Abstract

Water is the element of life that is essential for survival. Along with the rapid growth of the human being, the demand for water increases. Now this, many water sources are contaminated, clean one of the impacts that cause pollution is that there is content of Fe in the water. Fe is the secondary contaminants that become problems in the provision of clean water is especially groundwater. The content of Fe exceeds quality raw processing must be done first before used to clean water. This research aims to analyze Fe levels before and after filtration is done using ceramic membrane media with a thickness of 5 cm and 7 cm in well water. This research is experimental research, using design research True Experiment with form One Group Pretest-Posttest. The object of this research that is well water containing Fe levels with a total of 32 Research sample sample. Further data obtained were analyzed using analytical test in Paired-Samples T Test. The results showed that the ceramic membrane filter media thickness 5 cm and 7 cm is capable of lowering the average rate of 8.11 Fe mg/l be 5.9 mg/l and 3.6 mg/l. The results of statistical tests using Paired T-test Test earned the result that there is a difference Fe levels before and after treatment using ceramic membrane filter media with variations in the thickness of 5 cm and 7 cm.The conclusion of this research is the ceramic membrane thickness 7 cm has the difference decreased most in lowering levels of Fe on well water. It is recommended to increase the creativity in applying appropriate technology in filtration method. Keywords: water well, levels of Fe, ceramic membranes

Abstract

Health workers who handle medical waste are at risk of the diseases faced because of germs from the skin infections, anthrax, meningitis, dengue, hepatitis A, Hepatitis B and C. The bacteria present in the blood are transmitted through blood. The highest risk of being infected by these diseases is when impaled by sharp or pointed object of the waste because it can damage the skin. The purpose of this study was to determine the behavior of CS officers (Cleaning Service) and the handling of medical waste in Dr. Soetomo hospital. This is a descriptive research with cross sectional approach. The collection of data was carried out through observation and interviews. The sample was 75 CS officers. Data were analyzed descriptively with table analysis. The results showed that Cleaning Services’ level of knowledge at Dr. Soetomo Hospital on handling medical waste with "Good" criteria was 90.8%. The CS attitude with "good" criteria was 88% and poor was 5.3%. CS’s behavior with "Good" criteria was 92% and "poor" was 6.7%. It can be concluded that of 75 Cleaning Service at Hospital Dr. Soetomo, most of them were well behaved and only a small proportion have poor behavior. The handling of medical waste in Dr. Soetomo hospital has been qualified in accordance with Kepmenkes No 1204 of 2004. It is recommended to conduct counseling on the importance of the use of personal protective equipment and the dangers of medical waste. Abstract

Sulfur dioxide is a major constituent of exhaust gas generated by diesel engines. The mainimpact of SOx (S02 and S03) contaminant is the generation of very sharp odor, the eventualoccurrence of corrosive acid rain, where as to humans such contaminants may cause irritation to eyes, skin and repiratory systems, and may prove to b~ fatal. The final produeNtf chemical reaction, H2S04 may cause corrosiveness, acid rain, and irritationto the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract, and may even be fatal, therefore it is deemed necessary toinitiate control of exhaust emissions from diesel engines. One of the many methods is the use of asaturated solution of lime water (CaOH2)as absorbent to reduce the said emissions. The purpose of this study was to determine the capacity of a saturated aqueous solution of limeor Ca (OH) 2 in lowering the levels of S02 in the flue gas emission from diesel engines (mobilesources). This is a pre-experimental study using One Group Pre-PostTest Design, this study was carriedout by conducting measurements on 6 samples of diesel engine exhaust emissions where 2 (two)measurements were done before and 4 (four) samples after passing through saturated lime waterabsorbent (CaOH2). Duration of sampling ranged between 20 -25 minutes. The results indicated the average levels of SOx before passing through saturated lime water(CaOH2) was 117,355 mg/m3 and the mean level of S02 after passing through a saturated lime waterwas 79,90 mg/m3. There was a decline in the average levels of S02 at a value of 37,455 mgr/m3 orby 31,90%This study concluded, that the lime water (CaOH2)solution was able to reduce the level of S02in exhaust emissions of a diesel engines by 37,455 mgr/m3 or 31,90%.It is suggested to owners of diesel engine motor vehicles to always perform proper maintenanceof their vehicles, and citizens (especially those living on the outskirt of a highway), in order to helppreserving the environment, are expected to plant trees and various other plants that can absorbcontaminants or can be used as indicators of pollution by motor vehicle exhaust emissions. The studyalso recommended to study other kinds of pollutant gase

Abstract

Foodstuff constitutes any things come from biological resources and water, bothprocessed and unprocessed. One of those processed foods is chicken nugget. Nugget is aprocessedanimal product that is included in the category of easily damaged by microorganisms. Therefore, in order obtain the desired quality of food, the manufacturers often use a forbiddenadditional material such as borax that is commonly used in glass, fungicide, herbicide andinsecticide industries. This study is a descriptive type of study with cross sectional approach that is aimed tolearn about borax content in labeled and bulk chicken nuggets sold at tradisional markets ofSurabaya. The study is located at 10 traditional markets managed by PD Pasar Surya and 10markets managed individually. The result of study indicates that from the organoleptic test of 12 samples of labeledchicken nugget, 4 samples (33,3%) are hard and rubbery, 3 sampel (25%) do not have thenatural aroma of chicken meat, 6 samples (50%) have duller color and 2 samples (16,6%) haveall those three characteristics. Meanwhile, among 20 sampel of bulk chicken nugget, 14samples (70%) are hard and rubbery, 14 samples (70%) do not have the natural aroma ofchicken meat, 7 samples (35%) have duller color, and 6 samples (30%) have all those threecharacteristics. However, such an organoleptic test does not fully indicate the existence ofborax. A qualitative laboratory test by means of Turmeric Yellow PaperTest then is required. Itis found in the laboratory examination that 3 samples (25%) out of 12 samples of labeledchicken nugget positively contain borax and 7 samples (35%) out of 20 samples of bulk chickennugget positively contain borax. The market manager should cooperate with the relevant service to perform a periodicfood control. The public needs to learn about the characteristics of nugget with borax. Otherresearchers are wished to do a qualitative test of borax content on other food products or anexperiment to maintain the quality of nugget with no dangerous chemical such as borax. Keywords: Borax, labeled chicken nugget, bulk chicke
