Journal Albion Journal of English Literature, Language, and Culture. Journal Albion : Journal of English Literature, Language and Culture with registered number e-ISSN 2657-0696 invites submission of studies co-authored by faculty, students, and or community partners in the areas of English literature, linguistic, and culture. Journal Albion: Journal of English Literature, Language and Culture accepts articles in any literary related subjects and any research methodology that meet the standards established for publication in the journal The articles must be written in English. Journal Albion : Journal of English Literature, Language and Culture is published twice a year in April and October by The Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities Pakuan University. It has been published biannually since January 2019. Any submitted paper will be reviewed by reviewers. The review process employs a double-blind review that the reviewer does not know the identity of the author, and the author does not know the identity of the reviewers.

The title of this research is "The Effect of Changes in the Main Character’s Personality towards Social Setting in the Novel The Giver by Lois Lowry'". The aim of this research is to point out that personality changes can have an impact on environment. Analysis descriptive method and library research are the method and technique used in conducting this research. The result of this study show that Jonas has experienced change after he receives training as The Receiver and feels that something has gone wrong with the place called The Community. Memories of the beauty of the past makes him realize that the ritual called “release” was actually an assassination. In the end, these influences made Jonas leave The Community to save his environment and to return it back to normal.Keywords : social background; psychology.

Cultural conflict can occur because the diversity of cultures, religions, and races. When we refuse to learn about other cultures, stereotype, misinterpretation and tendency to change attitudes toward other ethnicity might happen. The purposes of this thesis is to explore the cultural conflict and the settlement in Kevin Kwan’s novel Crazy Rich Asian. This novel presents Rachel Chu and Nicholas Young as the central character. The research is conducted by means of descriptive analysis method. The results shows that the cultural conflicts experienced by Rachel and Nick were caused by stereotypes, misunderstandings, ethnocentrism and materialism, a high sense of selfishness that made the conflict continue without any resolution.Keywords: Crazy Rich Asian; Cultural Conflict; Culture.

Eat Pray Love novel by Elizabeth Gilberth tells the story of a woman's journey to herself in three countries over a period of one year. There are also countries visited are Italy, India and Indonesia. Her visit to the three countries was in order to find a balance in her life. This is evident from the interaction between the characters and the conflicts contained in the novel. The journey to the Italian state to explore the arts of fun, deepen the art of meditation and devotion in the country of India and balance the two in Bali Indonesia. Feminist ideology is seen in the main character of the novel as well as some other female figures mentioned in Elizabeth's novel taking the greatest step in her life to end her marriage and find her own life and happiness as a woman. In this novel also told a figure Indian girl named Tulsi who chose to continue his education in the middle of an environment that opposed women to have high education. The occurrence of language variation is not only caused by homogeneous speakers but also because of diverse social interactions. This diversity will increase if the language is used by many speakers, because guidelines for social interaction is needed. This research discusses components of speech event, domain and the use of language variations of the main character in the movie Black Panther (2018). The purpose of this research is to identify the language variations used by the main character, and to show that the components of speech event which support the choice of the language variations. Using the descriptive analysis, and the proficient free listening techniques, the research yields to identify speech variations according to Martin Joss. The most frequently used of language variations by the main character is the casual style. The most scarcely language variations used are the intimate style and the consultative style. It can be proven that the component of speech event and domain strongly supports the use of the language variations.Keywords: components of events; domain; language variations; main character.

This study is aimed to identify the kinds of presupposition and the triggers used by the characters in the movie Gifted. It is also aimed to interpret the implicit meaning in them and to describe the common ground between the speakers and the listeners. This study is a qualitative research using descriptive analysis method. The data are collected by using uninvolved observation and note-taking technique. The analysis result shows that there are 54 data of presupposition usages and common ground. According to the analysis, presupposition and common ground commonly appear more in daily communication caused by the triggers of implicit assumption, the close relationship between the speakers and the listeners, and the community they are attending.Keywords: common ground; presupposition;character.

Film has been the means of communication. In addition, it has been recognized to be mediated quasi-interaction which shows a monological manner in term of the communication between the contents and the audience. It also can portray the representation of a certain culture in a particular country, specifically Indonesia. In addition to the local culture, Sundanese is the second ethnic majority that mostly dwell in the province of West Java. What is more, the ethnicity still shows rare portrayals on film since there are not many movies that incorporate the Sundanese culture into their stories. Rocker Balik Kampung (2018) by Uli Rahman is one of the films that integrates Sundanese culture to be the big theme. It focuses on a Sundanese rocker who has successfully made a living in the metropolitan city. Moreover, the chief of his village sends a messenger to look for him and bring him back to the village since he is going to get promoted to become the next chief in the village. Furthermore, he experiences dilemmas since he needs to encounter some protests from the notable village elder. This research was aimed at investigating Sundanese values and ideology on Rocker Balik Kampung (2018) by Uli Rahman. The research used qualitative approach through semiotics analysis by Roland Barthes. The analysis utilized denotation and connotation level of signs through various scenes on the film. The data collection technique was done using document analysis. The main topic in this research is gender discrimination which is based on the study of the main character in Bina Shah's Before She Sleeps. This research process involves the whole story, intrinsic elements: characters and characterizations, settings, and conflicts, as well as extrinsic elements: gender discrimination, patriarchy systems, and power relations. This qualitative research is supported by descriptive analysis methods and literature study techniques which result in findings that politicized gender disparities are the cause of gender discrimination. The main character, Sabine, experiences several forms of gender discrimination namely limited access to education and not allowed to work. Her only choice is to be a good housewife with three to five husbands, and to bear as many children as possible. The purpose of this research is to analyze types and functions of satire used in two of Ronny Chieng’s stand-up comedy performances; America Needs More Asians (2019) and Everything’s Stupid (2020). This study uses descriptive qualitative method with observation and note-taking technique. The analysis show that the types of satire found in the utterances of Ronny Chieng are; satire (15), cynicism (7), sarcasm (3), and innuendo (2). The satire functions as ridiculing of thoughts and ideas, sarcasm, laughing at ideas and habits and understating facts. Satire is used in the stand-up comedy as a critic, specifically for Caucasians, African Americans and Asians.Keywords: satire, type and function, stand-up comedy

The research "Correlation between The Elements of Racism with Spades Card Game in the Poem by Terrance Hayes “We Should Make a Documentary about Spades” " aims to find the correlation between the Spades game and the problem of racism in the studied poetry. This research uses descriptive methods and qualitative approaches to find correlations that have been mentioned previously. This study shows in several lines, the problem of racism experienced by the black race is described by the Spades card game. This study shows that the use of the Spades card game in the poetry is closely related to slavery during colonialism and the problem of discrimination against the black race during The Great Depression. The connection between the racial issues in these two periods with the Spades card game is in the connotation of the word Spades itself which is related to slavery that occurred during the colonial period and the Spades card game which is exclusive to the black race.Keywords: Spades; Racism; Correlation; Discrimination

The objectives of this research are to identify the types and strategies in translating idioms used in Paula Hawkins' novel The Girl on the Train. The research methodology applied isdescriptive qualitative.The results show that the types of idioms (O’Dell and McCarthy 2010)found in the novel are similes, binomials, proverbs, euphemisms, cliché, and fixed statement and other language. Using the theory by Baker (2011), the idioms in the novel are mainly translated using the strategy; translation by phrase. Other strategies that are also applied are using idioms of similar meanings but dissimilar forms, using idioms of singular and form, translating by omission of entire idioms, and borrowing the source language.
