Abstract

This research aimed to find out the specific types of collaborative learning strategies teachers used when teaching reading comprehension at SMPN 2 Sungai Penuh and challenges that teachers faced when teaching reading comprehension by using collaborative learning strategies. It is a descriptive qualitative study. Observation and interviews were utilized as instruments by the researcher to collect data. Teachers who teach in grade eight and students in grade eight at SMPN 2 Sungai Penuh took part in this research. There are 35 students consisting of seven classes. This research does not require any special treatment during the teaching and learning process. Based on analyzing data, the researcher found that collaborative learning strategies that teachers used in teaching reading comprehension were group discussion, think-pair-share, partner reading, shared reading, collaborative strategic reading, and jigsaw reading. There are many challenges that teachers faced when implementing collaborative learning strategies in teaching reading comprehension. They are, students do not have their own awareness of the assignments that have been given, many students have low abilities in reading skills, such as pronunciation and vocabulary, many students do not understand vocabulary, and misunderstand the meaning of text, such as adjectives, nouns, verbs, and adverbs, and limited time in teaching reading comprehension.

Abstract

This study aimed to figure out how English Language and Literature Department lecturers’ perspectives on the use of chat GPT (Generative Pre-training Transformer) in English writing classes. This research used a qualitative descriptive design. The participants in the study were eight English Language and Literature Department lecturers who have taught and currently teaching in writing classes and have found student assignments that use AI or chat GPT. The data were collected using open-ended questionnaires and interviews. The findings showed that English Language and Literature Department lecturers’ have a positive perspective on the use of chat GPT in writing class. Besides that, the data revealed some students still often misused the chat GPT to complete writing tasks. Related to this, lecturers apply strategies to detect student assignments that use AI assistance or Chat GPT by using Turnitin application and checking the students writing pattern. Therefore, educators or lecturers are strongly advised to be able to develop their potential in following the era of technological development by utilizing various applications that can detect student assignments using AI assistance or chat GPT and the like.

Abstract

This study aimed to figure out Teachers’ Behavioral and Situational Readiness on teaching English in elementary school. This research used a Qualitative research method with a case study approach. The participants in the study were twelve classroom elementary schools' teachers whose were instructed to teach English, especially in grades one, two, four, and five. The data were collected using semi- structured interviews. The findings showed that The teachers’ behavioral readiness depends on their educational background were not ready to teach English in elementary school because there were no teachers who had English educational background. Moreover depending on their pedagogical skill all the teachers were ready to teach. However, they need more improvement to the content knowledge in teaching English. The teachers’ situational readiness depends on providing facilities and tools are ready to teach English in elementary schools. However, there is only one school which had sufficient library, others schools still do not have sufficient libraries, especially in 3T schools which means are rural, underdeveloped, frontier areas and lack in provide complete books.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the correlation between students' self-efficacy and English-speaking skills at Advanced Speaking. This research was a correlational design. The population of this research is the English Literature Department 2022 Universitas Negeri Padang from NK2-NK5, and the sample is the NK 2 class which was chosen by using cluster random sampling. The instruments of this research were a Self-efficacy questionnaire and a speaking test, and the data were analyzed using SPSS 25 for Windows. The data were analyzed using the Spearman Rank test. It was found that the sig. (2 tailed) 0.454 higher than sig. 0.05. As a matter of fact, the null hypothesis was accepted. Therefore, the results of this research showed that there was no correlation between self-efficacy and students’ speaking skills in Advanced Speaking classes.

Abstract

The aimed of the research was to find out how the Hamburger Essay Strategy affected the essay-writing skills of SMP Negeri 24 Padang students. A pre-experimental design with a single group pre- and post-test was employed in this research. Eight classes of eighth-grade students from SMP Negeri 24 Padang made up the population. Purposive sampling was used to choose the sample. The members of the sample were VIII.A. Thirty students were present. Writing essays was the method used to gather the data. The findings of the research showed that implementing of the Hamburger essay strategy positively affected on students’ ability to do essays, with a mean of 31.80 on the pre-test and a mean of 41.77  on the post-test. They were more confident in writing based on the situation given. In conclusionthe research's conclusions and results must improve the essay writer's skills. Students' essay-writing skills are significantly improved by the Hamburger essay strategy.

