Abstract

The language and cultural barriers in the multilingual population have risen in Japan and resulted in the importance of public service translators and interpreters. Understanding thepublic service translators and interpreters’ roles and perspectives in intercultural communication in Japan is interesting and important to be investigated to explore the emotional and psychological impact on their work. Despite several research on translating, interpreting, or intercultural communication do exist, however the public service translators and interpreters’ emotional and psychological impact on their work has generally not been much researched. Therefore, it is necessary and meaningful to study the perspective and role of the public service translator and interpreters in the context of translation and intercultural communication.This research is based on the longitudinal observation and interview with ten public service translators and interpreters in Yamaguchi City, Japan. It was found that their preferences toward their work and other psychological aspects such as willingness to communicate, anxiety, and empathy also influence their role and perspective.

Abstract

Teachers’ involvement in the process of education has a significant influence on the quality of educational outcomes.Teachers' performance in the teaching and learning process are expected to improve as teachers' welfare is improved. Improving teachers' welfare can then have a positive impact on improving teacher quality conceptually and in practice. As a result, teachers’ certification comes as the new spirit given from the government to improve teachers’ performance in the classroom. This study aims at investigating the impact of teachers' welfare enhancementon their learning performance in the classroom. This study employs descriptive qualitative research that describes the effect of teachers’ certification allowances on the improvement of teaching and learning quality in the classroom. The participants of this study are 30 teachers from the representative of MGMP teachers in Banjarbaru who have accepted teacher professional allowance. Moreover, questionnaire, interview, and observation are taken to collect the data.According to the findings, all certified teachers at the junior high, senior high, and vocational high school levels have already understood the meaning of pedagogical and professional competence that they use to deliver the material in the classroom; in general, teachers have well prepared the material. Teachers use teaching materials that are relevant to the syllabus and students' needs, allowing them to teach in accordance with Graduate Competency Standards (SKL). Certified English teachers also have already mastered the theories and principles of effective learning that are being taught in the classroom. In a nutshell, there is a correlation between certified English teachers' welfare and the improvement of classroom learning quality.

Abstract

This study intends to identify the categories of English vocabulary learning procedures that high school students most frequently employed. The idea of language learning techniques from Rebecca L. Oxford was used to analyze the use of English vocabulary acquisition strategies. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used in this study. For learners in vocational schools, the qualitative technique is utilized to describe vocabulary acquisition strategies. Data on the prevalence of various English vocabulary acquisition methodologies for high school pupils are presented using the quantitative method. The Class 11 of Hospitality Students academic year 2021 SMK Telenika Palembang served as the study's data sources, and the information was gathered from the answers to questionnaires that the students had completed. The analysis found that pupils frequently use memory to learn English vocabulary. Then, the social technique is the second most often used strategy among pupils. The third technique chosen by students is the cognitive one. The fourth strategy is Compensation, followed by the fifth strategy, Metacognitive. The affective approach is the one students employ most often when acquiring English vocabulary.

Abstract

This article reports the research on an experienced Indonesian teacher’s beliefs about feedback provision and her actual practices in an EFL writing classroom. Previous work has conducted analyses of teacher beliefs about feedback, but there is a scarce of research focusing on teacher beliefs and practices on feedback provision to experienced EFL teacher, especially in the Indonesian context. Therefore, this case study investigates an experiencdEFL teacher who taught advanced writing courses in one of the leading universities in Indonesia. The data used were qualitative. In order to gain the data, a preliminary interview, observation, and a retrospective interview were carried out, respectively. Samples of the students’ work were reviewed as a supplementary. The data analysis was done through data transcription, data reading, data data reduction and categorization, data comparison, data description and interpretation, and finally drawing conclusion. The findings show that the teacher believed that feedback was essential and, thus, she put herself as a major source of feedback for her students. Her beliefs influenced her practices to optimize her feedback provision, including her preferences in terms of modes, types, and sources of feedback. Her professional coursework and experiences played important roles in leading consistency between her beliefs and practices. For future teaching practices, it is suggested for teachers to equip themselves with adequate knowledge and skills, and to incorporate various methods to maximize their feedback provision. For future research, it is strongly recommended to use this reflective interview to help capture teacher beliefs behind their actual practices.

Abstract

The Government of Indonesia has made policy by implementing learning with online system through several online platforms since the pandemic covid_19 in 2020. The lecturers and the students of English Department of STKIP PGRI Jombang as unseperated parts of the higher education in Indonesia must realize this policy. Of the reasons, this research will employ qualitative reserach by adopting the theory of politeness and supported by the theory of critical classroom discourse analysis (CCDA), thus, it is aimed at investigating how power relation between the lecturer and the students of English Department of STKIP PGRI Jombang can maintain their good social relations. This research will be conducted to analyze the politeness strategy used by lecturer and students on online learning process. This research will explore what politeness strategy the lecturer apply to the students, what word choice the lecturer use in applying the politeness strategy toward the students and why the lecturer apply the politeness strategy to the students on online learning. The research, furthermore, will relate relate the examination of politeness and critical classroom discourse analysis to get true data analysis of the research. The findings showed that a lecturer maintains good manners to his students so that even though the position of a lecturer is higher, it is different from his students, which has a different role as a consequence. There were three stages of uncovering their power relations. The first stage, this research employed the lecturer’s dominant role to determine the construction of power to his students. It could be described in the analysis of the conversation related to the greetings in the initial of each meeting in online learning and the preparation of group discussion. The second stage, the researcher explored the solidarity expressed the lecturer to his students by employing his personal experiences and his expression of his sorry to hear when there was a student’s father was sick. Those two stages played important roles of exposing their relationship both equal and unequal. The lecturer exercised his power indicated that their social relations are unequal. On the contrary, the solidarity exposed by the lecturer to his students indicated that their social relations are equal.

