Work Integrated Learning (WIL) is a crucial activity for students enrolled in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programs in South Africa and globally. Effective management of this activity is essential to ensure that students are well-prepared for their placement in the workplace. Unfortunately, the current situation in South African TVET colleges often falls short, with students frequently finding themselves in workplaces where they lack the necessary readiness. To address this issue, a mixed-method approach was employed to select 50 Level 4 students from the National Certificate Vocational program and four Work Integrated Learning (WIL) coordinators. The objective was to identify the challenges faced by students during their WIL experience. Data was collected through questionnaires administered to the students and face-to-face interviews conducted with the WIL coordinators. The findings of the study revealed that 68% of the students were not adequately informed about workplace dynamics, which posed a significant challenge. Additionally, 82% of the respondents stated that they were never briefed on the employer's expectations upon their arrival at the workplace. While students found the activities in the workplace interesting, they observed a noticeable gap between what they learned in college and the realities of the industry. These challenges clearly indicate a lack of proper WIL management in the TVET colleges. To address these issues, it is recommended that the college curriculum planner collaborates closely with industries to align the curriculum with industry expectations and requirements. This synergy will enhance students' WIL experience and better prepare them for the workplace.

Fruit flies are plant-disturbing insects that harm farmers both qualitatively and quantitatively. Initial symptoms of damage to host plants are marked by the appearance of black spots until the plant parts rot and fall. Fruit flies will inject their eggs until they hatch and become larvae, then the larvae will gnaw the fruit flesh from the inside. Control of fruit flies so far still uses factory chemical insecticides that are not environmentally friendly and leave residues that threaten health. Controlling fruit flies that are environmentally friendly and not at risk of leaving residue can use attractants made from natural ingredients. This study was aimed to determine the effectiveness of the use of natural-based attractants that utilize local raw materials on the allure of fruit fly insects. The materials used in this study were clove leaves, lemongrass leaves, guava leaves, pandan leaves, lime leaves, pineapple and star fruit. The tools used to trap insects use two tools, namely trap bottles and glue. The results showed that the use of lemongrass leaves, clove leaves, guava leaves and pineapple fruit was quite effective in trapping fruit fly pests. Lemongrass leaves more effective than others (27 results in a week). A more effective tool to use is fly glue. The most effective combination is glue with clove leaves, guava leaves, and pineapple (number of results is >100 in a week).

The integration of information and communications technology in teaching and learning is growing at an exponential rate due to many factors we have observed lately, such as the outbreak of COVID-19. The unprecedented outbreak of COVID-19 took the world by surprise. Many sectors such as health and education were left shattered due to the outbreak of COVID-19. The outbreak compelled the educational sector to come up with alternative majors to keep the teaching and learning process alive as the physical classes were suspended as means to curb the spread of COVID-19. In an attempt to investigate different ways Engineering Graphics and Design teachers used to conduct lessons during the COVID-19 lockdown, this study employed a qualitative approach. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews and analysed using thematic analysis. The findings of this study indicate that COVID-19 did influence the way teachers are teaching post-COVID-19. The study findings further reveal that WhatsApp was the tool most teachers relied on to keep teaching and learning alive, however, some teachers were experiencing problems. The study recommends that teachers should continue using WhatsApp as a way of extending lessons during home hours.

Biofuels like biodiesel and bioethanol are the latest technologies to meet the rising energy demand and to replace depleting petroleum supplies. Biodiesel, which is made from vegetable oils, can be used to replace diesel fuel. Vegetable oils are a sustainable energy resource with a similar energy content to diesel fuel. In the proposed process, the main product from the reaction is biodiesel, whereas the by-products consist of glycerol and fertilizer. Biodiesel is mainly used in automotive diesel engines for various reasons, such as having a greater oxygen content, a higher cetane number, a higher viscosity, a lower aromatic content, and very little sulfur. These properties are essential in engine performance, combustion, and emissions. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of recent literature on biodiesel production methods from waste cooking oil, where the methods are grouped systematically and assessed. A decision table on process selection is provided to screen the most suitable technology for biodiesel production from waste cooking oil. The properties and application of potential products and by-products are also discussed. Finally, the case study of supplying biodiesel for B5 fuel in Brunei Darussalam is also provided.

Natural organic matter (NOM) seriously challenges the drinking water supply. It typically exists as complex organic substances generated in the natural water ecosystem as part of hydrologic, biological, and geological cycles. The significant variation, composition, and abundance of NOM in natural water or wastewater necessitate the implementation of robust and adaptive technologies, particularly in addressing even more stringent standards of drinking water supply or treated water discharge. Coagulation is one of the most common processes for water and wastewater treatments. It is highly desirable to treat feed containing NOM because it prevents the disinfection of by-products formation. Therefore, current dynamics of NOM in terms of varying compositions and concentrations demand improvement in handling the coagulation process through optimization of operational parameters (dosing and the control of pH), application of novel and more effective coagulants, and as a combination with other processes through process intensification. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of recent literature on developments of coagulation for NOM removal. The coagulants are grouped systematically and assessed. Next, enhanced coagulation via process intensification with other processes (membrane filtration, oxidation, adsorption, and ion exchange) is discussed. Lastly, the future outlook on research direction on sustainable coagulation process is listed to support circular and bioeconomy.

Poor performance in Assembly Drawing (AD) has been a significant issue in Engineering Graphics and Design (EGD) in high schools and TVET colleges. This poor performance in AD, which is a crucial component of the EGD exam, leads to students not performing well in Grade 12 and consequently limits their entry into engineering programs in TVET colleges. Consequently, this study aims to investigate the contributing factors to poor performance in the teaching and learning of AD among N3 students. To achieve the objectives of this study, a mixed research approach was employed, and data was collected through semi-structured interviews and the Purdue Spatial Visualization Test (PSVT). A purposive sampling method was used to select four Engineering Drawing (ED) lecturers and 45 N3 Engineering Drawing students to participate in this study. Furthermore, Piaget's perception and imagery theory and Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) were utilized as frameworks underpinning this study. The interview results were analyzed using thematic analysis, while the data from the PSVT was analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The findings of this study indicate that N3 students have very low spatial visualization skills, and the negative attitude displayed by both students and lecturers towards the teaching and learning of AD contributes to poor performance in N3 ED. The findings further revealed that the lack of drawing-related teaching qualifications among lecturers also contributes to poor performance in AD. Furthermore, the quantitative findings show that the students achieved a mean score of 16.82, with a standard deviation of 8.389, indicating poor performance on the PSVT test. One limitation of this study is the small number of lecturers interviewed (four), which makes it difficult to generalize the results. Therefore, future studies should include a larger sample size of lecturers. This study recommends that lecturers be hired based on their relevant teaching qualifications and further suggests the use of technology to enhance students' spatial visualization skills and improve their performance in AD.
