Abstract

This research is based on the fatwa of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) on the prohibition of interfaith greetings, which has sparked widespread debate in Indonesia's pluralistic society, which has given rise to tensions between Islamic theological values and the demands of social diversity in the context of religious pluralism. This research aims to analyze the fatwa from the perspective of postmodern social theory. The scope of the study covers the theological, sociological, and social implications of the fatwa's implementation in society. The method used is a qualitative study with a document analysis approach and a literature review of the official MUI statement, public responses, and postmodern social theories. The results of the study indicate that the MUI fatwa is based on efforts to maintain the purity of the Islamic faith, but in the context of a pluralistic society it can give rise to social exclusivism and resistance to the values of inclusivity. In conclusion, although this fatwa has a strong normative basis from a religious perspective, its implementation requires a more adaptive socio-cultural approach to avoid polarization amidst the diversity of Indonesian society.

Abstract

This article examines the Israel-Palestine conflict, which has persisted since the is- suance of the Balfour Declaration in 1917. The declaration paved the way for the establishment of Israel in 1948 and consequently led to the displacement of the Pales- tinian population. Since then, numerous confrontations have occurred, including the Six-Day War, the Intifada movements, and repeated assaults on Gaza.  The conflict reached a new level of escalation in October 2023 through the Taufan al-Aqsa (Al- Aqsa Storm) operation, involving Hamas with the support of Hezbollah (Lebanon), the Houthi movement (Yemen), and Iran. Although Sunni and Shia groups differ ide- ologically, the participation of Shia factions demonstrates a shared opposition to Israel and a unified front in defending Palestine amidst the complex geopolitical tensions of the Middle East. The findings of this article indicate that the involvement of Shia factions in the Taufan al-Aqsa conflict, such as Iran’s support through Hezbollah and the Houthi movement has effectively created a proxy war against Israel, encompassing both military and ideological dimensions. Despite theological differences, Sunni and Shia actors remain united in resisting Israeli occupation. Within the framework of re- ligious moderation, the principles of tawassuth (moderation) and tasamuh (tolerance) enable Sunnis to support the Palestinian cause on humanitarian grounds, without nec- essarily endorsing Shia doctrinal positions. Solidarity rooted in shared human values thus serves as the foundation for cross-sectarian collaboration in the ongoing Pales- tinian struggle.

Abstract

This study explores the effectiveness of a reward system, in the form of granting mobile phone access, as a strategy to enhance motivation and memorization outcomes among students in the tahfiz program at Ma’had Aly Ibnu Hajar Boarding School (IHBS). The policy was introduced in a limited and regulated format during the 2024–2025 academic year, marking a significant shift in the pesantren tradition, which typically restricts mobile phone use. Employing a descriptive quantitative approach enriched with qualitative insights, data were collected through open-ended questionnaires administered to 21 students from the third and fourth semesters who had experienced the tahfiz process both before and after the reward system was introduced. The findings indicate that 80% of the respondents experienced an increase in motivation and memorization output, reporting improved consistency and enthusiasm in achieving targets. Nonetheless, a few students raised concerns regarding the sincerity and purity of their intentions, suggesting that extrinsic rewards may affect spiritual focus if not properly managed. The study concludes that mobile phone–based rewards, when implemented under strict supervision and embedded within a spiritually grounded educational environment, can serve as an effective motivational tool in tahfiz institutions. These findings offer practical insights for pesantren seeking culturally sensitive and innovative strategies to support students’ long-term commitment to Quranic memorization.

