Abstract

This study aims to explore the learning medium of digital storytelling (DST) and its advantages and disadvantages as a way to facilitate the development of speaking skills among secondary students in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom. This research adopts a qualitative approach with case study design, using classroom observations and interviews to gather data from EFL students at a secondary school. The findings highlighted three main activities in the implementation of digital storytelling, which were opening, main, and closing activities. Another finding was digital storytelling's advantages and disadvantages. The advantages were that digital storytelling could foster students' creativity and students were motivated to learn speaking with digital storytelling. However, time consuming and technology distraction and dependency were the disadvantages. Although DS is a useful pedagogical tool for teaching EFL speaking, its successful application depends on careful planning, sufficient technology, and teacher preparation.

Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is fundamental to the development of English language proficiency, as it underpins the acquisition of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. In Indonesia, many junior high school students face challenges in expanding their vocabulary due to passive and repetitive learning methods. This study examined the effectiveness of the Board Race Game in improving vocabulary mastery, with a focus on nouns and adjectives. A quantitative approach with a pre-experimental design was used, involving 22 seventh-grade students from a junior high school. Data were gathered through a pre-test and post-test, each comprising 20 multiple-choice questions. The results showed a marked improvement in vocabulary scores, with the average increasing from 67.73 to 82.50. Statistical analysis using a paired sample t-test indicated a significant difference, and the effect size was calculated at 1.09, demonstrating a strong effect. These findings suggest that the Board Race Game is an effective tool for enhancing vocabulary learning.

Abstract

This study explores how pragmatic and discourse strategies in BBC News headlines shape public perceptions of economic crises. Using a qualitative method with Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), the research examines linguistic features in the BBC report “How Will the Global Economy Fare in 2025?”. The analysis focuses on pragmatic elements such as implicature, presupposition, and metaphor, alongside discursive framing and lexical choices. The findings indicate that BBC headlines construct narratives of uncertainty and risk through emotionally charged and speculative language. These strategies influence how readers interpret economic issues, often intensifying fear or urgency. Rather than presenting neutral information, headlines are powerful framing tools that guide public understanding of global economic developments. This study concludes that language in headlines is not merely descriptive but plays a crucial role in shaping public discourse, making critical awareness of media language increasingly important in times of crisis.
