Abstract

This study developed teaching materials to improve listening skills for learners of Indonesian as a Foreign Language (BIPA) at the Indonesian Embassy in Ankara. Following Thiagarajan's 4D model (Define, Design, Develop, Disseminate), a needs analysis identified learner requirements. The design phase focused on creating materials, particularly animated videos, to enhance listening comprehension. Development involved creating the materials and obtaining feedback from subject matter and media experts for BIPA 1 learners. Dissemination included internal validation by BIPA instructors and user testing with learners and teachers. Validation results from subject matter and media experts categorized the materials as "Feasible" and "Very Feasible," respectively. User feedback yielded an average score of "Very Feasible." These findings suggest the developed materials are highly suitable for enhancing BIPA 1 listening skills at the Indonesian Embassy in Ankara.

The ability to think critically is an important skill today, especially in facing the era of development of knowledge and technology in the 21st century. With this ability, students can analyze the truth of information both heard and read. However, this skill is still in a low level category so efforts are needed to improve it. One effort is to use innovative learning methods that can improve students' critical skills, namely the debate method. The aim of this research is to evaluate the level of critical thinking skills of BSA Study Program students, test the effectiveness of the debate, and provide academic suggestions for study programs and lecturers to improve the quality of learning that focuses on developing BSA students' critical thinking skills. This research method uses an experimental method. The subject of this research is the BSA Study Program, Faculty of Adab and Humanities, UIN Imam Bonjol Padang. This research data consists of two things, namely students' skills during debate and students' critical thinking abilities which were tested through tests. This research concludes that the debate method is effective in improving students' critical thinking skills and students' ability to build arguments, which can be achieved through structured and theory-based exercises. These findings can be widely used to train students' critical thinking skills and as a learning strategy in class by lecturers.

The data analyzed were 3 news texts from Instagram Uploads @indramayuterkini and 3 news texts from @indramayuinfo during the period 14 February 2023–2 March 2023. The results of the research showed that the vocabulary and grammar used by local online media on Instagram @indramayuterkini tended to be cornering and limiting public view of the other party. On the other hand, the @indramayuterkini media is trying to build a positive narrative for the Regent of Indramayu. The opposite happened to the media @indramayuinfo which tended to use positive vocabulary and grammar toward the Deputy Regent of Indramayu. However, the other party is actually narrated through a cornering narrative. Environmental issues are a major concern in society. This is caused by human behavior that adversely affects the environment. In relation to these issues, folklore or old literature has great potential to raise human awareness of the importance of maintaining the sustainability of nature. Abstract

The study illuminates the complexities inherent in translating expressive language by analyzing the Indonesian novel Pulang by Leila S. Chudori and its English translation Home novel. Utilizing Appraisal discourse analysis, a robust linguistic framework for evaluating language, the study identify the translator's rendering of 155 expressive utterances from the source text into 158 corresponding passages in the English translation. The findings reveal salient patterns of alteration between the source and target texts. Specifically, shifts emerged in the translator's lexical choices pertaining to attitude, engagement, and graduation. While preserving the core ideas, the translated version exhibits distinct preferences for certain attitude markers, more frequent intensification, and a tendency to explicate engagement meanings more than the original Indonesian. Such modifications seem subtle yet prove consequential. The research indicates that altering the lexical or phrasal selections surrounding expressive speech can inadvertently distort the intended message and tenor, potentially diminishing the reader's investment and engagement with the literary work. Moving forward, translators seeking to produce more authentic translations of expressive texts must remain acutely cognizant of the cultural nuances ingrained in the source language and exercise care in choosing lexical items that accurately convey the original meanings and affect. Meticulous word choice preserves the vital expressive essence between languages. Overall, Appraisal discourse analysis demonstrates a robust framework for evaluating and enhancing literary translation quality.

Abstract

A proverb is one of figurative languages delivered from generation to generation aimed to be a guide in living life. Thus, people can learn many lessons through it. In Malay language, there are quite a lot of proverbs that have natural elements such as water, fire, earth, and wind/air in them. Unfortunately, learning about Malay proverbs in schools has not been able to restore the existence of Malay proverbs among young people. This study aims to introduce a different way of studying Malay proverbs, especially those with natural elements, namely by looking for the meaning and reason behind the choice of words in the proverb. By using the method of inquisitive semantics analysis in analyzing the data collected, this study was able to find four elements of nature in Malay proverbs namely the elements of water, fire, earth, and wind/air. Specifically, this study found a total of 8 proverbs with the element of water, 4 proverbs with the element of fire, 4 proverbs with the element of earth, and 4 proverbs with the element of wind/air. This study found the fact that Malay Society is indeed very close to nature as proven by the many natural elements found in Malay proverbs. In these proverbs, many things can be learned, for example, culture, history, and also the mindset of the Malay Society itself.

Abstract

Fabel is one genre in children literature that is utilized to teach moral values to children. Animals in fable are metaphors of the value in society so that they can internalize the value and identify themselves with the ideal value or the logos one. This research is qualitative research. Source of data is from a children fable entitled The Ant and the Grasshopper that is retold by Jan Payne. The data is collected using literature review method. The data are analyzed descriptive-interpretatively using Derrida deconstruction reading. Derrida’s deconstruction reading uncovers the instability of meaning in the fable which ends up marginalizing children. The binary opposition is used in the fable to maintain the stability of logos meaning, namely the importance of diligence and hard work. Meanwhile, the other part of the binary opposition is laziness which is used as the marginalized part. This part is used to assert the logos. Apart from that, other meanings that disturb the instability of meaning are marginalized, one of which is the gray area. This fable shows that there is a possible gray area that is an alternative between working hard and being lazy at work or spending time relaxing. However, to emphasize the center, this gray area is also marginalized. As a result, voiceless children have no choice but to identify themselves with the discourse expressed in the fable. Thus, this logos construction can be said to impose values on children. On the other hand, children themselves do not have the capacity and power to provide counternarratives because cognitively they have not yet developed and they do not have a voice to deliver their concern because the narration is dominated by adult writer.

Abstract

This research investigates the role of conjunctions in constructing cohesive narratives on Najwa Shihab's YouTube channel in the episode “Putusan MK: Publik Memang Seharusnya Marah”. Employing a qualitative discourse analysis approach, data was collected through non-participant observation and analyzed using Moeliono et al.'s (2017) framework for the types and functions of conjunctions. The analysis results demonstrate that both coordinating and subordinating conjunctions remain integral elements in Shihab's narratives. These conjunctions serve various functions, including providing contextual details to enhance explanations, emphasizing Shihab's viewpoints, and presenting perspectives or alternative choices to the viewers. Ultimately, this study highlights how Shihab's strategic use of conjunctions promotes coherence in her narratives, fostering audience engagement and understanding.
