Abstract

Enhancing digital literacy has become a national priority in Indonesia; however, university students still demonstrate limited critical competencies in analyzing, comparing, and evaluating digital information. This study aims to examine how a blended learning model fosters critical digital media literacy within communication education. This research employed a qualitative approach using a best practice case study design focusing on high-achieving students. Data were collected through classroom observations, reflective assignments, and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) involving 29 participants, and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings indicate that blended learning facilitates students’ analytical reasoning, cross-platform comparative assessment, and systematic information evaluation. Students demonstrated strong abilities in verifying information credibility, identifying media bias, and reflecting on their own critical thinking processes. This study concludes that blended learning functions as an effective pedagogical space for cultivating higher-order critical digital media literacy competencies in communication students.

Abstract

This research addresses the issue and phenomenon wherein Indonesian cuisine is perceived as sharing the same identity as Malaysian cuisine; indeed, certain dishes have even been claimed by Malaysia as its own indigenous specialties. A gap in identification exists regarding the similarities inherent in various Malay culinary traditions stemming from the shared Malay heritage of both nations which complicates the establishment of a distinct identity for specific dishes. In light of this, the study aims to examine how Indonesia employs gastrodiplomacy, particularly through various digital media channels, to differentiate its cuisine from Malaysia's. The research is guided by digital media campaign theory and gastrodiplomacy theory and uses a qualitative technique within a constructivist paradigm. Data were obtained by means of in-depth interviews and processed with theme analysis. The results imply that: 1) gastrodiplomacy operations are carried out through “soft diplomacy”; 2) the digital media campaign approach comprises operating a multi-pronged ecosystem that merges official government initiatives with organic engagement from the public and the diaspora; 3) 3) Indonesian cuisine emphasizes its uniqueness by implementing various spices and seasonings, authentic flavors, and cultural narratives; and 4) not only the flavor profiles, but the digital media campaign also serves as a concrete symbol of shared cultural heritage, contributing significantly to the development of the “nation branding” identity of Indonesian cuisine.

Abstract

Banjar folklore figure Kuyang is transformed and represented in Indonesian horror film Kuyank (2026) and traditionally circulating through oral storytelling and collective memory, Kuyang functioned as a moral-regulative narrative within communal communication. Its adaptation into cinema reflects a shift in communicative authority and symbolic meaning. Based on Stuart Hall’s representation theory, Couldry and Hepp’s mediatization model and Barbara Creed’s monstrous feminine concept, qualitative textual analysis is used to investigate narrative structure, visualization and promotional narratives. The results uncover three shifts: ontological (from the imagined folkloric creature to a visualized monster), functional-relational (from moral narrative to commercial spectacle), and institutional (from collectively transmission to centralized media production). The paper claims that cinema is involved in the performance and reconstruction of folklore in line with genre formulas and market strategies.

Abstract

Social media's increasing volume of health information provides opportunities for knowledge dissemination but also increases exposure to misinformation and disinformation. This study is framed by digital health literacy (DHL) as the primary analytical lens, and uses and gratifications theory as a complementary lens to understand the students’ reasons for seeking, selecting, and using health information on social media. It reviews the way of students of different faculties and study programs at UIN Sultan Syarif Kasim Riau conduct search and verification of health information. This is a descriptive qualitative study, which was carried out in April 2026. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions which is analyzed thematically using the Miles, Huberman and Saldaña model. The results imply that TikTok is the primary platform for health information seeking, which is attributed to its engaging audiovisual format and students’ algorithmic competency in responding to algorithm-driven content. Multi-source verification practices also vary depending on academic background, with students citing scholarly articles, personal experience, peer opinions, and checking influencer credibility. Entertainment-driven media use generally tended to result in situational health information seeking. Students were generally better at recognizing misinformation than correcting it publicly, pointing to the need for DHL education in university curricula.

Abstract

The high number of online gamblers in Indonesia is linked to the availability of information regarding the names of online gambling sites. This kind of information often obtained through YouTube Shorts comment sections. This study aims to identify the visual characteristics of online gambling spam messages found in YouTube Shorts comment sections in Indonesia. A descriptive qualitative approach utilizing text mining was employed to analyze 2,715 comments identified as online gambling spam, drawn from 204 YouTube Shorts videos collected in November 2025. The findings reveal that online gambling spam messages predominantly target comedy and podcast content, averaging 13 comments per video. The study also identifies five visual characteristics of these comments: the use of non-ASCII characters, specific keywords associated with online gambling, the inclusion of “4D” in the site’s name, the use of emojis, and the use of alphanumeric characters. These characteristics are designed to enable the spam comments to bypass automatic social media moderation systems. Based on these findings, the researchers recommend to enhancing public digital literacy to enable the detection and conscious to report those online gambling comments.
