Abstract

Character building is very important to become a key educational mainstream in Indonesia for formal, non-formal and informal setting. There are several factor that influence student character building, namely parenting style and genetic personality. The purpose of this research is to identify the influence of parenting style and genetic personality to student’s character building.. This research is a correlational study using survey and quantitative method. The population in this study were parents who have school-age children and their children have genetic personality test (STIFIn test) in Indonesia. Data collection was carried out by simple random sampling via electronic. The returned and valid questionnaire results were 625 samples. Data collection technique is using questionnaire with likert scale. The instrument of this study is a modification from Parenting Style Questionnaire (PSQ) Robinson et al. (1995) and Roman et al. (2015). To measure the genetic personality, the instrument is adapted from STIFIn Personality Concept (Poniman & Mangussara, 2013). Another instrument used to measure student character building is an adaptation from Poniman et. Al (2014). Analysis from this study is using SEM (Structural Equation Model) with SmartPLS version 3.0 as a statistic tools. The result of this study argued that parenting style and genetic personality have a positive influence and significantly contributed to student character building. This study also reinforces the theory that student character building is significantly affected by genetic personality and parenting style. Finally, it is recommended that parents should improve the quality of parenting and need to know their chlid’s genetic personality by personality test (e.g., STIFIn Test).

Abstract

The competence of vocational students in mastering electric motor installation was still low, because learning process has not involved student activities. One of the choices to activate students in learning was through project-based learning. Students were trained to be able to solve problems and make creative products. Project-based learning that applied in learning the Electric Motor Installation has not been able to increase students’ creativity in solving problems and make creative products. Therefore, research was carried to develop a project-based learning model into creative project-based learning. To support the implementation of the creative project-based learning model, teaching material is needed. The development of creative project-based learning use research and development method of 4D model of Thiagarajan with the stages of define, design, develop and disseminate. The research instruments were interview guides, observation sheets, questionnaires, skills assessment sheets, and test. Data analysis use percentage, gain score, and t-test. The research resulted a creative project-based learning model that was valid, practical and effective to improve student competence in Electric Motor Installation. The creative project-based learning model can increase students' creativity and competence in the form of mastery of teaching materials, skills in make the creative product and work attitudes.

Abstract

This study seeks to highlight key motivational influences for international faculty self-initiated expatriation (SIE) from developed to developing countries. We use the North African country of Morocco as a case illustration. While previous research has focused extensively on south-to-north migration, scant attention has been given to the migration of academic faculty from developed to developing regions despite the increasing level of activity in this area. Against this backdrop, this study provides fresh insights into the push and pulls factors—notably the motivations, expectations, and experiences of faculty who have embarked upon this type of mobility and drawing upon the theoretical lens of SIE. The study revealed that non-economic factors, namely ‘gaining international experience’, ‘raising academic status’ and ‘greater employment opportunities’ are the most important pull factors to migrate while ‘lack of career opportunities’, ‘unsatisfied job’ and ‘underemployment’ are the push factors that influence faculty self-initiated expatriation to Morocco. Our study showed 53.1% overall job satisfaction among expatriates while literature reported unsatisfactory career development and work conditions among local university teachers. Findings attested that expatriate women, in the large majority (89.3%), were unsatisfied with their current job while, on the contrary, men are globally contented (68%). Active local professional network seems to have a significant correlation with expatriate men’s job satisfaction.

Abstract

This study determined and analyzed the extent of readiness in the implementation of the kindergarten curriculum and the challenges encountered by teachers in public elementary schools in the Division of Cebu City, Philippines. It employed the mixed method using quantitative – qualitative technique. The study was conducted in DepEd’s Cebu City Division, with Kindergarten teachers and school heads that served as research-respondents who answered the adapted instrument on contextualizing Kindergarten curriculum. The gathered data were treated using descriptive and inferential statistics supported by thematic analysis. The study revealed that teachers are always ready on the implementation of the Kindergarten curriculum. Further, the study finds that there is a significant relationship between age, educational qualification, and years of teaching experience of teachers in the use of available materials. Furthermore, there is a significant difference on the school environment when grouped by its clustered district. The study concluded that the implementation of the contextualized Kindergarten curriculum based on availability of instructional materials, forms of learning, evaluation method of learners, and school environment were always made available for teachers to use. After the school heads’ answers were transcribed, coded, categorized and analyzed, there were three themes that came out namely: preparation time, development of instructional materials, and the need for teacher training. The implementation of the Kindergarten curriculum has received different feedback from teachers.  Their expressed challenges are categorized into: Language Difficulties, Preparation Time, and Instructional Materials Development.

Abstract

Many developing countries face the challenges of low tax compliance behavior due to the self-assessment system. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to obtain empirical evidence about the implication of early tax education toward the changes in future taxpayers’ compliance behavior. Previous research found that early tax education can develop the compliance paradigm in human behavior. This study employed a quantitative research method with a case study approach. Data was gathered through a survey of 719 students of junior and senior high school in Jakarta, Indonesia as respondents, and divided into two groups: those who receive tax learning at school and those who did not. The results revealed that early tax education positively affects taxpayers’ compliance behavior, especially for those who had received tax learning. This study reports preliminary findings in tax education and fills the gap of research in this area. The research contributes to learning and behavior studies and sheds light on implementing early tax education to resolve non-compliance tax behavior.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate students' understanding of the nature of science (NOS) in project-based learning combined with mind mapping (PjBL-MM), students' NOS understanding across gender, and PjBL-MM and gender interaction's effect on students' NOS understanding of conservation education. It employed a pretest-post-test non-equivalent group design. The research population consisted of first-year students at the Biology Department, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Negeri Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia. Thus, the study consisted of 98 students (40 males and 58 females) selected randomly from three different classes. The students' NOS understanding was assessed using the views of NOS type B questionnaire. The learning models' effectiveness was tested using ANCOVA. The results showed a significant difference in students' NOS understanding, PjBL-MM group reported the highest NOS score among all treatment groups in the Conservation education course. There is a significant difference NOS understanding between male and female students. Females outperformed males in NOS understanding. However, PjBL-MM and gender interaction did not affect students' NOS understanding. This study is expected to encourage the implementation of PjBL-MM to improve the students' NOS understanding. The educators are also expected to empower NOS understanding through students' active participation in science by implementing project-based learning combined with mind mapping techniques.
