Abstract

The importance of English is the reason to develop international class in the university. To make sure the use of English efficiently the right approach needs to be done. The approach known as Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) involves learning academic subjects using a foreign language. This method has shown great potential in higher education, as it helps enhances students' analytical and reasoning skills. This article explores the perceptions of international class students in Universitas Negeri Padang on benefit and challenge in implementing CLIL approach. This study aimed to find the students’ perception of the benefits and the challenges in implementing CLIL approach in international class at Universitas Negeri Padang. The study collected data from students through close-ended and open-ended questionnaire using a descriptive quantitative method. The participant of this study were 83 international class students from 17 different program study in Universitas Negeri Padang. The findings showed that mostly the students have very positive perception that CLIL provides many benefits related to the 4Cs of CLIL. However, due to some language proficiency to understanding the target language and the subject at the same time, some students find this approach to be hard and challenging.

Abstract

This research aimed to know the type of code mixing, the dominant type of code mixing and reasons why the teachers used code mixing in the teaching learning process at SMPN 34 Padang. The research methodology that used in this research was descriptive qualitative method. The subjects of this research were English teacher at SMPN 34 Padang. This research used observation and interview in collecting the data. The result showed that there were three types of code mixing that used by English teacher in teaching learning process, namely intra sentential code mixing, intra lexical code mixing and involving change of pronunciation. Intra sentential code mixing was the dominant type that used by English teachers in teaching learning process, which is 104 utterances included intra sentential code mixing, 15 utterances included intra lexical and 11 utterances included involving change of pronunciation. While the reasons of the teachers used code mixing in teaching learning process were Repetition for clarification, Expressing affection, emotion, or attitude and Lack of proficiency or lexical gap.

Abstract

This study investigates the correlation between UNP's English department students' metacognitive self-regulation and their speaking ability. This research explores whether students who exhibit higher levels of metacognitive self- regulation demonstrate better speaking ability than those with lower skills. Theresearcher employed a quantitative method using Pearson's correlation to measure the relationship between two variables: students' metacognitive self-regulation (independent variable, X) and their speaking ability (dependent variable, Y). The study population includes four classes of public speaking. A sample of 30 students choose with simple random sampling from classes NK2-2022, NK3-2022, NK4-2022, and NK5-2022 were selected. Tests for speaking ability and a survey to see the students' metacognitive self-regulation were conducted to assess the relationship between the two variables. This study's findings demonstrated a correlation — one that was validated by statistical examination of the data — between students' metacognitive self-regulation and speaking ability. It was revealed that there is a substantial association between students' metacognitive self-regulation and speaking ability. Furthermore, the research shows a positive correlation, indicating that improved metacognitive self-regulation is linked to better speaking ability. Statistical analysis supports this, with a significant p- value of 0.008.

Abstract

Speaking is one of the language skills that students must master, even though it is not easy. Teacher must implement appropriate teaching strategies to overcome students’ speaking difficulties. This study aimed to find out the teachers' strategies in teaching speaking at MAN 2 Padang and the students’ perceptions of the strategies in teaching speaking. This research was descriptive research with a mixed approach that combines qualitative and quantitative data. The samples for this research were three English teachers and the students of three classes where the observations were carried out. The instrument were observation, interviews, and questionnaire. Observation and interview data were analyzed by activating data, making transcripts, and drawing conclusions. Quesinoer data was analyzed using Excel. The results of this research indicate that teacher A used live listening, drilling and chant, writing task, discussion, presentation, and outside-class speaking strategies. The students’ perceptions of Teacher A’s strategies were good with average perception results ≥76%. Teacher B uses recording and transcript, live listening, drilling, writing task, dialogue, role-play, and discussion strategies. The students’ perceptions of Teacher B’s strategies were quite good with average perception results ≤75%. Teacher C uses live listening, writing task, dialogue, role-play, discussion and debate, and presentation strategies. The students’ perceptions of Teacher C’s strategies were good with average perception results ≥76%. It can be concluded that the teachers at MAN 2 Padang use recording and transcript, live listening, drilling and chant, writing task, dialogue, role-play, discussion and debate, presentation, and outside-class speaking strategies in teaching speaking and students’ perceptions of the strategies were good.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to find out if the Cunningsworth theory is true and if the English Proficiency workbook can be used in the way it was meant to be used. This is what the descriptive quantitative method that uses equal random sampling does. A questionnaire was the main tool that the researcher used to properly gather the information they needed. Each participant had to pick one answer of eight different indicators. There was a total of 35 questions. One group of people who took part in the study was students in the English Department's English Proficiency course. Teachers and students who were interested in the subject were in this class. A study project is being worked on by 24 students and 5 teachers right now. 24 students crowded around the board where the discussion was taking place. Based on the results of the study, one could say that the workbook made did meet the requirements set by Cunningsworth. To be more specific, this is how things stand when it comes to meeting the needs of students, completing the program, and providing a wide range of learning materials.

