Abstract

Work environments play a key role in teachers’ professional development. However, instruments assessing teachers’ work context are still lacking. The principal objective of the present study was to validate a Work Environments Inventory for Teachers (WEIT) constructed based on the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model. Two studies were conducted involving two independent samples totaling 696 (232 for Study 1 and 464 for Study 2) school teachers in Mainland China. Both exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were employed to cross-validate the WEIT. The eternal construct validity of the WEIT was checked through investigating its connection with the Thinking Styles in Teaching Inventory. Findings indicated the WEIT is an adequate measure to map the characteristics of work environments for school teachers. Limitations of the present research and implications for future studies are discussed.

Abstract

This case study analyzed students' sociomathematical norms for the formation of study groups conducted by teachers, the role of sociomathematical norms on students' social interactions when learning mathematics, gender differences that can affect students' sociomathematical norms, and sociomathematical norms on derived material in terms of gender aspects among students. The nine subjects of this study were selected purposively. Data collection techniques were observation, interviews, and documentation. The study concluded that among the four indicators of sociomathematical norms, three indicators of male students are superior to female students. Male students are superior in accepting explanations from teachers, accepting differences of opinion, and mathematical insight. Meanwhile, female student excels in only one indicator (the effectiveness of mathematics).

Abstract

Learners can experience science in the real world by interacting with materials, collaborating with peers, and engaging in a problem-solving process. Notwithstanding, secondary school learners’ problem-solving skills (PSS) can be developed by using an instructional strategy that actively involves them in the learning process instead of sorely focusing on content learned. This paper shows how the production of materials for teaching and learning can go hand-in-hand with the development of learners’ PSS through the implementation of a Hands-on Instructional Model (HIM) in chemistry lessons. This study was a Design-based Research using a convergent mixed-method approach. The data was collected using lesson observation protocol, focus group discussions guide, and problem-solving test. On the aspect of the development of PSS, learners were enhanced with the skills to solve an ordinary chemistry problem and the criteria of observation were on the ways learners identify a problem, the approach used to solve the problem, and whether they could reflect on the answer they obtained. The findings indicate a substantial impact of HIM on learners’ PSS. Therefore, it is suggested that HIM should be used frequently to enhance learners’ active engagement in chemistry lessons and for further development of their PSS.

Abstract

In this research, approaches to making e-learning accessible to students with impairments were studied based on the authors’ experience at Jordan’s Al-Zaytoonah University. The educational, organizational, and instructional concerns are underlined when analyzing the university’s experience in giving access to online content. Furthermore, these difficulties must be addressed in order to create the necessary organizational change to effectively solve accessibility concerns. This study looked into the e-learning issues that 56 university students with disabilities had reported. Students reported issues with: accessibility to websites and learning course management systems; accessibility to digital audio and video; time management in completing online tasks; trouble handling data during lectures; and a lack of appropriate adaptive strategies in online questionnaires. Students also noted technical issues with using e-learning, instructors’ communication with e-learning, and their treatment of all students equally, overlooking the necessity of considering the needs of students with impairments. In this study, we present the problems raised by students with disabilities and how the e-learning affects students’ outcomes in the e-learning experience. We also make recommendations based on the students’ realistic special-needs experience at Al-Zaytoonah University in Jordan during the COVID-19 pandemic to inspire decision-makers in educational institutions and those interested in this field.

Abstract

Research activity is one of the requirements for medical students in order to finish their study. Therefore, it needs to examine the knowledge and perceptions of medical students about medical research. The research design was an experimental one-group pretest-posttest design, involving 86 medical students, with the statistical tests using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test. After the module implementation, the students’ knowledge about research had improved in the concept of theoretical basis, the concept of research methodology, and the biostatistics methods. However, there was no improvement in bioethical knowledge. Close relations between the result of pre- and post-research modules implementation were shown in the knowledge about theoretical basis, about research methodology, and the perception of workloads in college have (p<α). There were significant changes in knowledge (Z=-2.867, p=0.004) and perceptions (Z=-1.964, p=0.050) of the medical students pre- and post-research module. Giving research modules early, along with social and academic support for medical students, would improve their knowledge and positive perceptions towards research.

