Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of the Market Play Learning method on early childhood numeracy literacy. Numeracy literacy is a fundamental competency that must be developed from an early age as it is directly related to children's readiness for higher education levels and daily life challenges. The underlying problem of this research is the low numeracy literacy skills of children aged 5–6 years, indicated by difficulties in recognizing numbers, performing simple arithmetic operations, and understanding the concepts of more and less. To address this issue, the research employed a quasi-experimental method with a pretest-posttest control group design. The participants were 60 children from TK Ceria Eduloka, Kecamatan Seberida, Kabupaten Indragiri Hulu, divided into experimental and control groups. The research instrument consisted of a numeracy literacy test covering number recognition, simple arithmetic operations, measurement, and money concepts. Data were collected through pretests and posttests, then analyzed using paired sample t-tests along with normality and homogeneity tests. The results revealed a significant improvement in numeracy literacy skills in the experimental group after applying the Market Play Learning method, with higher posttest scores compared to the control group. The greatest improvements were found in number recognition, basic arithmetic operations, and the use of money in role-play transactions. These findings indicate that the Market Play Learning method provides a contextual, enjoyable, and meaningful learning experience, enabling children to internalize numeracy concepts more effectively. It can therefore be concluded that this method has a positive and significant effect on enhancing early childhood numeracy literacy and is recommended as an alternative instructional strategy in early childhood education settings.