Abstract

This paper seeks to understand the worsening health crisis in Gaza, which affects both the people and the healthcare infrastructure, as well as the regional and international responses to this plight. Gaza has become a stage for a humanitarian crisis as a result of Israeli incursions into Palestine. Among the multifaceted crises occurring in Gaza, the healthcare sector has borne the brunt of the impact. The authors employ qualitative research with a descriptive method to examine the problem at hand. The article begins by discussing the health crisis in Gaza, which has worsened following the Israeli attacks after October 7. It highlights the reported assaults on healthcare infrastructure and medical workers that have further strained the existing medical capacity. Considering recent developments, it can be observed that regional states in the Middle East and the international community have not remained idle amid the ongoing crisis in Gaza. Various efforts have been made to address the crisis, involving both state and non-state actors, with aims ranging from calls for boycotts, recognition of Palestine as a state, to the issuance of arrest warrants against Israeli leaders. Overall, this paper concludes that despite the worsening health crisis in Gaza, recent developments indicate active efforts from the international community to alleviate the suffering.

Abstract

Muslimat Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) was established to enhance the role of Muslim women in religious, social, and educational spheres. As a key figure, Solichah Wahid Hasyim played a pivotal role in transforming Muslimat NU from its early form as Nahdlatul Oelama Moederbond (NOM) into an autonomous NU body with a clear organizational vision. Guided by transformative leadership theory and gender and development perspectives, this study examines her leadership strategies in institutionalizing Muslimat NU through the establishment of local branches, member capacity building, and program innovation. This study employs historical research methods encompassing four stages: heuristic (collecting archival records and treatises), source criticism (evaluating authenticity and credibility), interpretation (contextualizing contributions within Indonesia's socio-political landscape), and historiography (systematic narrative construction). The findings reveal that Solichah challenged the entrenched domestic stigma faced by women from Islamic boarding schools by initiating campaigns to eradicate illiteracy, promoting vocational training, and advancing health education, while aligning these initiatives with Islamic values. Her influence extended nationally through active participation in the Indonesian Women's Congress (KOWANI) and the national parliament, where she advocated for policies related to women's rights and education. This study underscores the importance of integrating religious legitimacy with transformative leadership to achieve sustainable women's empowerment. The findings not only enrich leadership and gender studies within the Islamic context but also highlight Solichah Wahid Hasyim's enduring legacy as a role model for contemporary Muslim women leaders in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to examine and analyze the implementation of religious moderation values in realizing peaceful and inclusive education, as well as the active role of students in preventing the potential development of extremism within the campus environment. The revitalization of religious moderation values is essential not only to prevent extremist behavior but also to shape individuals who possess a holistic understanding of diversity, enabling them to contribute positively to national and civic life. This study employs a case study design with a qualitative approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation. The findings indicate that the revitalization of religious moderation values can be carried out through various strategies, such as integrating moderation principles into the educational curriculum, strengthening character development through extracurricular activities, optimizing the use of social media, collaborating with multiple stakeholders, and conducting regular monitoring and evaluation of student activities. Furthermore, the role of lecturers in modeling exemplary behavior and reinforcing moderation narratives is highly influential in fostering a peaceful and harmonious academic atmosphere. Therefore, continuous efforts to revitalize religious moderation values within the campus environment are necessary as part of strengthening national identity grounded in the principles of Pancasila and Bhinneka Tunggal Ika.

Abstract

This study examines the role of Islamic values in supporting work–life balance among employees at PT Tjiwulan Putra Mandiri, addressing a gap in the existing literature that has largely discussed religiosity in general terms without explaining how specific Islamic practices function as coping resources in high-pressure industrial environments. This qualitative study involved eight informants selected through purposive sampling, all of whom actively integrate Islamic values into their daily work routines. Data were collected through in-depth, semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings indicate that Islamic values contribute to work–life balance through several interconnected themes. Islamic spiritual attitudes such as ṣabr (patience), shukr (gratitude), and tawakkul (trust in God) help employees regulate their emotions and respond more adaptively to work-related stress. Daily worship practices provide psychological stability and support emotional regulation within demanding work contexts. In addition, shared religious values and organizational tolerance toward worship activities foster a sense of social support and collegial solidarity, which further enhances employees’ overall well-being. Overall, the study concludes that Islamic values function as integrated spiritual, emotional, and social resources that assist employees in maintaining balance between work demands and personal well-being. These findings offer a contextualized understanding of how Islamic spirituality operates in industrial settings and contribute to the development of workplace well-being strategies that acknowledge and respect employees’ religious identities.

