Abstract

This study examined the effect of mathematics language on students interest in statistics in senior secondary school. The study employed quasi-experimental design of non-randomized pretest posttest control group type. Two research questions and two hypotheses guided the study. The sample of this study consisted of 250 Senior Secondary Two (SS2) students chosen out of the target population of 1250 students in all the 10-government grant aided secondary schools in Abuja Municipal Area Council. The sample comprised 125 male and 125 female students.  In each of the four sampled secondary schools, intact classes were used. Two sets of lesson plans on the topics under study were developed for the experimental and control groups respectively. Data were collected using Statistics Interest Inventory (SII). Research questions were answered using means and standard deviations while T-test was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 alpha level of significance. The reliability coefficient is 0.88. From the research work, it was found out that the mathematical language when properly used improves students interest in Statistics and that gender has no significance difference in achievement. The study recommends among others that mathematics teachers should use the mathematical language instruction in teaching Statistics and other topics in mathematics to enhance students interest.

Abstract

Learning in the 21st century requires a learning innovation, especially in science and environmental learning. That's because solving various environmental problems requires students' abilities, one of which is Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). The purpose of this research was to develop a learning model called ITA (Identify problems, Think and Write, Analysis and Argumentation). This research was conducted in March 2020. The method used in this research was research and development. Validation was carried out for 11 validators via Google form (online media), consisting of 5 learning experts and 6 science teachers. The results of the study showed that the ITA learning model was categorized as very valid with an average score of 3.52 which could be interpreted as an ITA learning model suitable for use in science and environmental learning. Other innovations to support the implementation of the ITA learning model can be developed to strengthen the use of the ITA learning model. This study concludes that the ITA learning model is suitable for use in science and environmental learning.

Abstract

EFL education shifts from teaching language core competences into promoting communicative competence and developing multiliteracies pedagogy. Through this learning mode, EFL learners can develop language, interpersonal communication, inter-cultural understanding as well as life learning skills. Group work learning assisted by technology use in EFL classroom is one of many approaches to equip EFL learners with such skills. During the process of learning in groups, EFL students experience and potentially learn social skills through their group dynamics. This study aims to explore group dynamic aspects in EFL learning: what the students experience and learn. The study adopts qualitative research methods. The data are collected through students narrative texts revealing their experiences in working in groups to create video. The study finds that in accomplishing group tasks, the students are learning some aspects. The first is the identification process, in which they are aligning themselves to the shared identity, emotion, goals, character of groups (self to group identification) as well as group to self identification. The second aspect is the students are learning cooperatively and collaboratively in team development process. The third aspect is learning leadership and organizational management, in which they are learning structure, norms, rules and social system in group.

Abstract

Genggong performance art is a form of art in Batuan Village. Its existence in the midst of community life is closely related to the tourism industry. Its presence is currently increasingly squeezed by the Golbal culture which is not only present from modern (calcic) traditional arts but also contemporary culture. If it is left out it is not impossible that Genggong art will disappear. It can also erase the local cultural identity in Batuan Village. Efforts to optimize Genggong's art at this time are a problem. This not only arises because of internal problems from the Genggong actors themselves, but also externally the network that was cut off was often caused by factors playing in it. The importance of making this Genggong art present in Batuan is none other than the icon of the Batuan Culture village which has become a tourist village, worth fighting for given that cultural richness is a hallmark of genius society. In addition to optimizing the Genggong art, it has the opportunity to be a more useful touristic spectacle. The impact of the Genggong art problem in Batuan Village will also be a pilot project for the arts of the same fortune in the global era. In addition, financially the actors involved in it feel they have the opportunity to earn a fortune and protection. This study uses a cultural study approach that is more focused on solving problems to raise the issue of marginalization with cultural theories. It seems that through qualitative methods explanations can find a deeper analysis. Resolving the Genggong art problem can be a model for other traditional arts that also suffer a similar fate. The findings of this study at least give rise to a new awareness to jointly provide a way out of traditional Balinese art so that it can be enjoyed more broadly over time.
