Abstract

Damages of building construction due to termite attacks have caused high economic losses and therefore, efforts are continuously developed to overcome the serious problem. Baiting system is one way to control termite attacks as it consists of acceptable termite food sources, combined with a slow-acting substance lethal to termites. This study was conducted to produce termite bait materials from organic waste mixtures and evaluate its effectiveness against termite attacks in the field. The termite baits were produced by mixing paper, cardboard, and degraded pine wood, combined with leaves of Melaleuca leucadendron Linn assumed to be toxic to termites. Tapioca starch was used as glue and added to the organic materials mixture before pressed at room temperature with the target density of 1.0 g/cm3. The produced baits were placed in the field with signs of heavy attacks of termites, Coptotermes sp., and observed every three days for the termite elimination. Results showed that the bait formulation enables to significantly eliminate the termite attacks with high attractant properties. However, its effectiveness was still lower than the commercial bait due to its high capacity of water absorption, indicating the importance of further research on its mixture and glue formulation.

Abstract

The intensive use of Eboni has caused a decrease of its natural population which has also contributed to the future loss of genetic potencies. Preservation efforts could only be conducted if the actual potencies of the stand and its environmental conditions were recognized. A study on stand and regeneration potencies as well as its soil characteristics is needed as a basic in management aplication for the increase of genetic potencies. This study used a systematic sampling survey method and laboratory analysis. The study aims to identify tree potencies and regeneration of Eboni Makassar as well as its soil characteristics under the stand. The results are expected to provide a description on Eboni Makassar potencies and its management efforts. It was found from the study that the potency of Eboni was 5.013 m3/ha with minimum and maximum estimated volumes of 3.163 m3/ha and 6.863 m3/ha, respectively. Eboni was naturally regenerated better in >40% slope category. Keywords: Eboni, Potencies and Regeneration, Various Slope

Abstract

Morphology and anatomy characteristics often used to identify ectomycorrhizal fungi. We used three Scleroderma spp. (Scleroderma columnare, S. dictyosporum), and S. sinnamariense) and inoculated to Shorea pinanga, Pinus merkusii, and Gnetum gnemon. After 6,8, and 10 months, each root tips were collected to determined hyphae colour, branching pattern, clamp-connection, hartig net and mantle. This result revealed that S. sinnamariense did not form association with S. pinanga and P. merkusii but form association with G. gnemon. On the other hand, S. columnare and S. dictyosporum could form association with all the host plants. S. columnare and S. dictyosporum formed white hyphae while S. sinnamariense formed yellow hyphae with monopodial branching pattern. The depth of hartig net and mantle was increased by timed. Abstract

Many Mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla King.) is used as the main tree in the area or the forestry industry plans. If the tree is planted monoculture, the mahogany stand has become highly vulnerable to pest and diseases, because monoculture tree plantations are an abundant food source for both organisms. This study aims to determine the types of fungi that attacking and cause disease in plant parts mahogany. The result showed that there are ten species of fungi that attack mahogany. Seven of them have been identified while the other cannot be identified. Fungi are attacked or negative associations in the roots, stem, leaves and fruits of plant mahogany. The seven species of fungi are Rhizopus arrhizus Fischer; Mucor racemosus Fres; Mycgone rosea Link; Absidia corymbifera (Cohn.) Sacc and Trotter; Monilia sitophila (Mont.) Sacc; Cladosporium spharospermeum Penzig; and Myrothecium verrucaria (Orig.). Fungi that attack the roots of the tree are A. corymbifera (Cohn.) Sacc and C. spharospermeum Penzig. M. rosea Link and M. sitophila (Mont.) Sacc attacking the leaf. R. arrhizus Fischer and M. verrucaria (Orig.) attacks the stems of trees while Mucor racemosus Fres. Attacking the fruit of mahogany. Fungi that cannot be identified are a fungus that attacks the stems and leaves. Key words: Switenia macrophylla King, Fungi

Abstract

Decentralization has been regarded as a best way to utilize natural resources for local people benefit and to distribute development results fairly through out of entirely of the country. However, experience has shown that in some cases decentralization in forest management policy was not implemented by local authorities in balancing way of both utilization and conservation. On the other hand, local government complained that even though power transfer to local authority has been implemented since the Indonesian reform politic, central government is still maintaining control over the forest management policy. This article describes decentralization experiences of forest management policy in South Sulawesi. Their impacts followed by some suggestions are also outlined. Abstract

For optimum utilization of coconut wood, there are necessity to improve the quality of the wood caused by higroscopicity, low dimensional stability, and extreme variability of dimension in lateral direction. The purpose of the research were to analyze the characteristics of coconut wood that had been treated by heating and densification. The treatment consist of one or two hours heating, one hour heating combined to 10 or 20% densification, two hours heating combined to 10 or 20% densification. Temperature that applied for all specimen were 180 oC. The research results are as follows: (1) Heating treatment combined to densification effective to reduce higroscopicity of coconut wood, (2) Heating treatment for two hours are suffice as pretreatment to densify the soft part of coconut wood for 20%, (3) Dimensional stability of coconut wood may improve using heating combined to densification treatments that indicated by decreasing rate of dimensional change, (4) Heating and densification treatment effective to improve the hardness of soft part coconut wood. Abstract

The plant diversity using shanon index and the farmer income level were investigated in this study. This information is very important to contribute some improvement of agroforestry pattern related to the farmer welfare and the ecological productivity in upperstream Minraleng Sub Watershed. Results show that the diversity index of mix public forest was higher than the other patterns, eventhough it has a lower contribution compared to paddyfield. Paddyfield and unirigated-land have a higher contribution to farmer income, but they have lower diversity indexes. In contrast, candlenut monoculture and mix garden have higher diversity indexes and lower contribution to farmer income. A plant diversification under candlenut stands and an economical plant intensification on mix garden were needed to increase the farmer income and the diversity of economic plants. Key words: Diversity index, farmer income, agroforestry, Minraleng Sub Watershed References

Abstract

The fiber of sugar-palm tree Arenga pinnata Merr., locally known as ijuk, is frequently harvested after the tree age of 5 years and traditionally used as covering to protect ground-contact wood construction materials against organism attack, particularly subterranean termites. The effectiveness of sufar-palm tree fiber extract of marketed formation using acetone and and hexane againts subterannean termites (Coptotermes sp.) has been observed. The results showed that mortality of termite after 2 weeks is 100% on samples given the sugar-palm tree fiber extract, compared with the mortality of controls (without sugar-palm tree fiber extract) is 7,07% after 3 weeks. The consumption rate of termites opposited with the mortality value, due to the existence of bioactive components or chemical compounds having inhibitor or toxic against termites activities. Abstract

The objective of this research is to establish the most suitable tree diameter distribution model for five tree species on tropical rain forest in Mamuju District. This research was conducted on two locations. The 50 square plots were sampled systematically for seedling, sapling, pole and tree measurements of bintangur, jambu-jambu, lada-lada, matoa and nyatoh species. The distance among plots was 50 m. Variables to be measured were stem number of seedlings to trees and tree diameter at breast height (1,3 m) of saplings to trees. About 70% of the data were used to establish the best model, the rest of 30% were used to validate the model. Models to be analyzed were fourth-order semi-logarithmic transformed polynomial function, Weibull density function and monotonic decreasing Weibull function. The results show that the five tree species have a similar diameter distribution pattern. The shape of this distribution is the typical of uneven-aged stand distribution on natural forest, namely reversed J shape. The most suitable model for five species is second-order semi-logarithmic transformed polynomial function. Key words: model, diameter distribution, natural forest, uneven-aged stand.
