Abstract

This study is focused into shift in translation, to study the shift in the English translation translation of “Kimi no Koto ga Daidaidaidaidai Suki na 100-nin no Kanojo” manga. In translation process, there is text that can be directly translated into target language, but sometimes it needs to be adjusted or omitted by changing the phrase, clause, or sentence which is called shift in translation. Specifically, in a language where the grammatical structure differs from each other’s. For example, Japanese with Indonesian. The data will be identified utilizing Catford’s shift in translation theorem. With qualitative methods the data will be analyzed from the conversations between characters. This study discovers five types of shifts, which is: (1) level shift that occurs when the lexical and grammatical meaning from translation differs; (2) structure shift that occurs if the order of grammatical structure is different; (3) word class shift that occurs when the word class change for example from verb into noun; (4) unit shift that occurs when the phrase becomes clause, clause into sentence, etc. And lastly (5) intra system shift that occurs when the grammatical structure cause the translation to shift.

Abstract

This study analyzed the types of lexical cohesion and measured the degree of cohesiveness in “No One Ever Asks Mum,” a short story by Halima Khatun. It used Brian Paltridge’s theory of lexical Cohesion within the framework of Discourse Grammar and Scinto’s Formula, employing a qualitative descriptive method. The data for this study were collected through a documentation-collecting technique involving browsing and selecting the short story from Google Books. The chosen story consists of 67 paragraphs and 670 sentences, which are classified based on the types of lexical cohesion. The findings reveal the presence of 15 repetitions, 7 synonymy, 12 antonymy, 18 meronymy, 16 hyponymy, and 6 collocations in the short story. Additionally, the research also assesses the degree of cohesiveness in the short story using Scinto’s Formula, resulting in a score of 110,44%. This high percentage indicates a strong level of cohesiveness, indicating that the cohesive lexical devices employed by the author effectively contribute to the overall flow and coherence of the narrative.

Abstract

Linguistic landscape (LL) refers to the signs of linguistic objects located in public spaces as a place for human social interaction to perform a series of cultural activities. The linguistic landscape in Japan, in particular, on Nishikasai street, Tokyo, uses an absorption word called Gairaigo. This research focuses on the use of Gairaigo in the Japanese linguistic landscape, particularly in Nishikasai street, Tokyo. Through a qualitative method, the research data is drawn from the linguistic landscape along Nishikasai street, Tokyo. In the linguistic landscape of Nishikasai street, Tokyo, there are lexical semantic meanings connected with Gairaigo and there are shifts in the mention and selection of words even though the meaning and function are similar. On the other hand, the absorption of foreign language into Japanese was also found to have no change in word composition or meaning and function. The results of LL's research in Nishikasai, Tokyo showed that the criteria for the formation and use of gairaigo is based on the nuances of meaning contained in the foreign word cannot be represented by an equivalent word in Japanese; the foreign word used as Gairaigo is considered effective and efficient; and the foreign word, according to the sense of language, is considered to have good taste value, good, and harmonious as expressed by Sudjianto (2004).
