Abstract

The article explores the significance of local Indonesian wisdom in the 2024 presidential campaigns, particularly on social media. It uses a constructivist paradigm to analyze the interactions of candidates in political campaigns. Data on local wisdom was collected through interviews, focus group discussions, and observation. The research findings suggest that local wisdom values were effectively utilized as a central approach in the 2024 presidential election campaigns on social media, particularly on Instagram. The religious and socio-cultural activities of the Indonesian people exemplify the significance of local wisdom in political campaigns. The local wisdom approach with a socio-cultural orientation strongly resonated with the Indonesian populace, but the exploration of local wisdom values was primarily limited to the use of cultural symbols during the election campaign period.

Abstract

This study analyzes the transformation of female agency in Khaled Hosseini’s novel A Thousand Splendid Suns through the lens of Muted Group Theory (MGT). Employing a qualitative text-based approach, the analysis explores how the character Mariam undergoes a process of silencing shaped by patriarchal social structures and male-dominated language, and how she gradually reconstructs her voice through acts of resistance. The findings reveal that silencing of women occurs not only physically and verbally but also symbolically and epistemically. However, personal resistance, women’s solidarity, and self-awareness emerge as key elements in articulating female agency. Through Mariam’s narrative, the study demonstrates that women are capable of creating alternative spaces of meaning beyond dominant systems. Accordingly, this research not only extends the application of MGT in literary contexts but also underscores literature as an emancipatory arena reflecting women’s struggles against social injustice. Furthermore, it highlights the potential of enriching MGT through dialogue with intersectionality, while offering practical implications for gender-sensitive communication education and media literacy.

Abstract

The phenomenon of using the close friend feature on second Instagram accounts reflects the growing need for more intimate interaction spaces in the social media era. This study aims to explore how social construction shapes user behavior in utilizing this feature. The research uses a qualitative descriptive method with the Social Construction of Technology (SCOT) as the theoretical framework. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with six purposively selected informants. Findings indicate that the use of the close friend feature on second accounts is not only a form of privacy control but also a social strategy to maintain exclusive emotional bonds. Users perceive this feature as a safe space for self-expression, free from public norms. In conclusion, Instagram’s second account and close friend feature represent a technological adaptation to the evolving social needs of its users.

Yogyakarta is a city famous for its cultural, traditional and tourism elements. However, data from 2022-2023 shows that the number of tourist visits did not increase even though the pandemic was over. Therefore, the local government paid special attention and tried to realize creative products based on traditional and popular culture in the form of an event called Pasar Kangen. This event is quite unique and different because it carries the concept of presenting the nuances of the past in each element. From this problem, the researcher analyzed how the strategic communication approach used in the Nostalgia marketing element is effective in attracting tourists to the Pasar Kangen Yogyakarta. The theory used is nostalgia marketing with a descriptive qualitative method. The results of the study are through 4 approaches, the first is personal nostalgia in the form of the presence of typical food/snacks from various regions which are served traditionally. Interpersonal nostalgia through the presence of antique goods/toys that remind us of the atmosphere of the past. Cultural nostalgia through arts such as dance/nyanyain which are presented as an entertainment stage and virtual nostalgia, namely consumers can feel the atmosphere of Pasar Kangen through social media. Pasar Kangen has succeeded in presenting and reviving past memories for consumers so that it can be used as an effective strategy to increase tourist visits.

This study seeks to examine ethical breaches in advertising inside online gambling promotions on live streaming platforms and football posters. This study employs a qualitative descriptive research method. The data collecting involved the documentation of live streaming platforms and football match advertisements. Abstract

This study examines the changing radio station landscape in Indonesia, especially how radio stations are adjusting to the move from traditional to digital advertising methods. As a result, traditional radio commercials are having a challenging time, especially when compared to the exact targeting and tracking that digital platforms offer. This study addresses this issue using a qualitative approach, focusing on case studies and interviews with radio broadcasting experts from leading radio stations. The study highlights three main ways to update the radio. The first is media convergence, which means combining radio with digital tools such as streaming, podcasts, and social media. The second is revenue diversification, which seeks new ways to generate revenue, such as event sponsorships and brand partnerships. We now discuss content enhancement, which involves creating local and engaging content to build a loyal audience base. In the digital age, radio must transform into a vibrant multimedia orchestra to truly flourish. This platform provides unique value to both listeners and advertisers.

Abstract

The development of digital technology has transformed how young people, particularly college students, communicate and develop their identities on social media. Personal branding has become crucial in this era, yet many individuals lack the digital literacy skills necessary to manage it effectively. Low digital literacy can lead to the spread of inaccurate information and inauthentic imagery, which can have negative impacts on digital privacy and reputation. This study aims to understand how high-achieving college students construct their personal brands on social media and the role digital literacy plays in this process. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach, collecting data through in-depth interviews with six high-achieving college students. The analysis used Miles and Huberman's interactive model. The results revealed that the participants utilized Instagram and LinkedIn in complementary ways: Instagram was used to reach a broader audience through visual narratives, and LinkedIn was used to showcase academic achievements and build professional networks. Interacting with their audience is a crucial strategy for strengthening the credibility of their personal brand, which opens up opportunities for collaboration and professional relationships. Furthermore, digital literacy encompasses not only technical skills but also ethical awareness, critical thinking, and responsibility in managing digital information. In conclusion, high-achieving students' personal branding is formed through the synergy of social media utilization and digital literacy competencies. Together, these serve as a crucial foundation for building academic and professional reputations in the digital age.

Abstract

Majene Regency West Sulawesi has a very high level of earthquake vulnerability due to its position in an active subduction zone. This research identifies, analyzes and optimizes local wisdom-based earthquake mitigation communication using a qualitative ethnographic approach through in-depth interviews and participatory observation in five sub-districts.The results show that the Majene Regency Government faces limitations in formal mitigation communication due to budget and infrastructure constraints. However, the Mandar community developed a comprehensive mitigation communication system based on local wisdom: the terminology “linor” and “lino” for earthquakes, “lembo tallu” and “lembo pitu” for tsunamis, observation of natural signs as non-verbal communication, “banua kayyang” architecture as short communication, and the “tolak bala” ritual as spiritual communication. The communities implement this system in preparedness by using inherited knowledge for evacuation routes and verifying natural signs through BMKG information via smartphone. The Convergent Communication Model that integrates traditional communication with modern technology can be a solution to optimize mitigation communication to increase community preparedness.
