Abstract

Indonesia is a multicultural country. One region has a different topography with other regions so that the culture formed in each region is different. Culture is not something that is formed suddenly, but from a learning process which is then passed down from generation to generation. Ponorogo, known as the City of Reog, has a tradition called Grebeg Suro. Grebeg Suro is a tradition of celebrating the Islamic new year, namely 1 Muharram or 1 Suro on the Javanese calendar. This tradition is held in the form of a folk party. The purpose of this research is to analyze the Grebeg Suro tradition through the perspective of Max Weber's theory of action. This research is a type of qualitative research using the interview method to obtain primary sources and literature studies as secondary sources. The informants interviewed were natives of Ponorogo who had witnessed or participated directly in the Grebeg Suro tradition. The literature used is in the form of articles published in journals and book. From the research results obtained, it can be seen that Weber divides social action into four types, including (1) instrumental rational action; (2) value rational action; (3) traditional actions; and (4) affective action. The Grebeg Suro tradition contains three of the four types of social action. First, value rational actions represented by activities based on religious values, such as tadarus or simaan Al- Qur'an, istighosah, praying together, to Buceng Porak. Second, the traditional actions shown by the Bedhol Pusaka ritual and the Larungan Doa at Telaga Ngebel. Finally, the affective action is marked by a feast or salvation event that aims to share sustenance with others.

Abstract

Instagram is a medium for sharing images which is used by a large number of users in Indonesia. Viewed from a cultural perspective, filters are a driving force in the mechanism of social relations in the Instagram application. Teenagers and young adults use filters in the objects of their posts as an effort to create images in cyberspace. This artificial engineering helps teenage users to construct a perfect image according to the standards of their social circle. Related to the many variations of filters that can be used on Instagram, this study wants to map the types of filters used by teenagers in their uploaded selfies on Instagram. This field research was conducted to obtain qualitative data regarding the use of filters in selfie uploads involving two groups of adolescents aged 12- 13 years and adolescents aged 14-15 years. The data were taken through FGD with two groups of informants separately so that the data obtained were complete, accurate, and objective. The results of the study show that the dominant use of filters are in the categories: (1) aesthetic, (2) Asian, (3) animation. The filters function to maintain relation within the circle and also to provide access to another circle , as well as to provide a mediation for them to interact among the teenagers.

Abstract

This article traces anthropological studies related to living rooms starting from the classical period at the end of thenineteenth century to the contemporary period. Studies about the living room are usually overshadowed by the large frame of studies about the house or space in general. In classical anthropological studies, the house is usually discussed more from the aspect of its vernacular traditions including daily life, kinship patterns, symbolic structures, beliefs and ritual practices that occur and are centered in the house. The house, including the living room, is assumed to be the final form, complete with walls and partitions, which is ready to be analyzed. Meanwhile, in contemporary studies, space and home are considered inseparable from the global forces, competition for space, planning, politics and funding that shape them. (Guest) space is also a collection of human experiences that are formed from various relationships and are influenced by human and non-human actors. Space in the contemporary tradition is also considered as an experience involving the human body, which has emotions and affection, which isactively capable of transforming the meaning of a space. This investigation also found that there are still not many studies regarding space (guests) in dense urban-village areas characterized by conflict and struggle for space in anthropological studies. The richness of this perspective can be used as capital in reviewing the complexity of a cultural phenomenon called the living room.

Abstract

This journal examines one of the Lamaholot traditions, the Bau Lolon rite. Lamaholot is a community and cultural group that inhabits the eastern part of the island of Flores and the three neighboring islands of Adonara, Solor and Lembata. Some villages on the islands of Pantar and Alor are also said to support Lamaholot culture. The Bau Lolon rite is a sacred tradition practiced by the indigenous people of Adonara, East Nusa Tenggara. This ritual symbolizes the unity and togetherness of the Adonara indigenous community, which involves the manifestation of God through the koda, known to the Adonara people as sabda. This ritual is a symbol of respect to the Supreme Being and ancestral spirits. The method used in this research is a comparative study based on books and articles related to the theme. The purpose of writing this article is to review the Bau Lolon rite as a means of manifestation of God known by the Adonara people as Rera Wulan, Tana Ekan. This sign of presence is then analyzed systemically through Thomas Aquinas' theological perspective on the five ways of discovering God's existence. As a result of the research, the concept of God in the Lamaholot "religion" and God in the Christian faith have distinctive differences and similarities from each entity as the Supreme Being.

Abstract

This study explains how people live their lives by activating their remaining potential to survive the crisis that suddenly comes due to natural disasters, and definitely changes their lives. This study develops understanding from the perspective of adaptation and strategies that are unique to humans as cultural creatures. However, this study develops deeper by revealing the cultural acceleration of humans using/activating their potential in overcoming the crisis conditions that surrounded them at that time. Therefore, this study site is placed in community life after a natural disaster in Lere Village, West Palu District, Palu City. This study uses a case study approach by highlighting the post-tsunami phenomenon which only took place 1 year after 28 September 2018, with the aim of capturing people's memories and intentions in living life as survivors, which is still relatively new and well recorded. The results of the study show that the crisis faced by the driving community is a natural disaster, however, the way the community understands and develops its actions is very diverse and polyphonic. However, the cultural acceleration that is developed relies heavily on social, cultural conditions and material availability. This means that even though people are required/pressured to experience sudden and urgent conditions, they will continue to develop accelerated actions based on the conditions and phenomena they are living at that time, as a form of negotiation and compromise regarding their lives.
