Abstract

Medication calendar or commonly known as functional calendar is a media that specifically designed to improve adherence to taking medication by adding several special features such as patient names, drug names, and hours of taking medication. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of using the medication calendar in increasing medication adherence in diabetes mellitus patients. This research used a pre-experimental research design with one group pretest and posttest design approach. The sampling technique used was simple random sampling. The sample was 30 respondents. Compliance in taking medication was obtained using the MMAS-8 questionnaire. The data of patients’ medication adherence before and after using medication calendar, was analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. The results showed that there was a difference in the medication adherence level before and after the medication calendar intervention with a value of p = 0.000 < α = 0.05. The use of medication calendar is proven to be able to influence the medication adherence in diabetes mellitus patients. This tool can be an alternative way to increase medication adherence, as part of an important pillar in the management of Diabetes Mellitus.

The purpose of this study was to identify quality of life based on patient characteristics. This research is descriptive with a cross-sectional approach. The sample size used was 87 adult patients with DM determined through purposive sampling techniques. This research was carried out from December 2021 to January 2022 at the Bangkingan Surabaya Health Center. Data was collected using questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive analysis. The results of this study showed that patients with DM who had a high quality of life were 50.6% and 49.4% showed a low quality of life. Based on the identification of patient characteristics data that describe the high quality of life are early elderly patients with an age range of 46-55 years (25.3%), female (39.1%), high school education (18.4%), and not working (33.5%). Other data obtained were patients with no family history (31.1%), duration of DM 1-5 years (26.5 and the majority using a single antidiabetic drug. Based on these data, patients still need to get continuous education to manage diabetes. blood glucose levels and can improve quality of life. The characteristics of DM sufferers can be an alarm that makes sufferers aware of the changes that occur in them. Patients who can recognize the characteristics in themselves will be able to maintain their quality of life.

Abstract

Hypertension is the main risk factor that leads to cardiovascular disease such as heart attack, heart failure and stroke, which is the highest cause of death in the world. One area with high risk of hypertension is the coastal area. The famous coastal area in the Lombok is Malimbu, located in North Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara Province. This research is an analytical observational study with a cross sectional design. This study aims to determine the correlation between smoking behavior and use of “used cooking oil” and the incidence of hypertension. Samples in this study were 70 people (n=70), and was taken using accidental sampling technique. Data were analyzed using chi-square. The results showed that the incidence of hypertension was 48% of the 70 respondents. Most of the respondents (70%), had no history of hypertension in their family. This research shows that there is no correlation between smoking behavior and the incidence of hypertension (p=0.807) with PR=1.156 (0.354 - 3.797). The use of “used cooking oil” was also found to be not correlated with the incidence of hypertension (p=0.632) with PR=1.275 (0.486 - 3.345). Although several previous studies showed that the smoking behavior and the use of used cooking oil correlate to hypertension, but this study result shows different data. This can be caused by other factors. Future research needs to examine the characteristics of smokers that may be related to the incidence of hypertension

Abstract

One of the treatments for appendicitis is surgery. Surgery will certainly cause post-operative pain that needs to be handled appropriately. If it is not treated immediately, pain in post-operative patients will slow down patient recovery, results in long hospitalization, prone the patient to a high complication rate, and require a lot of costs. Therefore, proper handling of post-operative pain is needed. In addition to drugs, non-pharmacological techniques can be a supportive treatment that proven to be effective. A non-pharmacological technique that can reduce pain is finger grip relaxation therapy. This study aims to describe the nursing care in a case of patient with post-operative appendicitis given finger grip relaxation therapy to reduce pain. This is a descriptive case study of an adult postoperative appendicitis patient with major nursing problems, acute pain. Results showed that the patients suffering level 6 of pain (moderate pain). The patient was given intervention including analgesic and supported with hand-held finger grip therapy in three days. The intervention was given three times a day, with a duration of 30 minutes. After given the intervention, the patient reported a decrease in pain level, into level 1 (mild pain). It can be concluded that nurses can apply finger grip relaxation therapy to provide nursing intervention or nursing care for post-operative patient to accelerate pain relief.
