Abstract

Social media allows people to share what they do in the real world through their posts on social media. However, what they present online are not based on reality. Posts on social media increasingly illustrate differences in social status because even though the posts are on the same topic and category, they show different tastes. Through Bourdieu’s thought that tastes are determined by social structure, this study aimed to explore how a person’s consumption, especially traveling, can change due to habitus in social media. Consumption in Bourdieu's explanation is no longer determined by economic factors, but by culture. Cultural practices in technology play a role in changing consumption patterns in society. As a communication process that builds simulations and social space, social media posts create distinctions in society. The narrative method used to understand individuals’ experiences are subjective and interpreted in their world, so they have an objective impact. Interviews were carried out with Indonesian travelers who provided recommendations for their followers who have the same interests in traveling. In addition, the netnography method was carried out to see the meaning of traveling in modern society. This study shows that traveling has become a symbol. This change in traveling consumption provides confirmation for social media as a process of transformation through habitus.

Abstract

Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) in Indonesia, as Islamic educational institutions experiencing significant growth, are now facing complex external challenges, particularly the climate crisis. A limited technical understanding of how ecological values in Islamic teachings can be translated into practice also remains a barrier. This study aims to analyze the role of progressive pesantren in building awareness and collective action to address the climate crisis through religious communication strategies. Using a quantitative approach, this study applies the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to explain how attitudinal factors, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control can shape pro-environmental intentions within the pesantren community. This study tests the classical communication theory of TPB. The study population comprises all components of the pesantren, including students, kiyais, teachers, and stakeholders. More specifically, the population is the pesantren ecosystem in West Java that has implemented environmentally sound practices. The sampling technique employed was simple random sampling, with a population of 391. The sample size was calculated using the Slovin formula, resulting in 198 respondents. Data were collected through a questionnaire distributed directly to the respondents. The data analysis techniques included descriptive analysis and SmartPLS 3 operationalization. The result is an eco-religious amplification model, which empirically shows that religious communication requires mediation through an eco-religious approach, local wisdom, and cognitive reinforcement to transform religious messages into genuine concern about the climate crisis.

Abstract

The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology Regulation No. 07/P/M KOMINFO/3/2007, which marked the beginning of television digitization, compelled people to switch from analog to digital.  The acquisition of a set-top box (STB) was necessary for this relocation.  Due to the lack of STB (television station) coverage, a slum area in Gadukan village, North Surabaya, has trouble viewing television; as a result, they lose their sources of knowledge and amusement.  The flood of information and entertainment around them marginalizes the locals.  Inequality in the slum community will be made worse by this circumstance.  Research on how people feel excluded from enjoyment and information is based on this. The central thesis of the notion of technological determinism is that human existence itself will be shaped by changes in communication methods.  According to Valente's Theory of Innovation Diffusion, social networks can affect the rate and pattern of innovation diffusion; being in the center of the social network and having a large number of social connections tend to be quicker and more efficient.  According to Robert K. Merton's strain theory, imbalance brought on by marginalization increases a person's susceptibility to pressure that results in abnormal behavior. Phenomenological studies were employed as part of the qualitative research methodology.  The findings demonstrate how poor groups' access to information has been marginalized as a result of television's digital migration.  The idea that media technological determinism is a structural tool in poverty has been reinforced by poverty resulting from information marginalization.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the management of internal and external communication in Telkom University's mental health prevention and handling program and to formulate a suitable communication management model to enhance the program’s effectiveness. The research is motivated by the high urgency of mental health issues among students and the need for an integrated communication system between internal stakeholders and students as the primary target. Adopting a qualitative case study approach grounded in constructivist theory, this research employs in-depth interviews with key stakeholders—including the Head of Student Affairs, academic advisors, counselors, and students—followed by thematic analysis using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model. The findings reveal that internal communication has been systematically designed by the Directorate of Student Affairs, Career, and Alumni (Ditmawa) through a hierarchical structure involving the Vice Dean II, heads of student affairs, department heads, academic advisors, and counselors. The main challenges in implementation include limited technical human resources (administrative staff) and the low active engagement of academic advisors. External communication employs a multi-channel approach, utilizing social media, MyTelU, iGracias, and other campus programs. However, its effectiveness is still influenced by students' digital literacy and their initiative in accessing information. The proposed communication management model consists of four stages: planning, implementation, monitoring & feedback, and evaluation. This model emphasizes stakeholder collaboration and the optimization of integrated digital channels to effectively reach students. Theoretically, this study strengthens organizational communication perspectives in the context of mental health in higher education. Practically, the model can serve as a strategic reference for building an adaptive and collaborative communication system.

