Abstract

The widespread circulation of “fear of marriage” narratives on social media has intensified public discourse on intimate relationships and raised concerns about shifting marital perceptions among Generation Z. This study examines the relationship between social media exposure, perceptions of negative marriage-related issues, and marriage preferences among Generation Z. A quantitative descriptive approach was employed using accidental sampling. Data were collected from 390 undergraduate students from Universitas Pakuan, IPB University, and Universitas Ibn Khaldun in Bogor City, Indonesia, through a structured questionnaire with a four-point Likert scale. Descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation tests were applied. The findings reveal a weak but significant positive correlation between social media exposure and marriage preference (r = 0.164; p = 0.001), and a significant negative correlation between perceptions of negative issues such as domestic violence, financial burden, and infidelity and marriage preference (r = −0.238; p = 0.000). Notably, 95.92% of respondents reported positive marriage preferences. This study contributes to communication scholarship by demonstrating that social media does not reduce Generation Z’s intention to marry, but instead shapes more selective and rational marital decision-making within digital meaning-construction processes.

Abstract

Tempo has transformed its news presentation strategy by developing more engaging video and audio content, particularly through the Bocor Alus Politik podcast. The commodification process within this podcast is intriguing to examine from a media political economy perspective. This study analyzes the implementation of Vincent Mosco’s theory of commodification covering content, audience, and labor in the Bocor Alus Politik podcast on YouTube. Using a qualitative approach and content analysis, the research explores how investigative journalism is repackaged into commercially viable digital products. The findings show that content commodification occurs through casual formats, provocative titles, and branding strategies that enhance exchange value while promoting Tempo’s premium subscription services. Audience commodification is reflected in the transformation of viewers into measurable assets through data extraction, watch time, and engagement metrics such as likes and shares that strengthen algorithmic visibility. Labor commodification reveals that journalists’ expertise, time, and reputation are capitalized as intangible assets to boost digital performance, often blurring the boundary between editorial independence and commercial demands. This study highlights the tension between economic sustainability and journalistic integrity in the digital platform era.

Abstract

The rapid growth of TikTok has created new opportunities for promoting tourist destinations, including hidden gem locations such as Curug Walet in Bogor. This study aims to analyze how TikTok content strategies contribute to the process of forming travel interest through a combination of platform-specific technical elements and psychological approaches to audiences. Employing a qualitative case study approach, the research draws on in-depth interviews with a content creator, an open-trip service provider, and active TikTok users, complemented by content analysis of relevant videos. The analysis is grounded in Uses and Gratifications Theory, which explains how audiences’ needs for entertainment, information, and emotional experiences are fulfilled through TikTok content. The findings indicate that algorithm optimization, creative feature utilization, and emotional storytelling, particularly through the use of Fear of Missing Out (FoMO), play an important role in shaping audience perceptions and attraction toward the destination. This study highlights that TikTok content strategies function not merely as promotional tools but as a form of experiential communication that shapes audience interest in alternative tourist destinations.

Abstract

The National Health Insurance (JKN) program has been reported by the media in relation to fraud cases, which are framed not only as legal violations but also as issues of public service governance. This study aims to examine how online news media construct narratives, meanings, and power relations surrounding the JKN fraud issue. Employing a qualitative approach and Van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis framework, which includes the dimensions of text, social cognition, and social context, this study analyzes three news articles published by Kompas.com, Detik.com, and Kumparan.com. The findings reveal that each media outlet constructs the discourse on JKN fraud through distinct emphases. Kompas frames fraud as a systemic problem involving networks of power, Detik highlights administrative responses and state-imposed sanctions with limited transparency, while Kumparan emphasizes cross-institutional collaboration as the proposed solution. Overall, media discourse tends to position the state as a dominant and solution-oriented actor, while critical discussion of the JKN policy structure and oversight mechanisms remains limited. These findings indicate that the media play a crucial role in shaping public understanding of JKN fraud and in representing power relations among the government, hospitals, and regulatory institutions within health policy discourse.

