Abstract

Pesantren or Islamic boarding school plays a vital and strategic role in improving environmentally sound education. Eco-pesantren is a movement that puts a high concern for the environment. This study aimed to analyze eco-pesantren modeling techniques in education. It is a case study with a qualitative research method. The research was conducted at Islamic Boarding School Sumber Mental Agama Allah (SPMAA), Turi Lamongan, East Java, Indonesia. Data were collected by observation, interviews, questionnaires, and document studies. This research concluded that modeling techniques can at least be pursued in four main ways: the individual role model of pesantren leaders; infrastructure and their use; governance systems; and culture or traditions. Besides, using integrated modeling techniques at both school and pesantren culture can increase insight and application of environmentally friendly behavior through a direct observation and habituation of healthy educational practices. Modeling can help students turn abstract ideas of green life into actual implementations. Direct observation of continuous practices equips students with the knowledge required to perform expected behaviors. Research on modeling assists eco-pesantren institutions encourage learning and practices about healthy environment. In the global context, it can be a role model for the implementation of environmentally friendly education that promotes environmentally sound learning.

Abstract

The intention of this study was to examine how a flipped classroom with a collaborative learning approach improved the writing skills of Indonesian higher education students. To achieve the study’s aim of 48 Indonesian higher education participants, the Oxford Quick Placement Test (OQPT) was employed. They were divided into two groups: experiment and control. Following that, as a pre-test, both groups were given a written exam. The experimental class (EC) was then positioned in a flipped classroom. Students were permitted to bring smartphones to class and utilize them while learning, and the flipped classroom was equipped with an internet connection, a laptop, and a projector. The control class (CC) got standard classroom instruction. This strategy was employed until the very last session. The experimental group outperformed the control group on the post-test, according to the results of the independent samples t-test and one-way analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). Furthermore, the results revealed a significant difference in post-test performance between the EC and CC.

Abstract

The quality of teaching and pedagogical practices of teachers is a global issue in education. The success of Six Sigma in several industries stimulates its potential to be applied in the field of education. However, discussions related to Six Sigma development in systematic education are still very limited. Therefore, this systematic literature study was conducted to synthesize empirical data on the implementation of the Six Sigma approach in education. This study focuses on two main objectives, namely, to identify the trends in the implementation of the Six Sigma approach in education based on national and year tendencies as well as to identify research sampling trends and the focus of the field of study. The Web of Science and Scopus databases have been used based on the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA). The findings of systematic literature articles showed that India is the most dominant country conducting Six Sigma studies in education. Furthermore, related studies were conducted the most in 2017. In addition, the research samples are also more focused on the context of higher education institutions. These findings help improve the general understanding of Six Sigma in education to improve the quality of teachers in schools further.

Abstract

The readability tools allow us to measure the readability of a text. The previous studies have elaborated the use of readability tools to analyze reading materials, but it is relatively sparse regarding the teaching of readability tools especially involving the second language teaching education (SLTE) program as a context. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the acceptance of pre-service English as a foreign language (EFL) teacher upon readability text tools. It covers their acceptance towards the tools, the extent to how the pre-service teachers accept the Web-FX and Readability Analyzer as readability tools and seeks for participants’ concerns using the tools. The study was conducted at one English Language Education Study Program at in East Java, Indonesia, involving 33 third-year undergraduate students taking pre-teaching program. Having incorporated a qualitative data analysis approach on the students’ text analysis reports and interviews, the study revealed that the participants have positive acceptance of the tools for several reasons. Some final concerns from pre-service teachers after readability tools teachings are presented, including suggestions for future research related to readability tools.