Abstract

In political contestation, the involvement of candidate spouses in campaigns is becoming an increasingly prominent phenomenon. The participation of candidate wives in political campaigns is not just a companion, but an important strategy in gaining voter support in the 2024 Election. Campaigning is a political strategy to gain public support to achieve political victory. In the 2024 Election process in Indonesia, several candidate wives were actively involved in political campaign events. This study analyzes how political candidate wives describe their roles and involvement in the campaign process through social media. Using Kress and Van Leeuwen's multimodal concept analysis with a qualitative approach, data collection through content in the form of videos and photos, focusing on campaign activities carried out by Fery Farhati, Anies Baswedan's wife, and Siti Atikoh, Ganjar Pranowo's wife, then analyzed using qualitative descriptive analysis techniques. The results first found that the candidate's wife was represented as an active and caring figure through social involvement; Second, the use of visuals in the content plays a role in building the candidate's wife's closeness to the audience; Third, the composition of the image can emphasize their role in the campaign. In conclusion, political candidates' wives in campaigns are often used to build a positive image of political candidates and strengthen political messages by displaying a humanistic side that can attract public sympathy.

Abstract

This research aims to understand the mediamorphosis process in TVRI's transformation from conventional to digital media, with a case study on TVRI Klik broadcast and a focus on TVRI World channel. Data was analysed qualitatively through netnography methods, exploring the dynamics of digital platforms, user preferences, content consumption patterns, and reactions to media changes. The results show that the transformation of TVRI Klik, which began in 2017-2018, marks a significant shift towards more interactive and integrated broadcasting. TVRI World aims to combine international broadcasts with local content. Despite facing technical challenges, co-operation with social media platforms and streaming technologies helped increase visibility and audience engagement. This transformation shows how TVRI can adapt to the digital age, provide more diverse and flexible content, and strengthen its role as an educative and informative public television.

Abstract

Crises in the public service sector not only require a technical handling strategy, but also include responsive and accountable communication aspects. This study aims to analyze the public communication strategy by PLN UID Bali in responding to the blackout incident that occurred on May 2, 2025. The incident resulted in a mass power outage for nearly twelve hours in most areas of Bali. The research method used a qualitative approach and a case study design. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with PLN UID Bali Public Relations and documentation of official PLN UID Bali social media uploads. The study's findings show that applying Situational Crisis Communication Theory (SCCT), PLN UID Bali adaptively manages the flow of information and public perception by combining four main strategies: deny, diminish, rebuild, and reinforce. The study also found that time is a crucial element in crisis communication. The speed of conveying valid information can suppress the potential to escalate public unrest. For this reason, updates to crisis communication SOPs have begun to be carried out, including planning to use digital-based monitoring devices to map public perception in real-time. In general, the success of crisis handling by PLN UID Bali depends not only on the technical aspects of service recovery but also on the effectiveness of public communication built on the principles of openness, empathy, and consistency.

Abstract

Social media has changed how reporters do their jobs. At first, people used social media to talk to each other and make friends. Social media has replaced radio, newspapers, television, and online news sites as the main way people get their news. This change worries professional journalists because it could make information less accurate, take away editorial control, and change the values of journalism. This study aims to investigate Indonesian journalists' views on the prevalence of social media within the media ecosystem and its effects on journalistic quality. This research utilizes a constructivist framework, incorporating qualitative methodologies and case studies. The study's findings indicate that (1) the evolution of media identity, once a bastion of truth, has transitioned to social media regulated by algorithms; (2) audiences exhibit enhanced autonomy while still being susceptible to deficiencies in information literacy; and (3) digital algorithms now profoundly affect the audience's media experience, necessitating a reevaluation and redefinition of media professionalism in Indonesia.

Abstract

I argue that audiovisual commercials that make references or incorporate portions of animated films, games, and live actions could be goggled from the perspectives of hallmark events. Through hallmark events, I argue that ones can reveal the strategies of incorporating events from the other audiovisual products into audiovisual commercials to make them narratively natural. I call these strategies hallmarking. To prove that hallmarking strategies are existent in these distinctive commercials, I employed the theories of hallmark events by Getz, Svensson, Peterssen, and Gunnervall, reference theory by Purnomo et al., the theory of television commercials as short film arts by Rhodes and Singer, and narrative negotiation by Kraus. Investigating twenty commercials ranging from animated films, games, and live actions, I argue that hallmark events could be employed to goggle how commercials incorporate animated films, games, and live actions – a phenomenon that I call hallmarking. I also argue that hallmarking has two functions namely momentum and ludic functions. These functions are delivered through three strategies of hallmarking namely matchmarking, touchmarking, and footmarking. These strategies could be employed as a guide or consideration in referencing, blending, or incorporating events in animated films, games, or live actions into audiovisual commercials.

Abstract

The substance abuse epidemic among adolescents is a social problem that necessitates a proactive approach that engages adolescents in the process of prevention. The objective of this study is to investigate the participatory role of adolescents in designing visual advocacy campaign media to prevent drug abuse, while also examining how this process can strengthen their social resilience. Utilizing a Participatory Action Research (PAR) framework, this study engaged adolescents aged 13–16 years in a series of workshops that fostered their involvement in the planning, production, and reflection on the campaign media. The results of the study indicate that the active involvement of adolescents in the process of creating advocacy media contributes to the strengthening of social values such as self-regulation, assertiveness, and the ability to build social support networks. In addition to producing relevant and contextual messages, this process also serves as a form of social education that empowers adolescents as agents of change. The present study lends further credence to the notion that participation-based campaign strategies and visual media have proven effective in the social education of adolescents, particularly with regard to the prevention of substance abuse.
