Journal of English Language Teaching is a journal published by English Language Teaching Study Program of FBS Universitas Negeri Padang. Abstract

This research was purposed to find out the correlation between students’ reading aloud activity in the classroom and their pronunciation. This research was correlational research. A total of 30 students of the nineth grade students in SMPN 1 Tanjung Baru were chosen using random sampling. Questionnaire and pronunciation test were used as the instruments to collect the data. The questionnaire was made up 20 close-ended questions related to reading aloud activity in the classroom while the test was a pronunciation test that the students had to read a text given by the researcher. According to the result of this research, the correlation coefficient is 1.000 which is higher than 0.05. It means that in SMPN 1 Tanjung Baru, there is no correlation between students’ reading aloud activity in the classroom and their pronunciation. According to further interview with the students as the sample of this research, the researcher found that the students did not feel that reading aloud activity in the classroom help them in their vocabulary, confidence, motivation, fluency, and reading comprehension since reading aloud activity was not applied well in the classroom. Even though the result of this research which was conducted in SMPN 1 Tanjung Baru is that there is no correlation between the two variables, this research was not purposed to generalize that the result of the research will be the same if it is conducted in other schools.

Abstract

This study investigated the perceptions of English Department students at Universitas Negeri Padang about Kampung Inggris Pare in improving their speaking skills and the benefits of studying there. A total of 22 students from the 2017-2023 batch participated in the study. Descriptive research with a quantitative approach was used to analyze the data. The research instrument was a questionnaire. The findings revealed that the students have a very positive perception of Kampung Inggris Pare's effectiveness in improving their speaking skills. This is reflected in the questionnaire's overall mean score of 3.61. The results of the study also showed that the English learning environment and methods in Kampung Inggris Pare helped students improve their speaking skills, develop their speaking skills in various aspects, and enhance their overall speaking skills. In other words, the study found that Kampung Inggris Pare is an effective place for English Department students at Universitas Negeri Padang to improve their speaking skills. This is due to the positive learning environment and effective teaching methods used there.

Padang: English Language and Literature Department. Faculty of  Languages and Arts. Universitas Negeri Padang. Social media such as Twitter have been popular among people as a alternative Media for Learning English. There is now a feature on Twitter called auto base that can be used to learn English. Twitter @englishfess_ is an account that uses the auto base feature, which allows any Twitter user to send messages anonymously via direct message containing questions or information about English. This study aims to know and describe Followers' perception on the use of Twitter Auto-base @englishfess_ for vocabulary mastery. The participants of this study were followers of @englishfess_ totaling 10 followers filled out questionnaires and interviews. In determining the participants, the researcher used purposive sampling technique. This study used a descriptive method with a qualitative approach. In collecting data, the researcher used questionnaires and interviews. Based on the results of this study, it was found that followers have a positive perception of using @englishfess_ to improve vocabulary. @englishfess_ shared various contents about English which can leads followers to add their vocabulary.  Learning English on @englishfess_ is fun and less stressfull because is easy to access, varied Menfess vocabulary content, easy to understand, free and many others. As a result, @englishfess_ can be an interesting media for a follower who want to master their vocabulary and is a friendly account for followers who just want to learn English.

Abstract

Speaking skill is not easy for many people, especially students. Some of the difficulties experienced by students are related to speaking skills which are included in the aspects of speaking English. Digital learning media is one kind of learning media that is often used today because it is easy to use and can increase student interest in learning. This research aims to analyze the speaking skill of junior high school students, especially at ninth grade of SMPN 11 Pekanbaru and to find out the effectiveness of Cake Application on the improvement students speaking skill. The focus on the study at ninth grade of junior high school because they still have difficulity in speaking even though they already get adequate English material that is learned from the seventh grade. The method of the study was using pre-experimental research with one-group pretest-posttest design. The findings of data analyzed showed that the mean score of speaking skill students (47.35) was included in the poor level category according to Harris (1996) while after giving the treatment ,the mean score posttest increases (69.35) which can be classified into the good level category. In conclusion, it means that the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected, while the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. Thus, Cake Application is effective to improve students’ speaking skill.

