Abstract

Abstract The development of technology has had a significant impact on visual communication, including the use of animation as a medium for delivering social messages. Animation today is not only a form of entertainment, but also a platform for presenting narratives that are touching and reflective. One important element in animation is character design, which serves not only as a visual attraction but also as a medium for conveying emotion and addressing current social issues. This study aims to design characters for the short animation Breaking Barriers, which explores the importance of self-love, self-acceptance, and appreciating differences. The design process is based on the Design Thinking model by Ambrose & Harris, which includes seven stages: Define, Research, Ideate, Prototype, Select, Implement, and Learn. The research phase involved literature review, observation, and interviews with a source experienced in illustration and character design to help contextualize the issue and guide the design direction. The characters were developed using an anthropomorphic approach and chibi illustration style to build emotional connection with the audience, while being expressed symbolically and expressively. The final character designs were applied to a short animation and promotional poster, and evaluated through a Google Form questionnaire involving 74 respondents. The results show that the characters successfully convey social messages in a way that is visually appealing, emotionally resonant, and relevant to today's younger audiences.

Abstract

MBKM offers the Pertukaran Mahasiswa Merdeka (PMM) program, which aims to enhance national identity and promote unity through cross-cultural interaction. One of the activities included in PMM is the Modul Nusantara, which allows inbound UPI students to explore the history of the establishment of the Gedung Sate Museum. The PMM 4 Inbound UPI students' exploration of the historical traces of Gedung Sate is not only an academic development project but also a meaningful contribution to the preservation and understanding of Indonesia's cultural heritage. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach, collecting data through observation, documentation, and literature review. The study's results were supported by references from relevant literature, including books and scientific journal articles. The history of Gedung Sate is explained, particularly regarding the integration of various international architectural elements during the construction process. Gedung Sate is a Dutch colonial architectural heritage that was constructed between 1920 and 1924. It incorporates traditional Indonesian elements and Western construction techniques. The history, various ornaments, and architectural styles of Gedung Sate are important for PMM 4 Inbound UPI students to understand and experience.

Abstract

The limitation of shared activities in public spaces during the New Normal period requires flexible, multi-functional furniture that can be applied in public spaces. Outdoor modular furniture that can be flexibly modified to avoid spreading the virus through surfaces is required to add value to the public outdoor facility. Outdoor modular furniture with cellular lightweight concrete (CLC) as its material has been developed to be used in public space sitting areas. The modular furniture produced from this study can function as a sitting, playing and working facility with various arrangements in its geometrical form. The furniture can be used by adult users and children with the dimensions that refer to both variants of the user. The design had been made into a 1:1 scale prototype to produce compositions that can be used by adults and children for various activity. The prototype had also been tested for two years in outdoor public facilities. The test results showed that it is necessary to improve the material weight, give more rounded corners, improve the finishing as well as the construction process.
