Abstract

This study analyzes the strategy for developing students’ life skills through the implementation of the Ulama Cadre Proficiency Standard (SKKU) at Madrasah Aliyah Almaarif Singosari, Malang. The research focuses on how SKKU is designed, implemented, and evaluated within the framework of Islamic education to support the growth of students’ cognitive, personal, and social competencies. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, data were gathered through observation, in-depth interviews, questionnaires, and documentation. Findings reveal that SKKU curriculum development is grounded in national education policies such as Permendiknas and KMA 183, integrated with local institutional directives. Its implementation involves continuous teacher professional development, the provision of facilities for religious practices, and the use of motivational strategies to engage students. Evaluation is conducted progressively daily, monthly, semesterly, and annually addressing both academic performance and practical life skill acquisition. Key challenges identified include low student motivation, limited teacher capacity for consistent monitoring, and insufficient parental involvement. Despite these obstacles, the study concludes that the SKKU approach significantly contributes to the holistic development of students’ life skills. It emphasizes the importance of coordinated collaboration among educational institutions, families, and communities to maximize outcomes in character-based and life skill-oriented Islamic education.

Abstract

This study was driven by the limited scholarly attention given to grave pilgrimage as a medium of transcendental communication, despite its vital role in preserving spiritual and cultural life. Focusing on the Sasak community of Lombok, the research explored how transcendental communication is conceptualized and enacted through grave pilgrimage at three sacred sites: Loang Baloq, Ketak, and Pancor. The study examined the spiritual, cultural, and social motivations behind these practices, as well as the role of ritual expressions and the Sasak language in facilitating a deeper divine connection. Employing a qualitative ethnographic design, data were collected from 25 informants, including grave custodians, long-term pilgrims, and religious leaders selected through purposive and snowball sampling. Data collection methods included participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation, with thematic analysis conducted using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña model. Triangulation and member checking ensured validity. Findings revealed that grave pilgrimage among the Sasak serves as a wasilah (spiritual medium) through which individuals seek proximity to Allah by invoking the presence of pious ancestors. The use of the Sasak language in ritual acts such as dhikr, du’a, Qur’anic recitation, and Hizib Nahdlatul Wathan enhanced emotional and spiritual engagement. Motivations for pilgrimage included hajat (spiritual petitions), contemplation of mortality, and the intergenerational transmission of religious and cultural values. The study concludes that Sasak grave pilgrimage represents a syncretic practice that integrates Islamic teachings with local cultural heritage. It offers theoretical contributions to the field of religious communication and practical insights for cultural preservation, spiritual tourism, and interfaith dialogue.

Abstract

This study addresses the limited research on the leadership role of foundation chairmen in Islamic boarding school-based educational institutions, particularly concerning their impact on teacher performance. The primary objective is to examine the role of the foundation chairman of MA NWDI Montong Kubur Sakra in program planning, office facility management, and the subsequent effects on teacher performance. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach with an intrinsic case study design, the research involved 12 purposively selected participants, including the foundation chairman, the school principal, and ten teachers. Data were gathered through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation, and analyzed using the interactive model developed by Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña. The results demonstrate that the foundation chairman exercises collaborative, visionary, and transformational leadership. He actively contributes to annual work plan development, facilitates teacher workshops, mentors new educators, initiates reflective leadership forums, and ensures the systematic planning and maintenance of office facilities. This leadership approach has significantly enhanced teacher motivation, professionalism, discipline, and institutional involvement, thereby promoting a sustained culture of educational excellence. The study enriches the discourse on leadership within Islamic education and suggests the broader adoption of participatory leadership practices in similar institutional contexts.

Abstract

This study addresses the limited scholarly attention to intercultural communication and tolerance within intra-Islamic contexts, despite their crucial role in sustaining social harmony. While most existing literature focuses on interfaith dialogue, fewer studies examine how diverse Islamic groups, such as Salafi, Muhammadiyah, and Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) negotiate coexistence in shared religious spaces. Focusing on Al-Muttaqin Mosque, Cakra, Mataram, this research aims to (1) assess how intercultural communication contributes to harmony, (2) identify key factors shaping tolerance, and (3) analyze how tolerance fosters social cohesion. A qualitative descriptive design was employed, using purposive sampling of active congregants and mosque administrators. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, direct observation, and document review, and analyzed thematically to identify communication patterns. The findings reveal that intercultural communication bridges doctrinal differences through respectful dialogue, religious expressions, and non-verbal practices such as greetings, handshakes, and shared meals. Collaborative activities, including Qur’anic study circles, charity programs, and mosque renovations further reinforced cooperation beyond group boundaries. Tolerance was shaped by neutral leadership policies, historical experiences of coexistence, and cultural traditions such as gotong royong, which collectively fostered harmony by mitigating doctrinal tensions, strengthening trust, and cultivating shared ownership of mosque life. The study concludes that effective communication and tolerance mechanisms transform intra-faith diversity from a source of potential conflict into a foundation for unity. Theoretically, it extends intercultural communication frameworks into intra-Islamic settings, while practically offering guidance for mosque administrators and religious leaders to promote inclusivity through balanced programming and collaborative initiatives.

