Abstract

Reflection has long been known as an important component for teacher professional development, and it has been widely researched. However, little is known about how teachers reflect on their teaching. Aiming at finding out how in-service English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers reflect on their teaching activities and how their self-reflection impacts their professionalism, the current study employs a qualitative case study as its research design. It involved six in-service EFL teachers at various levels of education, such as kindergarten, elementary, junior, and senior high schools, who were taking the postgraduate program in English Education at FKIP Universitas Tanjungpura as the research participants. The data for this study were obtained through questionnaires and interviews, as well as the written analysis of participants' teaching videos. After being analyzed qualitatively, the findings of this study indicate that most respondents reflect on their teaching activities at a very basic level. In relation to the impact of their reflective teaching on their professionalism, however, overall, respondents thought that their reflection activities helped them know their weaknesses and strengths in teaching, which encouraged them to become better teachers.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Writing is often regarded as a difficult skill to acquire by majority of EFL learners. Teaching writing is also unquestionably challenging. It is argued that an essential effort to assist learners is having them explore information to write through reading topic and genre- related sources extensively. This article seeks to explain the result of a study employing R&D method to develop a Reading-Based Model to teach academic writing. It will report the results of the needs analysis briefly and then explain the model itself. The data about the students' needs of writing according to the students and the writing lecturers were collected through questionnaire and interview. The results of needs analysis and relevant literature confirmed that reading prior and during writing is elemental. The syntax of the model was developed on the basis of literature dealing with the principles of reading-writing relations and the Genre-based Approach. It consists of 4 main stages. Some activities within each stage can be carried out online. The model has gone through a validation process by two experts (two experienced lecturers teaching writing skills). The model was considered valid by the experts; a few recommendations were concerned with additional activities.

Abstract

Teachers must equip students with several skills to face global competition in the 21st century. One of these skills is soft skills, one of which is social awareness. Ideally, teaching English to elementary school students should be child-friendly. Learning English in elementary schools trains students to communicate verbally using English in simple conversations and prepares students for social awareness. This study describes the stages in introducing Social Awareness through Total Physical Response (TPR) to teach English in Elementary Schools. This study used a qualitative approach, and the subjects of this study were the fourth grade, fifth, and sixth-grade students. The researchers collected the data by observing offline learning, interviews, and analyzing learning documents, such as textbooks, teaching media, etc. It was found that social awareness can be trained by selecting learning activities and suitable materials for young learners. The selected materials, such as daily activities, hobbies, and professions, give positive examples for the students. Learning activities such as working in-group groups/pairs and the material related to the current situation can improve students' social awareness, such as understanding the problem, empathy, and organization. It proves that TPR can be used to teach English and train the student's social awareness. Keywords:Social Awareness, TPR (Total Physical Response), English Learning

Abstract

The goal of this study is to describe the many types of lexical ambiguity and how they are used in student English textbooks. Ullman Stephen proposed the linguistic ambiguity theory. The essay combined qualitative research with a content analysis technique. The words with lexical ambiguity are the subjects of this study. The data is made up of words, and the source is an English textbook. Reading, comprehending, and coding the text book that contains lexical ambiguity is the procedure for gathering data. The data analysis technique is then organized, familiarized, and interpreted. The findings of the study revealed that the text book contained two types of lexical ambiguity, Polisemy and Homonymy. Lexical Ambiguity can be assumed to exist in everyword with several meanings. Keywords: semantic; lexical ambiguity; textbook