Abstract

The issue of student mental health has received increasing attention in online media coverage as academic pressure and institutional demands in higher education have increased. This study aims to analyze how student mental health is represented in the online media Kumparan through a corpus linguistic approach combined with framing theory (Entman, 1993), Fairclough’s (1995; Critical Discourse Analysis 2010), and the corpus linguistic methodological perspectives of Baker (2006) and McEnery & Hardie (2012). The research data consisted of 30 news articles published between 2021 and 2025 and analyzed using AntConc software through word frequency, collocation, and keyword in context (KWIC) techniques. The results showed that students were represented as a vulnerable group experiencing academic pressure, while campuses were ambiguously positioned as both a source of pressure and a provider of psychological support. The main findings explicitly confirm that the media predominantly frames the issue of student mental health in an individualistic manner rather than as a structural or institutional problem. This study reinforces corpus-based media framing studies in the context of the discourse on student mental health in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the representation of the word “love” and gender constructs in the lyrics of Dewa 19 and Raisa songs using the Corpus-Assisted Discourse Studies (CADS) approach. This study is a mixed, qualitative-descriptive study supported by quantitative corpus analysis. A total of 30 song lyrics containing the word “love” were analyzed using the AntConc tool through three main stages, namely word frequency analysis, collocation, and concordance to identify lexical patterns and discourse orientation that emerged. The results of the analysis show that Dewa 19's lyrics tend to frame love through language that affirms emotional dominance and masculine roles that direct relationships. In contrast, Raisa's lyrics present love as an affective experience that is nurtured through reflection and emotional closeness, thus forming a more egalitarian representation. These findings confirm that popular music plays a role as a space for the formation of social meanings related to gender relations and roles, while also encouraging the need for more empowering representations in Indonesian cultural discourse.

Abstract

This study analyzes PT Pertamina Hulu Rokan's (PHR) crisis communication strategy in response to allegations of environmental pollution in Rantau Kopar Village in 2025. Using a qualitative, content-analytic approach, the study examined media reports, official statements, and academic literature on environmental communication and Situational Crisis Communication Theory (SCCT). The results of the study show that PT PHR predominantly used a diminishment strategy to reduce perceptions of the crisis's seriousness without admitting fault or apologizing. This strategy was chosen to maintain reputation and reduce legal risk, but it created a gap in public expectations regarding transparency and ecological responsibility. The study recommends strengthening communication strategies through a combination of diminishment, bolstering, and rebuilding elements, and increasing public engagement to sustainably restore public trust.

Abstract

Domestic violence represents a form of gender inequality that continues to persist in patriarchal societies, placing women in vulnerable and oppressive positions within the domestic sphere. As a medium, film functions not only as entertainment but also as a site that reflects power relations and social representations shaping public perceptions of gender and violence. This study aims to analyze how the resistance of women who experience domestic violence is constructed in the film Bolehkah Sekali Saja Kumenangis. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method with Sara Mills’ Critical Discourse Analysis to examine the concepts of subject position, object position, and reader position in constructing the meaning of resistance. The findings indicate that the film portrays women not merely as objects of violence but as subjects who engage in both verbal and nonverbal forms of resistance, offering a critical reading of patriarchal power relations within the family.

Abstract

This study examines the media relations strategies employed by the Directorate General of Taxes (DGT) to improve its institutional image. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation of media activities, and analysis of official documents to understand communication practices comprehensively. The findings reveal a structured and sequential media relations process comprising: (1) provision of clear and accurate information materials, (2) facilitation of verification mechanisms, (3) relational engagement with journalists, and (4) integration of the PESO media strategy (paid, earned, shared, and owned media). While empirical evidence on public compliance or brand perception is limited, informants perceive that these strategies enhance transparency, credibility, and accessibility of information, thereby supporting the improvement of DGT’s institutional image. The study proposes a conceptual model illustrating how information supply, verification, relational trust, and multi-channel communication interact to strengthen perceived institutional legitimacy and media relationships. These findings highlight the potential of strategic media relations in public institutions to address negative perceptions and reinforce organizational credibility.

Abstract

Enhancing digital literacy has become a national priority in Indonesia; however, university students still demonstrate limited critical competencies in analyzing, comparing, and evaluating digital information. This study aims to examine how a blended learning model fosters critical digital media literacy within communication education. This research employed a qualitative approach using a best practice case study design focusing on high-achieving students. Data were collected through classroom observations, reflective assignments, and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) involving 29 participants, and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings indicate that blended learning facilitates students’ analytical reasoning, cross-platform comparative assessment, and systematic information evaluation. Students demonstrated strong abilities in verifying information credibility, identifying media bias, and reflecting on their own critical thinking processes. This study concludes that blended learning functions as an effective pedagogical space for cultivating higher-order critical digital media literacy competencies in communication students.