Abstract

This study addresses the limited research on the role of local wisdom as a medium of da‘wah, despite its substantial influence on religious and social cohesion in rural communities. Focusing on Bilebante Village, the research explores how practices such as gotong royong (communal cooperation), begibung (communal eating), sangkep (village deliberation), and socio-religious events function as dynamic channels for religious propagation, while also examining how social construction, leadership, and communication strategies enhance their effectiveness. A qualitative research design was employed, involving 20 purposively selected participants, including village leaders, religious figures, and youth volunteers. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, direct observation, and document analysis, and analyzed thematically. The findings indicate that local wisdom practices reinforce solidarity, embed Islamic values in everyday life, and foster participatory da‘wah. Social construction processes—externalization, objectification, internalization, and intergenerational transmission were found to sustain value transmission to younger generations. Local leaders emerged as key change agents, promoting both adoption and innovation, while contextual communication strategies utilizing local language, cultural symbols, and digital media enhanced engagement and effectiveness. The study concludes that culturally grounded da‘wah, supported by social construction and adaptive leadership, strengthens both religious teachings and community cohesion. Theoretically, the research extends the study of rural da‘wah strategies, while practically offering recommendations for religious leaders, educators, and policymakers to integrate cultural practices into religious outreach. Future research directions include comparative multi-village studies, longitudinal analysis of local wisdom adoption, and exploration of digital platforms in da‘wah dissemination.

Abstract

This study addresses the limited exploration of Islamic-based management practices in the agricultural sector, despite their importance for community welfare and sustainable livelihoods. The research aims to analyze how Islamic principles are applied in farmer group management, particularly in production, marketing strategies, leadership, and conflict resolution, and to examine their contribution to the economic and social welfare of members. This study used a qualitative descriptive approach with a multiple case study design in Senyiur and Pematung villages. Thirty purposively selected participants, including management, active, and ordinary members, were involved. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and document analysis, with triangulation to ensure credibility. Thematic analysis was applied to identify patterns of Islamic values in farmer group management. The findings reveal that Islamic-based farmer group management in Senyiur and Pematung improved members’ welfare through stable income, fair profit-sharing, collective risk management, and stronger spiritual-social bonds. Senyiur prioritized structured coordination, while Pematung emphasized solidarity and ethical distribution. Leadership rooted in moral accountability and participatory decision-making enhanced governance and marketing effectiveness. The integration of Islamic principles—amanah, ‘adl, shura, and ta’awun—not only improved group cohesion and reduced conflicts but also fostered barakah, motivating sustained participation and reinforcing community ties. The study concludes that Islamic-based management plays a crucial role in strengthening farmer organizations by linking ethical values with practical outcomes. Theoretically, it contributes to Islamic economics and group management studies. Practically, it offers insights for policymakers and farmer groups to develop Sharia-compliant models that enhance welfare, sustainability, and resilience.

Abstract

Higher education increasingly leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to foster higher-order cognitive skills; however, in Indonesia, students of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) often depend on rote memorization, limiting the growth of critical thinking and moral reasoning. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of a ChatGPT-based PAI learning model in enhancing students’ dual thinking abilities. A mixed-methods quasi-experimental design was implemented with 32 undergraduate students assigned equally to experimental and control groups; instruments comprised a critical thinking test, a moral reasoning test contextualized with Islamic dilemmas, and a transcript analysis guide, all expert-validated. Quantitative results showed notable post-test gains in the experimental group for critical thinking (M = 78.6, SD = 7.8) and moral reasoning (M = 76.8, SD = 7.9), while qualitative analysis indicated that 56.3% of students reached advanced critical thinking levels and 68.8% demonstrated advanced moral reasoning. The findings indicate that integrating ChatGPT enhances both cognitive and affective learning outcomes in PAI. The study concludes that a ChatGPT-based model is effective for strengthening critical thinking and moral reasoning, and contributes empirical evidence on generative AI in Islamic education; practically, it underscores ChatGPT’s utility as a dialogic partner when guided by lecturers. The implications include scaling to larger samples and longer interventions and exploring adaptive prompting strategies across diverse educational contexts.

Abstract

This study investigates the implementation of character education through Islamic Religious Education (Pendidikan Agama Islam, or PAI) in Indonesian schools, focusing on the development of students’ self-efficacy in internalizing moral values as prescribed by the Merdeka Curriculum, particularly in phases E and F. Employing an Interpretive Phenomenological Approach (IPA), the research involved 18 purposively selected students from three different school types in Bandung. Data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and focus group discussions. Analysis revealed four central themes: students’ internal struggles in cultivating moral self-control; the influence of social environments on collective efficacy; the emergence of moral agency within digital spaces; and the role of spiritual maturity in fostering authentic leadership. The findings demonstrate a developmental trajectory in students’ self-efficacy from initial efforts to resist negative behaviors (Phase E) to the embodiment of innovative, integrity-based leadership (Phase F). This study contributes to the theoretical expansion of self-efficacy by proposing the concept of “spiritual self-efficacy” and contextualizing Bandura’s four sources of efficacy within Islamic moral education. The results underscore that effective character education must move beyond mere transmission of moral knowledge to systematically fostering students’ confidence in consistently and authentically enacting moral behavior. These insights offer significant implications for advancing a more holistic and character-centered PAI curriculum and pedagogical strategy.
