Abstract

Abstract

This study investigates the nature and dynamics of land-related conflicts in the Hamer, Nyangatom, and Dassanech communities of South Omo, Ethiopia, with a specific emphasis on conflict management mechanisms and the growing impact of economic pressure and climate change. Employing a qualitative case study design, the research reveals that land disputes remain a persistent threat to community cohesion, socio-economic development, and intergroup relations. These conflicts are largely driven by competing claims over scarce natural resources—including grazing land, water points, and agricultural land—resources which have become increasingly limited due to prolonged droughts and climate variability. At the core of the disputes lies a tension between exclusive resource control and equitable resource sharing. The transboundary nature of some resource competitions further exacerbates the conflict. Rather than showing signs of resolution, these conflicts have evolved into cyclical and seasonal patterns of violence. The findings suggest that strengthening justice systems, institutional frameworks for conflict resolution, and community-based peacebuilding initiatives—particularly those integrating climate adaptation, early warning systems, and livelihood diversification—are critical to mitigating conflict and fostering long-term stability in the region.

Abstract

Abstrak: One of the primary challenges faced by educators is how to effectively motivate students to develop a genuine interest in what they are learning, which in turn significantly influences their academic performance. A strategic approach to address this issue involves the use of appropriate and contextually relevant instructional media that align with students’ learning needs. This study seeks to offer a novel perspective on enhancing student motivation and learning outcomes by integrating Wordwall interactive media with the Talking Stick method in a comprehensive instructional framework. Employing a quasi-experimental design with nonequivalent control groups, the study examines the effectiveness of this integrated approach. The findings indicate that students in the experimental group exhibited notable improvements in both academic achievement and motivational indices. Statistical analysis using SPSS revealed a non-significant difference in learning outcomes (Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) = 1.000, p > 0.05), while a significant difference was observed in motivation levels, as indicated by Levene’s test (p = 0.000, p < 0.05), suggesting a substantial impact on students’ motivational engagement. These results underscore the pedagogical potential of combining Wordwall interactive media with the Talking Stick method to effectively enhance both motivation and academic performance among eleventh-grade students in Islamic Religious Education, particularly in topics related to tolerance and the preservation of human life.

Abstract

Abstract: This study examines the strategic management of Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) in upper secondary schools through an interpretive qualitative approach. Data were collected via semi-structured interviews with school principals, teachers, and IT staff, and analyzed using NVivo software. The analysis revealed six core themes: visionary leadership, integrated development strategies, the creation of digital learning resources, pedagogical and classroom adaptation, supervisory mechanisms, and technical challenges. Visionary leadership within schools emerged as a critical driver of digital innovation and the cultivation of future-ready skills among both students and educators. The findings underscore the importance of designing VLEs that are responsive to the dynamic pedagogical, technological, and administrative demands of contemporary education systems. This study highlights the need for school leaders to facilitate digital transformation through capacity building and the promotion of a collaborative digital culture. Moreover, the integration of adaptive instructional strategies and real-time monitoring mechanisms within Learning Management Systems (LMS) is shown to significantly enhance instructional quality and learner engagement. The study offers practical implications for educational leaders, policymakers, and practitioners by providing a comprehensive empirical framework for the sustainable development of VLEs that promote equity, innovation, and lifelong learning in the digital era.