Abstract

This study examines the type of discourse markers based on Fang and Carter theory (2007) in the teachers’ talk and the reason why teachers used dominant discourse markers at SMK N 3 Teluk Kuantan. The research  design  of this study is descriptive qualitative. The data is collected though observation, recording and interview. The subjects of this research are two English teachers at SMK N 3 Teluk Kuantan. The result showed that there were four type discourse markers used by teachers, namely, interpersonal, referential, structural and cognitive. Interpersonal markers were the dominant posed  by teachers in the teaching and learning process which was 60,00%, 22,31% referential, 15,94% structural and 1,73% cognitive. The teachers used dominant markers for providing students with effective instruction and guidance especially for taking student’s attention, increasing their confidence in the classroom interaction, as fillers also highlight the key of conversation and measuring students’ understanding. Keywords:Discourse markers, teacher’s   talk, classroom interaction

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out what strategies the students use in employing translation and what are they beliefs  about the use of translation in learning English. The subject of this research was students of class K6 from the academic year 2022 at Universitas Negeri Padang. This research was conducted using quantitative methods, using a questionnaire adapted from Ahmad Muzdalifah (2016) as an instrument of data collection. The result of this research shows that the students believe in the use of translation help them with the English skills such as reading, writing, speaking and use strategies for using translation in learning English for reading and speaking. According to the findings, students positively believe in the use of translation as a strategy made extensive use of it when they were studying in their learning process.

Abstract

This research aimed to the perception of the students in essay writing class about peer feedback in english department of UNP. The study focuses on student perceptions, the role of peer feedback, and a comprehensive literature review on writing skills. Employing a quantitative methodology, data on students' perceptions of peer feedback in writing classes were collected through a questionnaire based on Farrah (2012). Using descriptive quantitative methods, the findings reveal that participants possess a positive perception of peer feedback's contribution to the enhancement of critical thinking, writing abilities, creativity, motivation, and the creation of a relaxed learning environment. The research suggests that peer feedback serves as a valuable tool in fostering the improvement of writing abilities among undergraduates

Abstract

This study is a descriptive study aimed at investigating project-based learning teaching modules compiled by English teachers as well as their problems in compiling them in the senior high school in Lembah Gumanti on the Merdeka curriculum. A total of six English teachers at senior high school in Lembah Gumanti were chosen as the participants. Qualitative analysis was used to describe the analysis of the teaching modulus compiled by an English teacher. The data from the interview was transcribed, classified, and concluded. The results of the qualitative analysis showed that the design of the project-based learning teaching module by three English teachers in Lembah Gumanti was quite appropriate. Three teachers are able quite capable to write project-based learning teaching modules by writing their entire syntax according to their characteristics. The results of the interviews showed that the other three teachers who do not use a project-based learning module faced some problems in compiling the project-based learning teaching modules on the Merdeka curriculum, the teachers are not familiar with stages the project-based learning and have difficulty determining the project topic as well as its activities in the classroom. It was concluded that the teachers need training in designing the specialized project-based learning teaching module so that they will be better for the design of teaching module based on the Merdeka curriculum

Abstract

This reserach aimed to find out students’ errors in using language features in wrting a personal recount text. This research employed a descriptive research. The resercher adapted the theory of language features form Gerot and Wignell (1994), Barwick (1998), and Derewianka & Jones (2016). The paericipants were 42 eighth-grade students of SMPN 5 Padang Panjang. According to the research findings, the errors made by the students in using language features from the three language features; specific participants, simple past tense and adverbial phrases and connectives were the absence of specific pronoouns and verbs, the incorrect use, form and order, the addition of another verbs.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to know students’ ability and students’ difficulties in identifying transitivity system. The population of this research was all English Language Education Program of UNP in academic year 2021, while the sample of this research was K2 Class which consisted of 22 students. This research used descriptive with quantitative method and included two instruments: transitivity test and questionnaire. The transitivity test was used to know the students’ ability in identifying transitivity system while questionnaire was used to know students’ difficulties faced by them. The mean of student’ ability in identifying transitivity system was poor with score 47.72. In addition, students’ difficulties in identifying transitivity encountered that there were several significant challenges. The most difficulties that faced by the students were relational identifying process, mental process and verbal process. Difficulties in relational identifying process was difficulty in determining “role” “identity” or “meaning” with 86.3%. Difficulties in mental process were difficulty in determining verbs of feeling, thinking, and perceiving with 81.8%. Additionally, in verbal process, students had limited understanding of the function of Target with 77.2%.