Abstract

The various cultures that have entered Indonesia country make national identity and character must be strengthened by involving local wisdom in the learning activity. This study provided the bibliometric and bibliographic review of many qualified literatures about local wisdom-based learning. A bibliometric analysis was employed to conduct this study supported by some software such as VOSviewer and Publish or Perish (PoP). There were 173 documents from Scopus database published in 2012–2021 involved in this study. Results revealed that publication trends on local wisdom-based learning increased slightly from 2012 to 2020, while the development of number of citations tended to be fluctuated in the period of 2012–2021. In addition, the influential papers about local wisdom-based learning were published by most of Indonesian researchers. The trending research on local wisdom-based learning was the development of local wisdom-based teaching materials in science or physics learning to educate Indonesian elementary students’ character in which ethno-medicine-based science learning was the newly trending research. This study provides information for researchers in history education that studies related to the development of local wisdom-based historical teaching materials and the use of these teaching materials in the implementation of history learning seem like not much have been conducted in which it is expected to reinforce students’ national identity and character.

Abstract

This study examined the factor structure of the Organizational Health Inventory (OHI) scale among Omani teachers. There were four factors assumed to represent the OHI (principal influence, academic emphasis, morale, and initiating integrity). Testing the scale reliability was another aim of this study. A random sample (n=458) of Omani teachers was considered. The short version of the scale has 30 items. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis was performed on the sample data. The model is good fitted to the data. Across gender, the invariance of the structure was tested, and the parameters of the model were invariant. Consequently, the two genders were compared via multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) with gender as an independent variable and subscales. The female teachers were found to more likely show principal influence, academic emphasis, and morale than the male teachers, who instead, were more efficacious than the female teachers in dealing with institutional integrity.

Abstract

In the recent digital era, the use of the internet worldwide has become vital in almost all fields of life, and no one can deny its significant impact on activities of different age groups. The current study investigated the effect of internet usage on students with/without learning difficulties in Jordanian primary schools from point of view of their parents. For this purpose, a questionnaire consisting of 21 items was built by the researchers including these areas: social interactions, communication, health, entertainment, learning, academic activities, behavior, and security. The targeted population was the parents of students with/without learning difficulties in public and private schools. The findings indicated that parents perceive a moderate level of effect of internet usage on their children’s most activities except entertainment and security which have a high impact. Moreover, parents of students with learning difficulties perceive a positive impact of the internet in enhancing their children’s learning abilities.

Abstract

This project was conducted to investigate whether the use of pictures able to improve pupils’ vocabulary retention. There were 36 pupils from an urban school located in Malaysia who are in year 4 involved as participants. The pupils were of average proficiency level of the English Language. A pre-test and post-test were conducted in order to identify the effectiveness of the intervention. An interview was carried out with 10 pupils in the post intervention for triangulation purpose. The scores from the pre-test and post-test were compared to measure the effectiveness of the intervention. Whereas, the analysis of the interview was procured on pupils’ perception towards the intervention. The findings indicate that pupils are able to remember the vocabularies taught for a longer period of time when the words are associated with pictures. Findings also indicate the use of the pictures in improving their vocabulary retention.

Abstract

Student-centered learning (SCL) is one of the teaching methods commonly used nowadays as it encourages the active participation and engagement of students in the classroom, especially for the engineering theoretical subject. This study is aimed to examine the factors of students’ involvement and participation towards the SCL Teaching Method in terms of the activities, benefits, problems, and limitations of student involvement. The quantitative data are obtained from the responses of students that enroll in an engineering theoretical subject in the Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Pahang Civil Engineering Diploma Program. These questionnaires were being classified into five major factors that are the formation of group studies for SCL activities, activities conducted for SCL teaching method, benefits that they gain from SCL method, problems that they encounter during SCL, and suggestions for student improvement towards the activity SCL session. The collected data were analyzed quantitatively by using the percentage and mean method in SPSS computer software. The Relative Importance Index (RII) system was used to quantify the relative importance of involvement factors. This study revealed three main factors affecting the participation and engagement of students in the classroom. This study has an important contribution to help academicians to improve and enhance their teaching method to achieve the objective of the SCL method in the future.