Abstract

This research used quantitative research method with quasi-experimental research. Examining the potential impact of the Kahoot! Platform on students' ability to understand what they read was the primary goal of this research. Sport Senior High School eleventh graders made up the study's population. The population consist of 168 students who are classified into six classes. XI MIPA 2 was chosen using the cluster sampling method to serve as the experimental class. The eight meetings that this investigation was conducted over during school hours. For both the pre- and post-tests, the researcher used multiple-choice exams to collect data. The exam questions are drawn from hortatory exposition texts and narrative texts. A two-tailed independent sample t-test with a significance level of 0.000 (i.e., less than 0.05) was found in the results of the data analysis. To sum up, we accept (H1) and reject the null hypothesis (H0). Finally, our study demonstrated that the Kahoot! Platform improved students’ reading comprehension.

Abstract

Digital children’s literature is one of the media that can be used in learning as a way to improve EFL students vocabulary . The purpose of this study is to ascertain whether or not using the digital children’s literature help to improve the vocabulary at Universitas Negeri Padang . A collection of digital childrens literature stories from storybookscanada.comwas used in this experimental study .This study used quasi-experimental research and quntitative approach. The popuation was English languange education major students who enrolled in Introduction to Literature subject for the 2022/2023 academic year . The sample was two classes consisting 63 students from K3 and K7 which were selected using cluster random sampling . The information for the vocabulary test was acquired via pre-test and post-test of EFL college students’ vocabularies and consisting of 100 vocabularies taken from 14 selected stories on storybookscanada.com . A collection  of 14 stories completed with vocabulary exercises and vocabulary list was used as the reading daily treatment within 14 days. Based on the results, the experimental class’s vocabulary before treatment was 339,57 or 67,92 %  and students vocabulary after treatment was 379,42 or 75,88 %  . Conversely, with regard to  the control group , they did not experience much change in their pre-test and post-test results which were for vocabulary level from 356,97 or 71,39 %  to 361,71 or 72,34 %  . This research proves that employing digital children’s literature in the form of picture books on storybookscanada.comwith structural exercises has a significant effect on improving EFL college students’ vocabularies at UNP.

Abstract

This study aims to find out what students' perceptions of the use of wordwall as a learning media on vocabulary learning motivation. This study used descriptsive research design with quantitative descriptive approach. The research participants were 64 students of senior high school levels from two classes in the 2023/2024 academic year. The data were collected by using questionnaire base on ARCS theoretical motivation model. The findings showed that most of the students had very high motivation in using wordwall in English vocabulary learning concerning attention, confidence, satisfaction and relevance aspects. In addition, the findings revealed they feel enthusiastic and motivated by the use of wordwall which offers a variety of word games equipped with various features including audio, images, ranking scores, moving animations. Therefore, teachers are highly recommended to use learning media such as wordwall in the process of learning English vocabulary. In addition, it is suggested for students to be able to utilize wordwall to learn vocabulary autonomously while playing in and out of the classroom. Furthermore, future researchers may implement wordwall in various other language skills.

Abstract

This research was conducted to find out the level of students speaking competence of grade VIII MTsN Nurul Islam Islamic Boarding School, and the activities undertaken by students to hone their speaking competence. This descriptive research used a qualitative method. The participant consisted of 33 students of grade VIII Nurul Islam Islamic Boarding school. The research instrument are documentation and observation. The documentation used in this research is the score of students speaking examination. While the observation used for analyze the activities of the students. the study instrument comprises the documentation findings, were analyzed using SPSS 26 for Windows and Pearson Product Moments. Based on the research analysis, it was found that the level of students speaking competence is the good level with the mean score was 73.39. on the other hand, there are several speaking activities researcher assumed as support for students speaking competence of MTsN Nurul Islam Islamic Boarding School. In the classroom, teachers initiate discussions to foster active participation and critical thinking, engage students in question-and-answer sessions to reinforce learning, and organize group presentations on specific topics to encourage teamwork and public speaking. Additionally, communication games like "Two Truths and a Lie" are used to maintain interest and improve verbal fluency. Daily activities include bi-weekly public speaking sessions where students present memorized speeches, weekly conversation practices where students engage in dialogues based on provided texts, and regular vocabulary exercises where students learn and use new words in sentences, with periodic assessments to ensure retention.

Abstract

Writing has always been included in most difficult English language courses as one of the four language skills. Although writing skills especially in organizing idea is hard to master, but there are ways to support writing skills. One of them is joining a writing community. This research discovered non-English major students’ perception of the writing division of UKBA to organize idea in writing This research was quantitative design with the data collection technique using an online close-ended questionnaire. The respondents in this study were 30 non-English members of the writing division of UKBA. They were given 7 close-ended questions. The result showed that non-English major students have a positive perception with values integration showing 77,50% in the criteria ‘very high percentage’. Thus, the Writing division can be established by other universities to improve students’ writing skills. In addition, further research related to non-English members' perception toward other components of writing is suggested to do