Abstract

This study investigates the level of motivation of eleventh grade students at SMAN 3 Payakumbuh in learning English. It also aims to identify what students need in order to increase their motivation. As motivation plays an important role in language learning, fostering desire and enthusiasm for the subject is crucial. This study used a survey method, a quantitative research type. A questionnaire with a five-point Likert scale was used to measure students' motivation. The study involved 101 eleventh grade students selected through total sampling. The results showed an average intrinsic motivation score of 3.16, which was categorized as moderate. Similarly, the mean extrinsic motivation score was 2.67, also indicating a moderate level. Based on the overall score of 2.91 and the Likert scale interpretation, showed moderate to low levels of motivation overall. To address this, this study explored potential students' needs to increase motivation. The results shows that the most preferred approach (with an average score of 3.23 of students choosing it) involved teachers incorporating various learning media such as songs, movies and English learning apps.

Abstract

This research aims to know the students’ perception on use of the PC game: “Big City Adventure Sydney Australia” at MAN 2 Bukittinggi English Club Extra-curricular to improve vocabulary mastery. Vocabulary is essential in a language. Since learning vocabulary is the main point for learning other skills in a language. There is no doubt that vocabulary mastery plays an important role in the four language skills. Students can master English vocabulary in various interesting ways. One way is to use games as an attractive learning tool. Students can play the “Big City Adventure Sydney Australia” game to improve vocabulary mastery when they take part in extracurricular activities, namely English Club. English Club is the place for students to improve their English ability outside of regular classes. There are several benefits to join English Club at the school. One of them, mastering vocabulary in interesting way by playing game. English Club students play “Big City Adventure Sydney Australia” game to help them for mastering vocabulary. Descriptive research with quantitative method was used to assess the data in this research. Total sampling was used by the researcher to choose the sample of this study. The sample consisted of 93 English Club students. The questionnaire was used as the research instrument of this study. The finding showed that the students had positive perception on PC game: “Big City Adventure Sydney Australia” to improve vocabulary mastery the English Club students. It was represented by the total mean of the questionnaire (3.25). The results of this research showed that “Big City Adventure Sydney Australia” game helps the English Club students to improve their vocabulary mastery in the school extracurricular.

Abstract

PPG (Teacher Professional Education) is a program aimed at preparing and producing qualified teachers. This program is designed to prepare teachers to become qualified teachers. This study investigates how lecturers perceive a teaching certification program for in-service English teachers focused on the implementation of deepening material through online self-study, lesson planning, and teaching practicum. This study's participants were eight lecturers who taught PPG Daljab in 2021 at Universitas Negeri Padang. The type of research used in this study is qualitative research. Data were gathered using open and closed questionnaires distributed via Google-form. This study's findings on deepening material through online self-study received positive feedback, with challenges and recommendations highlighted. Positive agreement is evident in the development of lesson plans, with some areas requiring attention and improvement. Although the teaching practicum received positive feedback, there are some issues that must be addressed. Overall, the study provides insight into teacher certification programs' in-service effectiveness, challenges, and enhancement suggestions.

Abstract

This study investigates the perceptions of 12th-grade students at SMKN 2 Tebo regarding the teaching methods used by their English teachers for mastering cause-and-effect sentences. Additionally, it explores the extent to which these methods contribute to students' improvement in identifying, interpreting, and using cause-and-effect sentences. The research employs a qualitative approach, specifically descriptive analysis, to analyze data collected through questionnaires and observations. The data analysis reveals that students perceive the teacher's teaching methods as lacking variety and engagement, leading to boredom and hindering their understanding of cause-and-effect sentences. Additionally, the study identifies a lack of motivation among students to learn more about cause-and-effect sentences. Based on the findings, the study concludes that the teacher's teaching methods need significant improvement to effectively engage students and enhance their understanding of cause-and-effect sentences. The study recommends incorporating more diverse and interactive teaching strategies to motivate students and improve their learning outcomes.

Abstract

Reading comprehension ability is the crucial and a fundamental skill for academic success. This study aimed to find out the reading comprehension ability and to investigate the factors that contribute to variations of reading comprehension ability of the students of Geography Education Department international class. This research is a descriptive mixed-method research. The data were collected from 28 international class students of Geography education department of Universitas Negeri Padang. The instrument of this research was reading comprehension test which is TOEFL reading test and interview. The result shows that the students have an insufficient reading comprehension ability in reading English text, and there are some factors that contributed to the insufficient of reading comprehension ability of the students such as, home environment, socioeconomic status, prior academic experience and motivation. As the result, the reading comprehension ability were 57% failed, 36% inadequate, and 7% adequate. Furthermore, for the factors that contribute to their reading comprehension ability which are from the total of 28 students, 19 students said that they don’t have supportive home environment in developed reading habits, 11 students said that their socioeconomic status are not appropriate enough, 20 students claimed the lack of prior academic experience and 19 student confess that they are not enjoy reading or less motivation in read. The findings suggest some program that needed to be improve in the international class program of Geography education department to provide more efficient and creative reading activities for the student to developed their reading interest and reading habits.
