Abstract

Zakat has a strategic role in poverty eradication and equitable distribution of socio-economic welfare in Indonesia, a country with the largest Muslim population in the world that has the potential to collect zakat up to IDR 327 trillion per year but its realization has only reached 5-7% of the national potential. This study aims to describe the effectiveness of BAZNAS Mesuji Regency management in managing zakat, infaq, and shadaqah (ZIS) to strengthen the welfare of the people in Simpang Pematang District, with a focus on the functions of planning, organizing, implementing, and supervising. A descriptive qualitative field approach was applied through in-depth interviews with 3 core BAZNAS administrators (chairman, treasurer, secretary) and 5 selected mustahiq, complemented by participatory observation and document analysis using the Miles and Huberman interactive model (data reduction, display, verification). The findings show the high effectiveness of ZIS management: fund collection reaches IDR 150 million per year from a 2.5% ASN salary deduction; Productive distribution reached 120 mustahiq through business training (such as Z-Auto) and tahfidz scholarships, increasing mustahiq income by an average of 25-30%; public data transparency and internal audits ensure sharia compliance. This research contributes to the theory of zakat management of non-profit organizations with a local empirical model, which uniquely integrates planning functions (through RKAT and 2.5% ASN salary deduction), structural organization (division of tasks for deputy heads of funds, distribution, finance, and HR), implementation of productive zakat (such as the Z-Auto program and tahfidz scholarships that increase mustahiq income by 25-30%), as well as transparent supervision (internal audit and public data), especially in the rural context of Lampung with the challenges of low zakat literacy and structural poverty. It is also recommended for policy makers to replicate productive zakat programs in rural areas to accelerate SDGs 1 (no poverty).

Abstract

This study examines the genealogy of “digital zuhud” as a response to the attention economy that exploits individual subjectivity in the contemporary digital ecosystem. The main focus of the study is directed at the dialectic between Michel Foucault's concept of technologies of the self and the practice of muraqabah in the tradition of Islamic spirituality. Using a descriptive-analytical qualitative design with a literature study approach, this study analyzes the primary texts Technologies of the Self and Al-Ri'ayah through a philosophical parallelism method. The findings show that muraqabah functions as a transcendent mechanism that builds spiritual resilience to counter neoliberal alienation and self-quantification. Digital zuhud is formulated as a reconstructive framework for hybrid subjectivity to maintain moral agency amid algorithmic control. This study contributes to enriching the Foucaultian discourse with Eastern spiritual dimensions, while bridging the gap between Western technological ethics and Islamic tradition. The practical implications include guidelines for designing technologies that support ethical self-care. Future research is recommended to conduct empirical testing to validate the effectiveness of digital zuhud on a broader user population.

Abstract

The mahr is an essential element of Islamic marriage, normatively established by the Qur’an and Hadith as a wife’s right and as a symbol of women’s dignity. However, in practice, Muslim communities, including those in Indonesia, often incorporate additional elements such as seserahan (gifts) and bawaan (additional mahr), which are more rooted in local custom and socio-cultural construction. This study aims to critically examine the legal and social positions of both the obligatory mahr and these additional forms through the perspectives of Maqāṣid al-Sharīʿah and the sociology of Islamic law. Using a qualitative approach based on interviews, participant observation, and documentation in Probolinggo society, this research employs contextual hermeneutics to interpret normative texts alongside lived practices. The findings show that seserahan and bawaan have undergone a functional shift: from voluntary cultural expressions into socially expected obligations that often serve as markers of status and symbolic capital. While mahr consistently reflects the maqāṣid principles of protection of honor (hifz al-ard), lineage (hifz an-nasl), and wealth (hifz al-mal), seserahan increasingly operates within a socio-economic logic that may contradict the principle of taysīr (ease), particularly when it creates structural financial pressure on the groom’s family. This study contributes by proposing a maqāṣid-based socio-legal framework that distinguishes between ʿurf as a source of social cohesion and ʿurf as a mechanism of latent coercion. It demonstrates that the transformation of cultural practices into quasi-obligatory norms represents a form of “normative expansion” beyond classical Islamic legal requirements. From a sociological perspective, these practices illustrate the dynamic negotiation between Islamic legal norms and local culture, where law is reproduced through symbols, social expectations, and power relations. The article concludes by advocating for a reinterpretation of marriage practices through premarital education and the promotion of a “dignified yet simple marriage” model that restores the ethical.