Abstract

This article examines Agus Sunyoto’s ideas on the distinctiveness of Nusantara Islamic education as articulated through the Pramistara (Pesantren Ramadhan Islam Nusantara) program, which emerges as a response to the challenges of globalization and the Industrial Revolution 4.0. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach through literature review and narrative analysis of Pramistara’s texts, lectures, and documents, this study applies Michel Foucault’s archaeology of knowledge to trace how Sunyoto constructs the discourse of Nusantara Islam across historical, epistemological, and power-related layers that legitimize Pramistara as a continuation of the archipelagic Islamic tradition. In addition, Paulo Freire’s critical pedagogy is used to examine how Pramistara’s educational practices foster dialogical learning, critical consciousness, and socio-spiritual awareness in addressing contemporary issues. The findings indicate that Pramistara is not merely a Ramadan study forum, but a strategic educational space that integrates pesantren traditions, Indonesian historical narratives, Sufism, and global issues such as geopolitics, proxy wars, and cryptocurrency. Through this integrative approach, Agus Sunyoto positions Nusantara Islamic education as a model that balances intellectual rigor with spiritual transformation, while simultaneously reinforcing local identity in the face of global secularizing forces. Foucault’s framework elucidates the knowledge structures that underpin the discourse of Nusantara Islam, whereas Freire’s theory underscores Pramistara’s role in cultivating critical, reflective, and moderate learners. Consequently, Pramistara emerges as an alternative educational model that sustains continuity with tradition while equipping the younger generation to navigate the challenges of a disruptive era.

Abstract

The Mappasikarawa tradition is an important procession in the traditional marriage ceremony of the Bugis Bone community that continues to be practiced today. However, it often raises debates regarding its compatibility with the principles of Islamic law. On the one hand, this tradition is viewed as an expression of religious culture; on the other hand, it is suspected of containing non-sharia elements that may contradict the principle of monotheism. This study aims to analyze the tension between the practice of Mappasikarawa and Islamic legal norms by situating it within the contextual framework of Islamic law. The research employs a qualitative descriptive approach using a case study method. Data were collected through field observations, in-depth interviews with traditional and religious leaders, and a review of classical and contemporary fiqh literature. The analysis is conducted using the concepts of ʿurf and maqāṣid al-sharīʿah to assess the boundary between cultural accommodation and normative violation. The findings indicate that Mappasikarawa consists of several elements, including the symbolic act of touch, the role of the botting host as a mediator of prayers, and the social legitimacy granted by the community, all of which have undergone a process of Islamic reinterpretation. These elements can be categorized as ʿurf ṣaḥīḥ as long as they are free from mystical elements and beliefs that contradict Islamic law. These findings confirm that Islamic law operates through a dynamic mechanism of negotiation and cultural adaptation while maintaining its normative principles.

Abstract

The rapid diffusion of algorithmic decision making in management has reshaped how organizations evaluate employees, allocate resources, and exercise managerial authority. While such systems promise efficiency and objectivity, growing evidence shows that they also generate serious epistemological, ethical, and governance challenges. This paper aims to critically examine algorithmic decision making in management from an Islamic ethical and philosophical perspective, focusing on its epistemological, ontological, and axiological implications. Using a qualitative and conceptual research design, the study applies interpretive and normative analysis to major theories in management, artificial intelligence ethics, and Islamic moral philosophy. The results indicate that algorithmic decision making is built on epistemic assumptions that overstate objectivity, ontological ambiguities that risk displacing human moral agency, and axiological limitations that undermine justice, accountability, and human dignity. Drawing on Islamic ethical principles, particularly maqāṣid al-sharīʿah, justice (ʿadl), and trust (amanah), the study proposes a normative framework that re-centers human responsibility and ethical governance in the use of algorithmic systems. In conclusion, algorithmic decision making should be treated as a decision-support mechanism rather than an autonomous authority, and its legitimacy in management depends on its alignment with Islamic ethical values and the preservation of human moral agency.