Abstract

English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is designed to meet students' specific needs. It deals with a need analysis. It is crucial to conduct a need analysis before designing the materials and syllabus. The material learned by students in the Academic process should correlate to the student’s needs in the professional world/work world. This research is a Research and Development (R&D) which used ADDIE Model. It explored the required skills and difficulties encountered by the students in learning English, analyzed the learning materials topic that supports the profession, and the components of communicative competence need on therapeutic communication materials of palliative nursing. The data were collected through questionnaires and interviews. There were 30 nursing students and 2 nursing lecturers. The questionnaires were distributed to students to explore their needs, while the interview was used to support data from the questionnaire. The findings indicated that since it focuses on therapeutic communication of palliative nursing, speaking skills need to train more. This skill is important as well as listening, reading, and writing. It is interconnected and can not stand alone. All of them need to be mastered by students. The material content taught needs to focus on the cases of palliative nursing, and it must follow the steps of therapeutic communication techniques and strategies applied in daily nursing intervention procedures. So ESP nursing course will support the institution in producing qualified graduates who are competent and skilled in their profession, capable to communicate in both English and Indonesian, competing, and being ready to work in the international world.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic affects every sector of human life, including the education system. Satisfaction is the positive feeling of humans related to the process of doing or making something and during the pandemic, this aspect can be affected especially in the education field with online learning. It is an important aspect that affects students’ results in how they understand the material, do the evaluation, and get the best result from it. The study aimed to fulfill the need for information and reference material for researchers, teachers, and other Islamic schools for further research. The design of this literature review article used thematic analysis to give guidance and overview insight between analyzed studies and connection theory. The theory includes several factors based on Elshami’s theory of the intrinsic values of the students (interaction and outcomes) and also the extrinsic factors (instructor, technology, and learning media). The researcher finds related articles and selected them from 16 articles to 7 articles. The result shows that students' satisfaction relies a lot on external factors; teachers' skills, learning media, and technology during the EFL learning process. Based on this, institutions and teachers can find out solutions to solve the problem for future preparation in learning.

Abstract

This research is based on an analysis of vocational high school students’ needs majoring in Online Business and Marketing (OBM). It was found that the students faced difficulties in mastering vocabulary, in which vocabulary is a fundamental and important component for communication. Ideally the vocabulary that should be mastered is related to their major study. In order to overcome this problem, this research aims to develop learning media in the form of a Digital Vocabulary Pocket Book (DVPB) to teach vocabulary. This research used Research and Development (R&D) research method using the ADDIE model which was developed in 1996 by Dick & Carry, which includes 5 stages of research they are: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The results of this study are ; the feasibility value from the expert validation of the language aspect is 90%, media aspects 89%, and material aspects 89%. Moreover the 30 students’ responses toward Digital Vocabulary Pocket Book (DVPB) reach 94%. In conclusion, Pocket Book dictionary can be used to help students in learning vocabulary.

Abstract

A literary work is a representation of human thought that has been poured into a medium. The literary works classified as informative literature or imaginative literature. Informative literature focuses on facts, history, explanations, and famous people, whereas imaginative literature is based on fantasy and employs connotative language and qualified aesthetic art. Moral values are the values than can give the readers or viewers some positives message from literary works. This article tries to analyze the K-Drama entitled Flower of Evil. Flower of Evil is one of the most popular K-drama that aired in TVN (One of television station in South Korea) on Wednesday and Thursday from July to September 2020. This drama has got 57th Baeksang arts award for the best director in 2020. Baeksang arts award is one of the precious award in South Korea especially in entertainment industrial. This research uses qualitative method because the researchers try to describe the moral values from the K-Drama Flower of Evil. Documentation method is used for collecting the data of this research. The data analysis method is an important step in this research because it examines the validity and reliability of the data collections. The results of this research are the researchers have found out sixth moral values in this K-Drama. First, don’t judge the people just based on their appearance. Second, making your own reputation as a “good person” is important in today’s society. Third, father is the first love for his daughter. Fourth, family is always together, no matter how far you go family is still the most comfortable place to come home from all of the problems. Abstract

This study aims to analyze teachers' perceptions and challenges in integrating technology to teach English reading skills. This study uses a systematic analysis method that identifies existing literature on Google Scholar. Data collection was carried out through systematic literature review stages: 1) framing questions for a review, 2) identifying relevant work, 3) assessing the quality of studies, 4) summarizing the evidence, 5) interpreting the findings. The results of this study found that the teacher's positive perception of integrating technology in learning English and integrating technology can help teaching and learning activities and make classes interesting. The challenges faced by teachers in integrating technology include the lack of technology media facilities, slow internet connections, lack of teacher skills in mastering technology, teacher or student motivation to use technology in learning English, and proper material preparation. Based on these results, it can be concluded that teachers have a positive attitude towards integrating ICT in English learning activities, especially for teaching students' English reading skills.
