulary using vocabulary journal was fun and could help them retain the new vocabulary they have learned. Students thought that vocabulary journal is so appropriate to be used in English class and motivated them in learning new words. Most of the students also felt that vocabulary journal helps them in comprehending the use of a certain words and spell the words correctly. It can be inferred that the use of vocabulary journal for vocabulary learning is attractive, effective, relevance, perceived motivation, and promote all the vocabulary aspects.

Abstract

This research is aimed to find out the eighth-grade students’ difficulties in using quantifiers and  to find out the factors that cause the students’ difficulties. This research used a mixed-method research design. The instruments of this research are multiple-choice test and  interview. In this research there were 25 students at the eight one class students and also the English teacher of SMP Angkasa Lanud Padang as the  sample. The techniques of collecting the data were test with 40 questions and interview with 6 questions. The findings of the research show that all students are categorized as failing. There are three difficulties faced by the students; difficulty remembering and using the quantifier appropriately, difficulty in understanding the countable and uncountable noun word, difficulty remembering the vocabularies. There are some factors that cause the students’ difficulties in using quantifiers were classified into two categories. First, the cause of students’ difficulties related to the learning process, are two factors; the teacher explained the material too quickly and sometimes the teacher's method of teaching was boring. Second, the factors that cause students’ difficulties related to students, there are three factors; lack of vocabularies, lack of motivation, carelessness. This research is expected useful for the English language teaching and learning process at SMP Angkasa Lanud Padang.

Abstract

This correlational study investigates the correlation between eleventh-grade students' vocabulary mastery and speaking skills at SMAN 1 Kec Payakumbuh. The primary objectives include evaluating vocabulary and speaking skill levels and determining their relationship. This research aims to enhance practical and theoretical aspects of speaking activities. The researcher employed a quantitative method using Pearson’s correlation to measure the relationship between two variables: students' vocabulary mastery (independent variable, X) and their speaking ability (dependent variable, Y). The study population includes all 11th graders at SMAN 1 Kec Payakumbuh for the academic year 2021/2022, totalling 160 students. A sample of 31 students from class XI IPA 3 was selected. Tests for speaking ability and vocabulary mastery were conducted to assess the relationship between the variables. The findings of this study demonstrated a connection — one that was validated by statistical examination of the data — between the students'' vocabulary knowledge and their ability to communicate verbally. It was revealed that there is a substantial association between the vocabulary knowledge of students in the eleventh grade at SMA N 1 Kec Payakumbuh and their speaking ability. The research reveals a positive correlation, indicating that improved vocabulary is linked to better speaking abilities. Statistical analysis supports this, with a significant p-value below 0.05, validating the hypothesis.

Abstract

Speaking is one of the challenging skills for students to master because they must use the skill whenever they interact in an English setting. Speaking has always been regarded as one of the most essential skill to master in the history of English language teaching and learning. The aimed of this research was to investigate the advantages and disadvantages of online – offline learning in speaking for formal interaction class of English Education Study Program in Universitas Negeri Padang and to describe what the students think of offline and online learning (students’ engagement). This research employed a descriptive qualitative study. The respondents of this research were  85 students which were Class 3, 4 and 5 at third semester English Education Study Program in UNP who become the sample of this research. This study used open and closed-ended questionnaire. This research found that there were 5 advantages of offline and 5 advantages of online learning then also there were 4 disadvantages of offline and 5 disadvantages of online learning based on the students’ preference. Mostly the students have good engagement while learning speaking in offline  rather than  in online class. The students have big eager to participate speaking class in offline learning rather than online. They said that in offline class, they always actively participate, whether responding to the lecturer's questions or making presentations in class. Mostly the students answered it was easy or not too difficult to complete the task while studying speaking in offline learning. And also the students feel excitement and challenging while studying speaking in offline class rather than online.

Abstract

This study aims to find the gender differences of vocabulary size of bilingual classroom’s students in SMP Islam Raudhatul Jannah Payakumbuh. This study used quantitative approach with descriptive-comparative design. The participants of this study were 94 students of bilingual class in SMP Islam Raudhatul Jannah Payakumbuh. The samples were chosen using purposive sampling. The data were collected using New Vocabulary Levels Test to measure the students’ vocabulary size. It was found that the vocabulary size of male students grade 7th, 8th and 9th were 2518.93 words, 3371.21 words, and 3381.94 words. While female students’ vocabulary size fore grade 7th, 8th, and 9th were 2468.25 words, 2898.80 words, and 3842.59 words. There were no statistical significant differences found between the mean vocabulary size of male and female students grade 7th and 8th. The significant difference was found in vocabulary size difference of male and female students’ in grade 9th. It can be concluded that the vocabulary size of male and female students’ were different and increased along with their educational level. The significant difference of vocabulary size between male and female students was only found in grade 9th where female students possessed a bigger number of vocabulary size compared male students.
